    Kewl idea. Just a suggestion. I was part owner of a construction company in Florida, where it rains every day at noon just about. When you'r4e using visqueen, which is the plastic you're using here, take the 1x2 and roll it underneath the visqueen a few times then pull that tight when you've removed enough slack. That does a couple things. This will remove a lot of the moisture seepage, keep the wood from rotting and create an even better barrier for pests. Another trick is to use two 1x2's and loop the visqueen under the first 1x2 and over the second. That would allow you to more easily make adjustments and it braces the plastic between two breaks creating an even distribution for the plastic to be held making it much less likely to expand at the screws and tear. Another thing you can do is add a small lip with an overhang of the plastic using 1x4 strips on the three sides that don't have hinges. That will create a better run off and keep the wood under the plastic from rotting for much longer. Simple tricks to make your building last longer. Hope this helps a bit man! 😁

    I've been avoiding watching this video for a couple weeks as it keeps showing up in my youtube recommendations. Afterall, how difficult is it to build a PVC hoop cover for a raised bed? Nothing to it and who needs a video? Boy, am I glad I finally took the time to watch. It's a great video and demonstrates a simple, reliable, way to accomplish the task - far better than I would have done trying to rig something up on the fly,. Thank you!

    I saw a great idea on another hoop house video:. Install an extra handle on the raised bed below the handle for the hinged top. That way if it's windy, you can loop a bungy cord through to keep closed (or to keep critters out).

      Building a hinged hoop house is an excellent way to extend the growing season of your raised bed garden. It is a simple and cost-effective project that can be completed in a weekend with just a few basic tools. The first step is to measure the length and width of your raised bed garden, and then gather the necessary materials. You will need PVC pipes, elbow joints, screws, hinges, and clear plastic sheeting.

      Freeman Acres are you suggesting that no content creator can ever make another video about a subject if someone else has made one before? Just because two videos have the same subject, it doesn’t mean one is a copy of the other. Especially when it comes to the finite world of gardening. No one has claim over hoops houses, or the teaching of how to make them. You clearly have a gross misunderstanding of what plagiarism means.

    Thank you so much for adding in exactly how to figure the length needed for the arch. It made it so much easier to figure out what I need for short or taller hoops. I just need to find the arch length needed and then add for taller sides… ie. 4’ sides would add 8’ on to the arch length number… or 2’ sides would add 4’ to the arch total. You made that math for the arch easy! Never thought I would need pi, but still remembered it (3.14) all these years later. We are using conduit on some and PVC on others and I really needed to be able to figure out the lengths needed before buying. Thank you! Love these double layered beds!

      You can't use these to exclude bugs and still get any squash: Bees need to get to the flowers to pollinate them to get any squash. You would have to leave them propped open every day there are flowers, which with squash would be all summer! But they would be great for growing greens all winter, since they don't need pollination. Which is how the author used them.

    You rock dude! Love how you were concise yet detailed in your instruction! Amazing job... first time to your channel, can't wait to explore more of your videos. James, thank you for this helpful how to! One question I have for you and your audience: if you have feral rabbits, rats, squirrels, chipmunks and grackles to contend with, is plastic a sufficient barrier? I was thinking chicken wire but I like the longer growing season your design would provide.

    Very nice plans. I wrote the list down so I can make one for my one raised bed. Thanks. I’ve wanted to do this but didn’t know where to start. I think I may add one thing though. A washer inside the cap so the screw doesn’t pull out of the cap. Not that it will but just in case. Thanks James.

    Thank you for all the tips and tricks! I'm from Belgium so i do live in another climate zone, but i Learn so much from you! I just finished my first raised bed and got the pvc pipes from the store yesterday. Lets go make that hoop! 🤩 I did not find the T-pieces or the closed caps, but i'm gonne try to drill a hole in the frame itself and glue it with some woodglue. Its not too windy where i place it and i hope the plastic will also help to keep the frame in place. It' a trial and error proces i suppose, but i'm having so much fun with it! Thank you and keep up the fantastic work! 🤩

Now I water from the top of the hoop house and use my air compressor to blow is out if it's going to freeze.

    I would make one suggestion: Cut a notch into each end of your prop 2x4 so that your pup (or a child) couldn't knock it out and have the lid smash down on someone. A little V-notch would help hold it in place. Great tutorial; we may try it here in Maine. Hoop houses have always seemed like a pain, but with a hinged top, they make a lot more sense!

    Just a thought- drill a receiving hole into the wood and either place the pvc cap inside or just use the receptor without the cap.

  • @meanqkie2240
    @meanqkie2240 3 года назад +1

    This is great, well done, well edited! I used all pvc to build a similar light frame, just covered with chickenwire for a mobile day coop in my yard for growout chicks. Let them out of night coop, they run all flapping noisy stampede across the yard like you'll never see them again, then they turn and do the same coming back, repeat! Lol. Then pour morning ration in day trough in the mobile coop, they run in, you lower it. Keeps them contained where you want them in your yard or garden. Note, chicken wire is barely a slowdown to any determined predator, so an outer barrier like yard fence or else reinforcement on the mobile pen is critical to prevent loss.

    This is the best made top for a raised bed I've seen. It's mostly what I want. Wind is a problem if it is opened unless the entire roof comes off and if you're short of space.... a problem. But of course at some point the roof will be off full-time, SOooo, where to put it, store it? With this type of top it's impractical and unless it's 2 dimensional. Love to see some bright ideas... We built 4 of these last fall and they worked great. We’re about to start some new greens in them for the spring, even though there’s still snow on a lot of the ground here in Western MA. I’m wondering, what do you do with these in the summer? Do you just take the top off at the hinges and move it into a shed? Have you tried a similar build with insect cover for the summer?

    • @BaiZhijie
      @BaiZhijie 2 года назад +1

      I was also thinking about that, if you keep unscrewing and screwing the hinges into the wood, it might get worn out after a few seasons, some sort of permanent screw-bolt arrangement that could be done and undone each season might be better. Im not a builder so I don't know the technical name for these things.

    Your presentation and instructions on how to make a "Hoop House" are clear, concise, informative, very useful and user friendly. Excellent job, young man. Simply wonderful!
    The summers are cool on the island in which I live, in the Pacific Northwest. I believe I will implement your design for growing melons this upcoming summer. And in addition, utilize the same design to make a "Hoop House" using floating row covers instead of plastic for keeping pests at bay.

    i have 3 hoop houses. i just use 2 layers of plastic, 6 mil cheap stuff for insulation. i used to use bubble wrap, but i can't tell the diff with just the 2 layers. if it was real cold, i would use 3 layers. also i heat mine to 40F minimum, so the insulation is important to conserve electric. another thing i use the large binder clips to fix my plastic, and unclip and store the plastic in spring.

    Followed this for two raised beds. I live in a colder humid climate, subject to heavier snow. I had to make a slight adjustment to the placement of the middle side supports. Running them under the middle half hoop eliminated the small shelf you see when placing them on the outside. Snow was building up along the side cross supports placing a lot of pressure on the connecting tape. Just sharing should anyone in a similar climate attempting this.
