  • How to Identify and Avoid Overwatering and Underwatering in Seedlings - and It's DAY 31 of our 31 Days of Giving | Zone 5 Gardening
    In today's video, we focus on the ever important step of watering seedlings.
    We know that overwatering seedlings and underwatering seedlings both can have devastating impacts on your seedling development which can then create huge problems when it is time to plant your garden outdoors. So, in this video we talk about the signs you can look for to determine if your seedlings are either being underwatered or overwatered, and then we talk about proper watering techniques that will help you grow the healthiest seedlings.
    Thank you for watching!
    Today we have two giveaways.
    The first winner receives a $25 Amazon gift card.
    The second winner receives both a heat mat and seed starting kit:
    amzn.to/3Gmkcqf and amzn.to/3GqYTVG

    I battled fungus gnats a bit already this year. It was really my fault. I wasn't thinking and I brought a small plant from my outdoor green house inside to my grow area. I saw the little gnats the next day but it was too late. It was DE that ultimately fixed the problem.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Год назад

      DE has been a great help to us in the past as well. It is definitely effective!

    Congratulations to the winners! The seed germinating mats are great. I have one wrapped around some cacao plants, and they work just as well around pots as under them.
    Over- and underwatering are probably both things I tend to do, depending on what each plant needs. I constantly fight with fungus gnats. Sticky traps and tiny spiders have all but eliminated them now, but I'm keeping an eye on them.
    I usually bottom water twice a week, but I'll also use a spray bottle on the surface of dry soil to help pull the water up through.
    Thank you for your helpful videos, your generosity with the giveaways, and the encouragement within this channel's community. I won those great lights on Day 10, and have already seen a significant difference in my plants.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Год назад

      It is especially challenging when the top looks dry, but a little below the surface it isn't. I think that is likely why many overwater. We have been guilty of that for sure.

    Good video. I've been farming for like 15 years and it's probably been like 4 years since I really screwed up my seedlings, of which I start around 5,000 at a time. It had been so long since I even thought I overwatered I'm having to relearn the signs and symptoms. My new growth is coming in purple, which leads me to believe the water has diluted the available phosphorous in the seed starting mix. Nothing I can do until this soil dries out though, ugh.

    if its Cannabis i´d say it needs to feel kinda moist and wet pretty much all the time if like here .. even in Denmark if the doctor allowed to grow a Cannabis for Medicinal use they take alot more than alot of regulare i bet cus its from a Tropical China area ,,Originally" i know over 100 variations of them may do well in Nordic reagions and clima BUT some basics may be good for just a kinda thing like Cannabis its around 25*c and a pretty wet area i guess not to overdo it of course but they do require more water than most .. pretty much daily on average .. AKA they do well in moist or wet soils if you got permits for them and they are good looking at basics even if it was for industry or something else fx .. but i guess its to focus center area around the seed then i guess ? if Cannabis that requires water alot fx then you can start with a big pot if done right .. and it will sometimes grow several cm´s at a day if suns on and it has water and right amount of hours of sun and over 20*c average

    Last year I used coir and it molded. It needs a lot of perlite.
    This year using Promix and have a small problem with white mildew/mold. Don’t care for seed starting mix as it’s too muddy. Growing in cell packs with root air layering. Have fans on, but there we have a problem. The cells dry out unevenly from fan. Trying oscillating fan today, maybe it will improve. Today I sprayed sparingly Neem oil on the spots of white mold, we’ll see. Onion starts are looking great and may need to repot before planting out. Wonder if cell packs would do better in a low tray to allow more air. Not all cells dry evenly and trying to figure it out. I used a sprinkle of granular organic fertilizer and water from the top to work in. I have watered from the bottom and that doesn’t seem to evenly hydrate and tray is level.
    Herbs attracted aphids? Think I have that covered, but never had this problem before. Using yellow sticky traps for gnats.
    What do you advise for fertilizer for food like lettuce grown inside?
    Trying artichokes this year and they look like they will be taking over soon.
