    I am getting my first seed tray started today. I discovered that apparently not all seed trays are the same. The plastic containers that sit down in the larger tray of what I bought are quite a bit smaller than the planting pellets I bought. I discarded the plastic containers and just used the larger tray and put the pellets in it. I guess we will see how well this works. Thanks for your video.

      Since he is a farmer, I'm guessing he has well water, not city water which is chlorine treated. I think he realised this halfway through his discussion lol. So for him, and any others in the country, well water should be fine if it's drinkable, but city dwellers would do best with distilled water.

    • @RealityChecks
      @RealityChecks 4 года назад +2

      @@rubylady7126 Not all city water uses chlorine. My local water is disinfected with chloramine which is safe for plants, seeds, and clones most of the time, or can easily be removed by boiling. I wrote a boring textbook of a comment with more information on the chemical and the process of purifying it elsewhere in this comment section because I don't think it's common knowledge that chloramine is used in many modern city water supplies. Not too long ago, the assumption that all public water supplies have chlorine would have been a safe bet. I just hope the information helps someone! Running out to buy distilled water isn't as easy of an alternative for me as I'm sure it isn't so easy for a lot of people who deal with transportation problems or disabilities such as myself (I'm not that old, but I have Gout and RA so getting around is very challenging for me). Aside from the chlorine issue, this is a fantastic video for help using these little peat pellets! I love Jiffy, myself.

    For better result on seed in packets. They to need be rehydrated Add a 1 table spoon Hydrogen peroxide to 1 cup of distilled water.Soak about 20 mins. You will have to fish out them. I plant 3 seed per pod. Add half & half 1 pt peroxide to 1pt warm distilled water and soak your pods .For a gallon just double it.

    I am just now getting my seeds going. I am using peat pellets for the first time. Do I water them after the initial warm water that makes them expand? If they need watered do you use a mister or put water directly in the tray like when expanding? I really appreciate it. Happy Gardening

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  5 лет назад +4

      Debra, so only use warm water for the first expansion of the seeds. Don't put your seeds in until the temp drops to around 80 degrees....you won't need to water for quite some time...leave the cover on for a day..then take it off for an hour or two to let them breath...once they sprout out...leave the cover off after about 4 days of growth and thinning down to one seedling per pellet. You'll know when they need water...you need to let air circulate on them and if you overwater you'll get mildew or fungus....let them breath after they have sprouted...you can use a mister or just pour into the tray...be careful if you over water just leave them open and let a small fan gently blow on them..it will evaporate. DONT OVER WATER! Thats the biggest tip I can give you. Get a tiny pair of scisors from a nail trimming kit and thin them about 3 days after germination...hope this helps ya

    I bought my house with a small sun room but have no idea how to utilize it in the winter. Can I grow things using this system in my unheated sun room, in February, like you? I'd love to start sowing seeds much earlier than before where I'd wait for the last frost to begin. I now have 4 big window boxes I have to fill with flowers and realized, once I got them that they are huge and will be extremely expensive to fill unless I learn to grow my own flowers. Any tips would be GREAT! Oh and do you just plant that whole pod in the ground and how do you know when to put it in the ground? Thanks for any and all advice!

      This method works very well for mile high seeds. I had to cull my garden to remain within legal limits. So sad to kill them.

    Hey, been awhile, can I do this with grow lamps, a heating pad and the lid to germinate or do you suggest I remove the lid? I've found the specialized heating pad speeds germination. 'd remove the lid once germinated of course. Would there be any benefit to moving them outside in the day when I already use quality grow lamps? Thanks much

    I'm propagating chilli and pepper seeds in the peat pucks at the moment, but they absolutely reek of alcohol and they're not sprouting. No idea what I've done wrong! 😭😭 They're being rehomed to the warmest room in the house in case that helps. Any advice?

    Ok I need some help! I started my corn and Bush beans in jiffy pellets...(this is my first time) and had some delay in getting my garden ready, long story short, the roots of my corn and beans grew into each others pellets!!! So now I'm transplanting them into the biodegradable pots, they were a twisted up mess!!!! I wanted them planted before now but it didnt happen so I'm really REALLY HOPING I didnt make them too mad, i also added some root booster to all of them but the back of the bottle says a half of a cap per gallon of water and also says vegetable take 1 cup! Yes 1 CUP! IS THAT PER PLANT??? that just sounds like way too much so i just divided it up and gave each one enough to make the soil moist, i made a gallon and just distributed it that way i hope they all got enough.... do you think my little plants will make it? Oh, I also was very careful and all of my plants had their longest roots when I transplanted them I do feel a little better about that

    I have a dilemma as a new gardener. I just seeded Cucumbers and Goji's a week ago under grow lights before I learned from you not to do it too early from last frost date. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the sprouts going "alive" till planting outdoors?

    Do you cover it with soil after? I always thought you have to cover your seeds after planting.

    Hey, I don’t know much about these things, all I have to plant at the moment is Morning Glory flowers, are those ok to plant in these? Or should I go to the store and get something else?

    Is there a mesh or something holding the pods in that shape? Do you have to remove it before transplanting? I’m hoping to do impatiens this weekend.

      There is a mesh. It is supposed to biodegrade but I found that it didn't for me. I had some tomato and jalopeno sprouts that I put into a larger container and the mesh was still there with no roots growing past it.
