Wow! The test cuts at the end are on fire!!!🔥 Congrats on pushing through the first failure with the steel. Such a bummer. But the end result is a great payoff! Well done with your build, man. Looking great. Cheers!
Thank you🙏 Making RUclips videos is a great excuse to do things that you would not normally do, like cutting stuff in a darkness with black suit on😁. These challenges are great way to learn new things. Cheers!
Thanks. I need to watch your video, i've been so busy that i haven't have time to watch any another yet. Deadlines are good to get stuff done but when things go sideways pressure starts to rise. But still it was fun challenge.
That was crazy! The showcase definitely was fitting for this beast of a sword. Awesome work! P.S. I hope dry cleaning for the suit wasn't too expensive 😁
What a coincidence! I started a damascus san mai katana a couple weeks ago with apexultra core steel and had the same crumbling issue from overheating - thankfully it was just at the tip of the tang. Sorry the first blade didn't work out 😣
I even knew that it is more sensitive to heat than basic carbon steel. But i thought it will be just fine to do it like i normally forge weld 52100. It was stupid of me to not try it first with some smaller billet. Bit pricey learning experience. I tried to make couple small puukko blades from the pieces that seemed to be ok but they snapped and apex ultra was burned inside even the sides seemed ok.
Oh man! I felt your pain after your steel was cooked. I did that a few times over this past summer and it’s not a good experience. 😭 I love the look of your guard!
I've should have tried that Apex ultra forge welding with something smaller first. I was over confident to handle it. Probably next time I'll ne more careful 😁
Wow that sucks losing three days of work and the cost of materials/wear and tear on tools. Good on you for pushing through and getting the build finished. The final product came out looking fantastic in the end! The cut test clips at the end are amazing!
It's totally about what kind of katana you bought. If it's cheap Chinese one, sharpen it with what ever stone or diamond sharpener. Maybe you should ask the seller, how they do it.
@@leppicknives9830 lol, yeah you're right. I had my phone sync'ed to the TV and it had already rolled on to your video while I was commenting on the previous video I watched. Sorry about that! I dig your katana and all the cut tests! The pattern looks really nice.
Does that sharpie help the welds stick?😛😁 jk. I've never seen nor used apex ultra, what kinda steel is it and what kind of scrap would it be in? Love the outfit you chose for testing the sharpness❤
Apex ultra has been on market mayby for a year now, it's high carbon steel that is designed by knife makers and metal guys. It has 1.4 carbon and can be hard as 66hrc after tempering. That high carbon content makes it easier to grumble in the forge and i just over heated it while forge welding the billet. It was fun to take bit more time and effort for testing. Making RUclips videos is a great excuse to do stupid stuff.

Does it make any difference with modern steel? The damascus folded steel would most likely be as good as any traditionally made sword. But how to test it...
@@jaques2510 not sure but to me it feels like a traditional style is build to purpose, soft back and sides for parrying blows and hard core and edge for cutting.
