    Hi, I set up a similar grow station using two T-12 Shop lights parallel above a 5-foot table. Once I made a dedicated investment into growing garden plants, I had success. My timer runs 14-16 hours (4x40W bulbs, 6500K) and I really don't notice any difference in power consumption. Also added a 150W HPS on another table, and it is amazing!. Just tape some 99 cent foil on both sides of the florescent light fixture to concentrate the light, the plants think it is just a cloudy day. Another thing that's cool is using rope pulleys to raise/lower the lights, way easier than chains and fairly inexpensive.

    Thank you for all these tips - what a great setup!!
    I do programming - built several networked MQTT controlled devices in our house to open garage doors, turn on lights, motion sensors - even Alexa voice enabled - all controlled through a custom phone app. But... sometimes a simple old-fashioned $10 mechanical dial timer is all you need for the job. Just match the amp rating of the timer to the amp draw from the number of devices plugged into it.
    Also - I lost track of how many gadgets I've lost the operating instructions to over the years! Solution? Just plug the model number into a Google search... you'll usually find the instructions in less than 5 minutes. Then, save them in a personal online repository - like Google Docs. 😉

    For what it's worth, I only use my greenhouse for about 2 weeks of the year. I start all the plants in the basement where they spend several weeks. They only go in the green house to harden off for a week or 2 prior to being planted in the garden. Indoors everything is controllable whereas in the green house you are at the whim of the weather, temperature and length of daylight hours.

    Hi, I'm in Burgundy, France. I've started also artificial lighting since 2 or 3 years now, to start seedlings indoors. I would like to ask you a question about cabbages ; did you already try to germinate them in your basement ? I use 865 T8 fluorescent light bulbs of 6500 K temp. My seedlings germinated well when my TL block was at approx. 50 cm above de soil level. But I think when I lowered the block to 20 cm to avoid legging of the seedlings, they started to dry out (first the cotyledons, then the true leaves) and finally died. I don't know if it's the reason they died, because some of the that were under a velux and protected under a plastic greenhouse cover died in the same manner. Do you have any idea what this could be ? The other seedlings that are growing in the same conditions (temp, light, lighting time, etc) are fine (peppers, basils, beetroots, spinaches, salads, celeri, artichoke, french marigolds). thanks for your advice,
    Sam

      I'm an automation integrator in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Here's my take on your question. If you are going to be setting up lights, water timers, and maybe some sensors for temperature, humidity, flood, or anything else, you're probably furthest ahead to use an automation hub. I like a basic one that I can program (Vera Edge from Mi Casa Verde) myself but you might prefer something like a SmartThings hub. Then get sensors that use Z-Wave or Zigbee instead of WiFi. They use less power and are designed from the ground up for these sorts of installations. Increasingly these can be found at big box stores but there are some specialty online retailers too, like Aartech.ca in Canada or SmartHome.com in USA.
      A starting shopping list might include:
      - SmartThings Hub V3: CAD$99
      - GE 14282 Plug-in appliance module: CAD$53
      - Dome DMWV1 Z-Wave water valve actuator: CAD$129
      Another advantage to getting a hub is then you can more easily put automation into other parts of your home, like porch or yard lights, freezer (a temperature sensor to make sure it's not thawing), irrigation sprinklers, thermostat, or almost anything you can think of.
      Good luck
      - James

    Do you know what the appropriate distance you need to have your seedlings away from the lights? I have read blog posts saying that if the lights are too close. It can actually damage the plants

    • @BackToReality
      @BackToReality  3 года назад

      Great question! We usually try to keep the lights as close to the plants as possible, because the sun is WAY brighter than our indoor lights could ever be, and so we want to maximize the amount of light that reaches the leaves. However, as you said, putting your lights too close can also burn the plants. So, there is a bit of a threshold that you should aim to reach, but not cross. But unfortunately, this is mostly dependent on the type of lights you're using (LED/incandescent/fluorescent, size, spectrum, etc.), and can range from a few inches to a few feet. So I think it would be best to look at the documentation that comes with your lights, and go with their recommendation. However, as a general rule, if your plants are growing tall and spindly, then the lights are likely too far away. But if they are looking brown, burnt, or curled, then the light is likely too close. For us (now a mix of LED and T5 fluorescent), we tend to stay somewhere between 6-12 inches, and that generally keeps us safe. I hope that helps. Good luck! :)

      Hi Susan.
      We strategically picked up seeds from different local stores this year. However, we know we need to put some more thought into this and will be researching suppliers for next summer.

    • @BackToReality
      @BackToReality  4 года назад

      @PushandillPushback That's a great question Susan. I can't recall exactly what I meant by "strategically" in this comment, as that was several years ago. However, we always buy from our local stores when possible. I assume I must have been referring to the fact that not all stores carry all the seeds we're looking for, so we usually have to shop around a bit (buy a few here and a few there, etc). Whereas, if we can find a supplier that has everything we need (or even just specific items that our general store doesn't carry or can't order in), then it's potentially worth building a relationship with them. I hope that helps :)

    I love your videos, they are well made. I want to try to say this politely, supportively. Can you make these in a way that shows your wife speaking in a way that are not scripted little lines on cues that you give her? I am sure that does not reflect your actual relationship, but watching so many of your videos, it is starting to be an uncomfortable pattern. I am sure it is unintentional. I am sure she speaks lots while you are working away, so why not include that sometimes. Sincerely giving feedback. I respect and appreciate the enormous work you put into these videos.

    its funny causes its cheaper to build a simple greenhouse then it is to build an indoor grow room also sometimes to much light is not good because it well make a lot of heat and cook your seedlings, i had to learn this the hard way and there was no way to raise the lights higher so this time im going to place a high temperature plastic panel over the lights, its 8 lights

    Pretty nice setup. The timer is a bit of overkill though. A cheap mecanical timer would have done the job. The watt meter is usefull though.

    • @BackToReality
      @BackToReality  7 лет назад +3

      Yeah, we completely agree about the timer being overkill. I initially looked into the Wifi enable timers simply because of the cool factor, but also decided it was an unnecessary expense. That was until I realized that the Wemo also had the ability to monitor and report on the power usage - all in one tiny form-factor. We hope to get some good information from it, that we can share with everyone else who might be wondering about the cost of running their grow lights. Thanks for your comment!

    How much were the lights and what are they? :)

    The explanation of things could be a bit shorter guys. As an example, you dont have to waste 1 minute of video to explain that it is handy to have an extentioncord where plugs cants reach a socket and that a timer on your lights is handy and convenient. It can be done in 10 seconds ;) Other then that it is really nice to see more annd more people growing healthy sustainable foods themselves. Keep up the good work.

    What were the total expense for lights, reflective materials, extension cords, hooks, chains, trays, etc... ?

    I did the same thing last year but I faced issues there was no enough air circulation or oxygen in basement and lost most of the plants either didn’t grow healthy or leaves dropped

    I've missed your videos. Any chance you'll get a greenhouse this year?
