Both sam and his dad find it hard to communicate with each other due to how both were raised. That "men need to be tough" mentality, so they both have that issue. Same is growing older and realising these issues, but also realises this is how his dad is. The father bent over his mothers casket when she died, and he was crying, and Sam remarks how hes never seen his father like that before. Both of them know they love each other, but its awkward to say it etc. Its just a song about their relationship
