One of the last things Johnny Ramone did was oversee the making of this album. He advised all the bands to make the songs their own rather than play them like Ramones songs, so that's what everyone did. Naturally, the cover by Greenday sounds the closest to the original, as their style is arguably already closer to the Ramones than anyone else's on the album. But interestingly, Johnny's favorite track was actually the Red Hot Chili Peppers' version of Havana Affair, which sounds nothing like the original stylistically. I personally really like a lot of the tracks, it's interesting to hear Ramones songs translated to other band's styles, as it shows how versatile their music really was. The problem is, if you already dislike a band's style or dislike it when a song you like gets messed with, you aren't going to enjoy the cover. But honestly, getting all these different artists to play the songs the way the Ramones played them would have been silly. That's what tribute bands are for.
So much hostility here. The Ramones opened up for U2 in stadiums in the early 90s. U2 genuinely like the Ramones (as opposed to many poseurs wearing Ramones t.shirts and don't even know they once were a band). They just covered a song they like by a band they like and respect.
U2 weren’t even good enough when they started out to play cover of them. If your band can’t play something as simple and straightforward as the Ramones, then you should quit. Full fuckin’ stop.
U2 started by doing covers of The Ramones when they were kids. By their own admission the reason why they started writing their own stuff and the reason why their albums don't contain covers is because they weren't good at covers. There's a story they tell about when they appeared on TV for the first time in Ireland before they were signed. The producer came to visit them and they played a Ramones cover saying it was their own, he was impressed and when they played the show they switched it for one of their own.
I will away remember the musicians behind the music. Such Icon band. Too bad they are all gone, such talented musicians. I think one of the original band members are still around.
I think U2 doesn't liked to do this cover song, most of Elevation Tour Bono did "I Remember You", but i liked both cover songs, it's ok too if someone didn't liked both cover songs :) :D, "The Miracle" is a Amazing song by U2, love it too
No, @jaginjersey is right on this one. Old Boner singing this like someones 85 yr old Uncle. Outta touch with anything Rock n Roll. Some of the most if not The Most horrible sh*t I've ever heard.
I know u2 thinking their God n all, but this is really weak. bono always singing about love and sick sappy crap. Besides bono being a complete moron, he's about as tough as Miley Cyrus covering this song. Can't even listen to this, complete garbage.
You have no idea how this great song kicks in after a powerful Chinese Rock and then to close up with a tremendous song called We're a Happy Family all played back to back on live shows! The energy was insane, mostly in 79-80' era.
I read through these comments while the video was loading and became somewhat hesitant of what was to come... I feared it might be horrendous judging by other's words... But I was nicely surprised. This isn't that bad at all! A slightly different sound to a good song we all know and love... The guitar was great!
Some of the comments here are laughable , probably by people with Ramones tees who don’t own a single record , or just the usual sheep U2 haters. Johnny Ramone insisted the bands didn’t do slavish covers of the originals, plus anyone expecting another vocalist to Out Joey the great Joey Ramone is plain stupid for starters. It’s a decently played version of a song by a band U2 have cited down the years as being - along with Television and Patti Smith - one of the major influences on them starting a band. Bono & Edge we’re both punk rock fans as kids ( they are also known to do The Damned classic ‘New Rose’ during rehearsals) . Seriously there are much.much worse versions of Ramones songs out there, but hey it’s fashionable to knock U2 so hey,ho let’s go.......
