Yep we all had that issue but like he said go back to the gear u were in or go down one, remember to relax off the clutch it confuses us all at times especially going down a gear
Outstanding video. As an instructor myself I can appreciate your teaching techniques. Your explanations are very easy to understand and love how you show technique and finesse are how to shift, not brute force. Fingertip pressure on the shifter to feel the gears, light throttle and listening to the transmission to find your gear. Good job sir.
+Apex CDL Institute, I just went through CDL training a couple months ago, and this video really helped me understand the gear matching techniques. My instructors had their own way of explaining, but this video was a huge help! Thank you Al Roberts for making a great instructional video!
This is absolute Gold. My instructor didn't teach me these techniques and sadly I failed my HR truck test because I lost my gears on a slight downward slope and just couldn't find a gear. I just crunched all over the place till I finally pulled over at a very slow pace, found 3rd and then continued on but by this time the assessor deemed me as incompetent because I wasn't in control of the vehicle. If I had seen this video 1 day before I would have known what to do. Many thanks for an awesome video.
Thank you for making this video. I have TWO very experienced truckers teaching me to drive a 10-gear truck and neither of them showed me anything about recovering from a missed gear. I will definitely share your video with other cdl students!!!
I’m just learning in my Mack 2006 8-LL-L. This was a perfect video examples of the same situations I have had which resulted in pulling onto the shoulder to start over at 1st gear. I’ve been having some success at recover and down shifting! Thanks for making this video!!!
Yeah i think its one thing you can only learn by feel an practice, watching wont help if ur a beginner but for us that have experienced this will make more sense i guess. Each truck has there own idiosyncrasies
Excellent video, gear recovery should be taught in driving school, I’m not sure if it’s taught where you are, but this is something I had to work out myself after I got my licence. I freaked out when I was a rookie and lost my gears going up a steep hill, fully loaded, I had to come to a complete stop and start over, it’s a crucial skill to know how to recover gears, it’s something I show every beginner now.
after seeing just a couple of minutes of your video i noticed two things i have done wrong, i don't always drive a manual since they have me bouncing between automatic and stick when i do drive so i don't get as use to it, but yeah the clutch pedal depth and the down shifting timing. thank you very much, alot better instructor than i have had, half of it i have had to do it myself so this really puts in a understanding and helps.
I have gone back to driving a truck after 15 years and was having trouble with down changes mainly. Even did the old panick halfway up a hill and couldn't find a gear so I literally stooped and started again. Well I watched your video last night then went to work today and I only lost gears once all day on a 8 our shift plus I felt less frustrated all day. Thanks for your instruction as it would have to be the best I have watched as most of the others only show how to up shift with only 1 or 2 down changes. your instruction has showed me how to not pannick and just deal with the situation. Thanks keep up the great work and like someone else said maybe you should be an instructor.
Great instructional video, so simple when you know what you're doing! Once you get it right you don't even need the clutch most of the time. The repetition really teaches what to do thanks Al
This is a great video. I'm in driving school right now and our teacher never explained there's a brake in the clutch when fully depressed. They tell us not to push the clutch all the way in but it's still good to know why. Helps to remember when you're trying to break traditional car clutch drivng habits.
Well, there's a clutch brake, but its not for shifting while driving; it's simply to stop the transmission from spinning so that you can get these shit transmissions into gear when stopped.
Great video finally some one that actually taught me, can finally say I now know what to do and not to panic in situations where I might have shifted to quick and couldn’t catch the gear or down gearing thanks to you i now know how to drive a road ranger
Phenomenal sir,,,18 years driving I have drove almost everything out there, I started my 1st driving on an old 47 Stirling with a 5&3, hauling out of Dixson and Davis Sacramento Ca. to Oakland with a set of doubles,, then to a Freightliner with a 4by4 I loved that truck until you nod off on those long, dot the log, desert trips, and forgetting where you are and having to stop and start over, It's much better with a 10 speed and up. Thank You for your vid.
this video should be shown to a lot of new drivers. When I first got in a truck recovering a missed shift was one of the hardest things for me to learn. But it happened a lot driving in different situations. Good video.
I'm cdl trucking automatic buses now for abt ten years. I'm starting a job tomorrow cdl standard ten speed tanker. i can drive auto mesh stick just fine. your video is the best informative real world scenario video that has helped me understand the difference with manual mesh stick. thanks
Awesome and informative information about recovering gears! I am grateful and appreciative for your assistance with this process of recovering from lost gears!
Thank you very much for this very good video! I am in driving school and having a very hard time with shifting and my instructor just tells me i screw up but never tells me how to recover from losing gears ! your video helped me alot! thanks!
ok, but let these kids know, This is Just for recovering. Tickling the gears and also doing this all the time hours on end will wear out the gear sprockets tips and can also cause chipping. Also these kids need to know, that if you change gears going down hill, you wont recover and you can lose control killing everyone thats down hill. and many times going down hill trying to recover forcing the transmission & picking up speed , you will find your transmission all over the road behind you. Never ever Shift while going down hill. - If the speed limit says 30-mph going down hill, I do 15-mph. I always Half the amount posted going downhill while having J-Brake on. Other peoples lives matter first before anything else in the world.
It's a no no if the driver doesn't know what they're doing or doesn't have enough experience. I regularly downshift on long down hill grades. Just have to bring the rpms down lower than normal and grab the next lower gear.
if i miss a gear going down hill an the trucks starts to gain momentum, i just push the service break in an count to 4 to wash off rpms then restart selecting my gear change, much easyier
