John Allen’s #9 Never Die - Beyond That Fire
For the artistic layout builder and the world's most famous John Allen, the first model locomotive he acquired was an HO dockside tank engine produced by Varney. This encounter took place in 1946. From that small locomotive, he envisioned the first iteration of the Gorre and Daphetid Railroad layout, which evolved into the legendary large layout he built over a lifetime. Shortly after his sudden passing in January 1973, his beautiful layout and rolling stock were tragically consumed by a fire. However, over 40 years later, some charred remnants were fortuitously discovered. The National Model Railroad Association, upon acquiring these artifacts, commissioned me to restore the exteriors of three locomotives. After careful examination, I determined that all three could be restored to operational condition. And so, it was successful. Today, #8 and #10 are on public display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. #9, John Allen's first locomotive, was a special honor. It was gifted to me by the NMRA Board of Directors as a reward for my restoration efforts. It, too, has been restored and, as you can see, runs vigorously on my layout. The physical locomotive that Allen purchased back then, aside from the motor and most of the parts he added, is still very much alive. The greatest miracle was the discovery of the lead Fire Man figure, preserved inside the locomotive. He, too, continues to serve today. In this video, I invite you to see his presence through the window. This G&D Railroad #9 is truly a miraculous model locomotive. It survived the fire, reemerged after being missing for over 40 years, and was revived to operational status. Personally, it's the small locomotive that took the leading role in a single photo of Allen, coincidentally, when I was just 10 years old, inspiring me to become a layout builder. Today, it resides on my layout.

Far better than sitting on any museums glass shelf; this little engine is sporting it's tragic life in that burned paint but this little steam engine was owned and operated on the most famous model railroad ever built and she is an icon and a working display of model railroading royalty.
To see #9 running again and doing what it was designed to do must make John and any of us who know of his work, all smile just the way I am smiling now, while watching this little video. The engine driver is the original driver that was found down inside the interior by Kenichi.
I would be so proud to have this little, magical, mechanical, treasure, visit the Great Divide Line one day. I would have to make it an open house event and attempt to see if any other original cars or engines might want to come and join in to celebrate this hobby's favorite model railroader.

I remember reading about the Gorre and Daphetid in Model Railroader when I was a kid. A shame what happened, but you did a great job bringing this piece of model railroad history back!

I was 10 years old when I first saw the layout pictures by John Allen. After that, " Building such beautiful layout" has been my main opportunity in the life. He has been the great teacher for me in the model railroading. Thank you for watching!

Kenichi, you've done a wonderful job restoring this old locomotive! 👍😁
I saw the article on the restoration in the February 2020 Model Railroader, and I was blown away.
I hope to own two of these locomotives someday for my layout.

This is wonderful. Good old Gordon Varney, and the other 1940s and 50s manufacturers, who built 'em tough, reliable and enduring. I have several veteran Varney engines, including one of these switchers and other models of the era in my fleet, which are still active. And great to see some of John's fleet that are still active too.

Fun to see that is has the Central Valley valve gear kit. I'm restoring a Varney dockside as a replica of John Allens No 9 which is how I found this great video.

That HO scale dockside locomotive was a well built piece on machinery that withstood that fire, It was made at a time when we took pride in our workmanship, None of this modern 'MADE IN CHINA' crap that falls apart within month. Also, how did that fire start? was it faulty wiring? vandalism? or some jealous "friend"?
