Yours is the only system I found extremely useful out of numerous RUclips videos that I watched on this topic. It’s not complicated, overly excessive, and has relatable categories. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Chani. Like you, I find that filing systems can be overly complicated. Starting with a basic system helps you not to get overwhelmed, because there is always a lot to think about. You can always build on this system and customize it to fit you.
This is the best video I’ve seen on filing categories! Thank you! The only thing I would maybe change is that it’s probably best to keep Social Security cards, Birth and Marriage Certificates, deeds and vehicle titles in a fireproof box or safe just in case there’s a natural disaster.
I have watched many filing videos and yours is the best- simple but easy to understand. The whole main category and subcategories and how you went through them helped me tremendously. Thanks! Finally after 20 years of a filing mess i cleaned it all out today and organized my files for our business - took 13 hours but it was so worth it. Old stuff is filed in file boxes by year back seven years and only current stuff is in the office file. Stuff older than seven years is shredded.
My mom passed and being executor of her estate I really needed some help on how set up a file system for this project. Thank you so much And I'm sure my attorney thanks you too.
Notes have been taken and I can’t wait till I get started!! My filing system has been some what in disarray 😬 to say the least! And I’ve been piling paperwork for 5 years now. “Organised chaos” if you will 😂 but soo ready to have a proper filing system!! Thank you for your video! It’s been very informative! 😊👌🏼
I don't know if you are still available, but this is easily the best video and simplest way to start my file organization. Thank you for the printable list of categories. Do you have other similar videos?
Michelle. here is a spread sheet that outlines the categories, docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P32G_R8rLodG3V8KHCpuvFjkYNlIZD_EuUTcSndANSc/edit?usp=sharing
Hi Kate. Usually I don’t use folders or fasteners inside my hanging files if the categories are small, like Bank Name/Checking account. If you want to have broader categories then I would use folders inside the hanging file. Example: the hanging file would be Bank Name and the folders would be Checking and/or Savings and/or Mortgage. There are so many ways to file. Make it your own.

I'm in Canada so maybe we call some things differently, but what is an HOA or an EOB? I like this system very much. I just want a system that is very basic without the expense and complications of some systems.
Hi Monica. HOA means Home Owners Association. We have those in my area. It is a neighbor run group that provides things like trash service, lawn care and/or things like a swimming pool and playgrounds for a fee. EOB means explanation of benefits. They are sent by your medical insurance company. This is probably different (and maybe not necessary at all) in Canada since you have different medical system. Simply is better!
Oh, duh. I should've figured it out. BTW, don't be fooled by our medical system it's very good in some ways but still has a multitude of problems. Thank you so much.
Hi my name is tori we own a rescue foundation with over 180 animals and was wondering if we should make a file for each horse and then maybe there medical, ferrier work. Excetera. What do you think? I know everyone wants to go digital but its nice to have the paper work on hand. Any suggestions?
Yes, you are correct. A lot of people have gone electronic, but we still have clients who like their paper. It is still a good system even for electronic filing.
@@robbynswiscoski3964 the video is for a personal filing system. For your business, I would have a large file for each client, then separate by tax year.
? That's alot of files. Can't things b filed under the broad category instead of creating sub categories. I rather keep things more simple or have less files.
Janet McDaniel yes, you can have less categories. Whatever makes sense to you. As long as you can find what you are looking for when you need it, then it works.
I was thinking the same thing. I don't have or need that many files. I am going thru the paper this week, and I am amazed at how much I am able to get rid of. I think I am going to put a sign above the desk that says, "Do you really need to keep it?"

i can't find super large tabs labels like you show in this video. how did you make or find them?
You can find them at office supplies stores and on amazon. Look for 3-1/2" clear hanging folder tabs.

Thanks
Thanks.
Yes that thing which I wanted to get
Thanks.

Hi Tori. Yes, you are correct. Make a folder for each animal.
Wow, I'm gonna make it😂❤🎉
Great! You can do it.
is filing redundant now? I don't exactly do much, but what I do, do is all in digital format.
Yes, it is redundant for many people, but there are many people who still like paper. You can use the same system to create a digital filing system.
I dunno, but I think the general categories and subcategories are applicable to computer files too (^_^)
Great filing system and clearly organised. But I think with all the paperless driven organizations today most people would file this electronically.
Yes, you are correct. A lot of people have gone electronic, but we still have clients who like their paper. It is still a good system even for electronic filing.
@@BasicOrganization yes I am one of them, thank you!
How can I adapt your system to the paperwork of my bookkeeper clients and my sole properties hip where expenses are mixed use
You would need a customized filing system to meet your specific needs.
