Right after I saw this video I immediately went and took out all the interior folders and put the papers in the handing folders by themselves. It never occurred to me that this was a way to file papers but I love it. Without the interior folders the files look a lot neater and there really isn't a need for the extra folder inside.. Now I need to get new handing folders and labels because mine are different colors without a purpose and just make the draw look messy.

Pottery Barn has one very similar (pretty certain it's the same one). It's a modular set under the series, Build Your Own - Bedford Home Office Modular Components. This looks like the 2-shelf bookcase ($449 USD) stacked on top of the lateral file cabinet ($499 USD). There are endless combinations within the series. While pricey, Pottery Barn is very well liked for quality items.

Coincidentally did a big desk purge & re-organization early this AM. I've so often wished you'd outlined a budget/sum spent on all the stuff. How many years will it take to use all those label holders? Many of us are moving to scanners and i-cloud as fast, more efficient, less costly, easier retrieval. Would like to be reminded that 80% of retained paper is never needed again.

great point. I'm faced with 10+ years of paperwork to organize and it has come down to my wanting to scan it. I've been looking for the best scanner to do the job. Fujitsu make a couple of good ones. The Neat is not always compatible and has problems and is overpriced.

on TV they make it look so simple - not so if it doesn't work with your own computer. I called them asked questions, and all she told me was that if I didn't like it, to return. That alone tells me they're just telemarketers. Couldn't get any questions answered or it was vague or too general.

Great suggestion on color coding the tabs instead of the folders... let me tell you it is a costly mistake to color code folders! Searching for the right ones when they're either discontinued at your office supply store or just out of stock is nerve racking. One of the biggest keys to staying organized is making sure your chosen supplies are regularly stocked at the office stores and more likely to be a long term product. I've made costly mistakes by purchasing products which are gimmicky and have no production manufacturing longevity. White should be easy to find most of the time if not always! Thank you, Alejandra! You've changed my perspective for the better!

Still love to rewatch this occasionally! Love Freedom Filer, too, it is hard to imagine switching to anything else...but their new binder system sounds interesting. I love the look of my white hanging folders, too, but disappointed in the quality. They are made of a heavier cardstock, but often have alignment issues that make them hang funny, and they just don't seem to glide as well, either. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would go with a pale grey hanging folder (preferring the softer grey of Smead to the darker grey of Pendaflex) which still allows the colors to shine, and the gliding action is smoother.

I cannot find white hanging file folders - where do you buy them? (Staples doesn't have them) You also don't say where to buy the colored label inserts, but I'd prefer them not to be pre-printed. Suggestions? Thanks

Very helpful! I also would like to know what you consider permanent files. Looking forward to #2.

Hey Alejandra, great vid, but I counted 52 times you saying "so" unnecessarily. Try to avoid this linguistic crutch. Same goes for "like", but you're alright with that. One more piece of advice: use excessive hand gestures sparingly. This is constructive criticism and I hope you take it as such; love your videos, can't wait for more!

What do you put in the binders that are accessible regularly and are the colors the same categories as the drawer labels?

This is amazing! I love how you created a streamlined appearance with the white hanging folders. Question: You mentioned that you periodically purge your folders... Do you store all of your archived documents in your permenent section or do you have a seperate area for these items? Eg: 5-year old tax records. Thank you!

To make book organization more "functional", I use the iPhone app iBookshelf. I can scan my books, make a note what shelf it's on, then put them in any order I want. (I prefer by hight, rather than color!)

You were in my house, weren't you!? The papers sticking out, the labeling system leading me down one dead end to another. But then you talk about purging a "Fy Ling Cabnet." Huh? We so over my head. I'm gonna get it, seriously, you've helped me a lot and ah'm lovin' the good looks, OK?

I haven't seen if this is posted or not and I haven't watched your second video where you may have addressed this, but my biggest question is what goes into each category? Your red tabs are the things you never throw away - what things do you have in that category. What things do you keep in your tax document section. I would love to see more specifics. LOVE your tips and videos. Thanks for all you do.

You are brilliant! You get to the point quickly & describe everything efficiently! Not like those people who woffle on with all their personal crap & take so long to make a point if they even get there! Love your video!

I am opting for the hanging files, they work so well. The problem I have is my husband and I have the same initials. I am trying to not use our full names to save space. Do you have any suggestions. I am C and he is also C and we share the same last name. I think I might put Vital Records in a Binder. The binders are a great idea for frequently accessed documents. I also just ordered Pendeflex Ready-Tab Folders, I think it will be simpler with applying the labels. I am also using the color principals and making my own categories then printing them on Labels. Keeping a list of what is where, then I will alphabetize the spreadsheet and print it so hubby can find things easy.

I hate ordering by colour, especially My books. My books by the same author have to stick together by publishing year! Besides I have to put together the books of the same series! I don't care how beautiful it is! I hate colour coding, because it's not functional

Great ideas.. That USB cord would actually annoy me. I had a similar issue and ended up getting a wireless multifunctional printer and problem solved..

I use a pencil on most of my folders so I can erase the title and put a new title if I need to change the folder to something else [and not be wasteful and just throw away the folder just because I used ink instead of lead]. And I only use a pen on a subject when I know I won't be changing the title on the folder. Like, if I am working[which currently I do not have a public job], I would file taxes and I would have one folder and I would wright in ink on this folder because I would be keeping this folder permanently and not be changing it because taxes have to be filed every year, so that folder is permanent. The only change I would make is to add another folder to that section when that tax folder gets full and I would need to add more tax papers. But that is just me. I'm just OCD like that. lol...
