This is so good! SO much better than relying on guesswork or moisture meters. My grandfather grew a huge garden every year and he would sometimes lean over and poke a finger in the soil. Sometimes he'd go get the hose and sometimes he didn't, so if he left to get the hose I would stick my finger down in the hole and feel what he had felt. I learned, and by the second year I'd see him looking down at some plants and I'd beat him to it. I still remember him looking at me to see if I would nod or shake my head. I loved that man like he was a God.
I watched pinball preparedness video this morning about all the pesticides on our food and so many comments were people wanting to grow as much of their own as possible!!! Well I put a long comment about you and how your teachings are short, to the point, easy to understand and usable for anyone !!! The timing of this vid. was a little surreal.... I watched it just after coming home from a very early medical appointment. A hot day today in Melbourne [38C +forecast] - so I immediately watered my pot plants BEFORE coming inside! Alas, I used the "pick up" method for some plants that require a little more hydration, "just to be sure"! I did not utilize your brilliant idea of clearly determining hydration requirements via direct weight comparisons .Just many years of trial and error I suppose until I acquired the" muscle memory" to which you explain! Your method Nate is so simple yet will be so helpful to many gardeners, for sure! 🥰🍀
Hmm never thought to lift them up - I've always done what I saw my dad do when I was a kid - he always stuck his finger in to plant pots to see how wet they are, so that's what I grew up doing!

Taller onion greens falling over so we started snipping, then started your DIY seedling fertilizer. They are beautiful. First time trying onions. Thank you Nate. Q . how short do you suggest?

For the algorithm! I'm experimenting with bottom watering by placing 3" PVC tubes vertically in my 10x20 trays and watering through the tubes. Hoping it will save me from buying twice as many seedling trays. Also, a lot of people using YT are viewing it on their phones and don't know how to give a like. You have to put the like button embedded in your video to help them along.

Hey I learned a lot from your videos I have a plant that had root rot I cleaned the roots now the plant itself still looks dead it’s like it’s not taking up water
depending on how severe it was there may be no recovery possible... but I would give it a good soak of LABS at 3oz a gallon.... let the root ball soak in there for 10 minutes or so and that will def help the healing process.... also add some aerated compost teas if growing with living soil

You hit the nail right on the head! Just like talking a gallon of milk out you can feel how much is left just by holding it, same idea. This is one of the hardest things for new gardeners. Took me 2 years to finally get it. I love how you simplify everything and make it understandable so everyone can enjoy gardening!
Would have liked to have seen you weigh the red Solo cups; the weight for the super dry one vs the weight of the cup with the correct amount of water in the soil.... How many ounces of water difference...??
What brand is your scale? We have the smaller battery scales and they are too small to read (display is on the scale) and the batteries dies out in cold weather…. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
yes absolutely so long as you have the ability to lift the pot without crushing the soil and disturbing the roots (fabric pots no).... the weight will tell you everything you need to know!

I've always started my seedling with cell trays of anywhere between 15 and 72. Now I am thinking I might not be growing optimally. It occurred to me watching your excellent video that each of my cells is an island. Unable to drift moisture/nutrients from its neighbor. I have always used the 'weight' method...but the seedlings are not connected while growing...not sharing resources.
@@gardenlikeaviking Thanks...changing it from now on. There may be an advantage to the seedlings knowing each other is there...perhaps the communication network is in play fairly early via the soil. Either way...makes so much sense.
Personally I would take the mixture out of the pot and refresh it with worm castings or more soil then put it back into the pot so the formation of mold and fungus does not begin to take place
Great video but please don’t try to judge it on weight. Instead do the self-watering (wicking) double cup method and actually see how much water is left.

I slosh mine around in the jug to guesstimate level. It's not weight it's centrifugal force that lets me know when I need to buy another gallon.

that is absolutely correct my friend each cell is like its own pot and its tough to tell the saturation of each cell

Problem with that is the plants get bigger and heavier..
If I over water my seedlings and they die can I just add new seeds to the same starting mix

I put a water bottle of water between 6 pots planted u think that's enough water to dampen the soil in that area the seeds in. Maybe a shot a pot
