    there’s an interview sam did a few months ago before the album came out with the guardian where he talks about how growing up in the north east was and how hard it was to talk with his dad about expressing emotions and grievances. the second verse in large part is actually about sam seeing his dad kiss his mothers (sams grandmother) forehead after she died and how it’s the first time he has seen his father so emotional, with sam saying “one day that will be your forehead i’m kissing” about his father when he will die… the whole album really is about sam growing up (hence why it's called seventeen going under) and it’s heartbreaking on many occasions but fucking beautiful!

    The North of England is in general one of the poorest areas of the country, there are a lot of old working class communities and people- men especially, as a general trend aren't that good with emotion and expression. Sam spoke about how growing up they had stuggles, his mum became disabled and he said they struggled for money so much at one point he contemplated selling drugs. Sam talks so well about toxic masculinity I think this song reflects the tragedy of that inabiity to express yourself and the damage it does.
    I always love hearing your opinions on things. Hope you are okay, thanks for that bit of joy you just brought.

    His "dad" is Stephen Graham.
    Up there as the greatest British actor of his generation. 👌
    The song is about his relationship between him and his dad, and how it's frowned upon to show your feelings as man in the working class community he's from.
    As a result things get bottled up, and then explode in arguments and violence, rather than expressing how you really feel on a regular basis.

    I reaaally like this album!!! My favs are: Mantra (iconic first two lines), Spit of You, The Leveller, Paradigms, Getting Started, Seventeen Going Under, The Dying Light (connected with Dead Boys from his first album), Long Way Off, Get You Down, Angel in Lothian, Pretending That You're Dead (very young-dramatic track with a melody that reminds me of The Cure) and Good Company (that melodically is not something that I would listen frecuently but THE LYRICS! So relatable that it hurts... but in a good way, like you are finally seen).

    Arguably, Sam Fender is the one of the best songwriters of his generation. He's such a superb and interesting young musician...Check out Seventeen Going Under, Play God (Vevo Live), Get You Down (Live on Later), Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored (Live Lounge). Honestly, Hypersonic Missiles and Seventeen Going Under are 2 of the best albums crafted recently...just flawless.

    The video features probably one of the UK’s finest actors, Stephen Graeme who plays the father. If you listen to the lyrics it’s about Sam watching his father kiss their mother goodbye as she’s dying and the father’s ability not to be able to discuss his feelings about what happened. Possibly, as Sam in the video reminds his father of his mother as refuses to addresses the situation 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I am also so glad that you reacted to this song and that would be lovely to see your reaction to the whole album! (I wanna say that I love those 'extra' songs from deluxe version)
    Taking about this song, I'd like to add to some comments that his parents indeed divorced and the song is him talking about how he is like his father (obviously) and how it was difficult for them to talk about feelings and emotions. In one of the interviews he was describing it as they were fine with discussing some random/abstract things, but when it would come to something more serious it would also get harder/awkward or something like that

    The ability to write a song about such tender/emotional stuff is never a given. Sam absolutely nails it on this. Bucket loads of emotion delivered superbly. The sax solo near the end just takes it to another level, then the end guitar just sends it off in a way that delivers the perfect ending. Nice one wor Sam...

    Geordie here. "The spit of (someone or something)" is simply Geordie slang for "exactly the same as". Good to see Sam bringing more of his accent back on his second album. But if any non-Geordies need help "translating", I'm more than happy to help. Oh, and if anyone hasn't listened to his track "Aye" yet, I suggest you should - shows how much Sam has developed as a musician/songwriter in a short space of time IMHO :)

    The album is wonderful. Lyrically and thematically it's a lot more cohesive than his first one, way more introspective, and listening to the whole thing feels very rewarding. Emotionally draining, of course, but rewarding, too. And there are some tracks off his first album - 'The Borders' is a MUST - that you definitely need to listen to if you wanna react to his second one. And on top of all this, he's a very talented musician. The more you listen to his songs, the more you appreciate them. There are some basslines or drumming patterns that you don't necessarily notice on your first listen.

    The story behind this one is that his parents got divorced and his dad moved, so he was alone with his mum (he has an older brother). They gave him a guitar as a Christmas gift after the divorce but the whole relationship between his parents was chaos. He didnt spoke with his dad for a long time because they always ended up talking about all this childhood things he saw and the lack of trust, communication. The second verse talks about when he lost his grandma and saw his father vulnerable, he talks about the feeling of losing his dad someday.

    • @racontaurus
      @racontaurus 3 года назад

      plus the social pressure of being emotional and sentimental hit him and the way everybody in his home town was raised, so there was a huge lack of expression and a stereotype.
