I was there down the left field line next to the bullpen, with my boy, my dad, my brother's and several of their boys. My dad hadn't been in a big quake in a while and couldn't understand what was going on. He lived in LA for about 30 years but hadn't spent much time in Southern California for the previous 30 and was just so confused looking. I pointed out the foul pole swinging back and forth and it finally computed. Was pretty funny. There was no reaction that we noticed except when the pitcher finally realized what was going on and held the ball for a few seconds too long, the crowd started to get real loud as the quake had ended and it was time to continue. I was trying to remember the exact date of this (last time I went to a Dodgers game) and found the video.
People in California have a weird ability to tune out a lot of earthquakes, unless there’s serious damage. The quake must have started pretty far away because 7.1 can be extremely dangerous if you’re near the fault line.
@@stulog - Good to know. I guess I missed it, ended up moving to Palm Springs from SF the next year, I probably would have remembered it if I was in SoCal. I live in Ridgecrest, the epicenter of this earthquake. Its amazing to me seeing the shockwaves travel that far. I knew the shaking was felt a hundred miles away, but its amazing to actually see it. I am curious about the amount of time it took the shock waves to travel that far. I know while watching the live reports from Caltech, there was about a 10 second lapse between a measurable aftershock here and Caltech’s instruments recording it in Pasadena. I am just grateful the 7.1 happened here in the desert and not in Los Angeles. We got through it unscathed. I can’t imagine the amount of damage LA would have experienced.
My daughter and her family were in Vegas at the time and it shook things up pretty good there too. Not the P waves so much but the S waves had everything swinging back & forth inside the casino.
I'm a lifelong Massachusetts resident, visited San Diego in April of 2010 just in time for the Easter day quake near Mexicali. The biggest quake I ever felt prior to that in MA equaled a big loud truck driving by. Here the ground rolled, the leaves on the trees vibrated for 30 to 40 seconds. It was long enough that I had time to start to wonder if it would ever stop. Thanks Cali, for a feeling I'll never forget. Best part was how literally nobody from the area was the slightest bit impressed with it, even if it was bigger than the usual tremor.
That earthquake is to this day the only one I remember and I’ve lived there my whole life. It was definitely one of the biggest if not the biggest earthquake we had in a long time

It was not enjoyable in the moment but I look back at it now and get a good laugh about it.

It was the talk of the state for a good two weeks. Just an example of societal differences based on geography. Like when Texas gets an inch of snow, and shuts down for 3 days. No plows, no salt, no experience. Then you go to Buffalo and they can get 3 feet and be back on track for dinner.
