  • Wanted to share some tips and things to think about when selecting the right chainsaw for you.
Having a well working saw can make all the difference in your outlook when cutting firewood. A lot of working goes into cutting wood and if you spend most of your time messing around keeping the chainsaw running. It can really take a hit on the joy of the experience and your productivity.

One of the best things I ever did was buy an old Husqvarna, it's not my main saw but Ive learned so much working on it and fixing it. That knowledge rolls over to my other newer saws and looking at buying used saws

    Eric,
I bought the STIHL 362 this year. It’s an amazing saw. I had a hand me down McCulloch promac 10 10 from my dad. The promac was finally loosing power and not making it through the wood. My dad bought the Husqvarna rancher 455 it’s a good saw but, its just not quite as strong as my STIHL 362. I will keep the promac and all the memories of cutting firewood with Dad. I waited 18 years to get a STIHL and I couldn’t be happier. I hope you’re just as happy with your next saw as I am with mine. Enjoy your chainsaw shopping!

Back in April I picked up a 562XP with a 20" bar, I love the saw. I've run it in the cold and hot weather, no issues at all with the electronic carb adjusting, I can't say enough good about it.

Well done and I appreciate your openness to brands that you haven’t used. Due to back issues, i stay with saws around the 45cc range and have used an Echo for 2 seasons. Excellent balance, made in Japan, fast and handles the typical Canadian prairie wood not much bigger than 14 inches, aspen, elm, maple and oak. Having serviced many saws and of the opinion that since some of the Stihls are either Chinese made or parts made in China, (maybe US assembled?) they aren’t what they were. Chinese built carbs seem to have issues with lower octane fuel. In Canada, all regular fuel is 10% ethanol...which seems to mess up Stihl carbs. Keep up the high quality videos! You seem to be a man of integrity.

My dad has a Poulan that he bought in the early 80s and we cut firewood for three families every year since. Just last year he took it in for servicing, with no problems. Used it this year, and the way it looks we will use that saw forever.

I have been running a 562xp for 2 years now. I can not convey how happy I have been! I love it so much I just sold my smaller farm/ranch stihl and am picking up the 543xp for limbing. Also, Husqvarna has a 7 day no questions asked return policy on pro level saws.

For preparing two cords of firewood per year I'm very satisfied with my EFCO saw, MT 4100S. Very light, easy to start, and enough power (1.8kW) for my light usage.

My Stihl ms271 and ms311 have both been great. The 311 is a little heavy for limbing but with a 20” bar makes it a great felling saw here in PA. The 271 has been an amazing firewood saw.

Great video. You did an excellent job. Your background and hands on experience showed very well. I have a Husqvarna 460 Rancher 24" bar , my dads old Homelite Super Xl 20" bar, a Sachs Dolmar 120 24" bar all in great running condition. These are my most used saws. I also have a sizable old McCulloch group of saws some running and others waiting to to repaired to operating condition. I'm not restoring them but I do and will get them running. My most recent endeavor is working on two of my old McCulloch D30. Only made less than one year and is a center pull design. All of my big Mac are the 80CC size. I have several different levels of the Mac 10-10' and just love them. They are over 50 CC and can pull 24-28" bars. I love taking these old saws and bringing them back to life. They deserve better than a scrape heap. Keep up the great videos. Kent/Sally

  • @longlowdog

+1 for the MS 362, my early one has never missed a beat. Half the folk I hear complaining never read the hand book. If you haven't run it for a while make 5 similar cuts on one log, this ensures it has time to self adjust. If you used it last in 25 degrees and then take it out in -12 it just needs a wee bit time to adjust to the new air density. I really like the inboard clutch, it's no harder to clean or service once you realise just how easy it is to pop the clutch cover/sprocket holder off. They have all the poke you need to run fairly aggressive depth gauges on a twenty '' bar in all but the driest of standing dead timber. Buy well, cry once as you say. Great vid', glad I found your channel. Regards from Scotland.

I've watch a lot of videos looking at different ways to call trees. Also, I look at people with Alaskan saw mills. Most of the time they have a Stihl saw. I bought one with a 16 inch bar. I cut only for the garage now. Mainly a cord a year. I had my brother's saw given to me.It's a Huskavarna with a 20 inch bar. I use mainly the Stihl because it's lighter. Every once in a while, I get a tree that the Stihl isn't long enough. Then I use the Husky. Thanks for your videos! I enjoy watching them! I even pick up tips from them. Thanks again!!

Nice analysis and video! The electronic carb is fine , no problems with my Stihl MS 261C.
Husky and Stihl both have extendable warranty if you buy the oil or gas , and both are very similar in important ways , but like you said , it’s good to buy local on stuff like that - It’s the kind of thing it’s good to be able to talk to the mechanic , get some extra parts and deal with a shop that services pros , maybe your local landscape/ mower / garden shop . Big box stores are a waste of time and nobody knows the product .
Keep up the good videos !

Eric, probably the best video I have seen concerning chainsaws! You covered everything. I never operated a chainsaw until I purchased my homestead property. I initially purchased a Husqvarna 460 Rancher and realized it was too big for me as a first time user. I then purchased a Homelite and a Ryobi chainsaw and gradually gained my confidence. I gave both the Homelite (good & inexpensive) and the Ryobi (finicky and piece of crap) away. I just recently purchased a Stihl MS 180 for small pruning job. Both Husqvarna and Stihl are good quality chainsaws. The only 2 brands of chainsaws my hands will touch.

I have a collection I have a 2 stihl 026 great little saws and easy to work on these were my first saws about 5yrs ago all bought used obviously. I also have a stihl ms290 (my go to saw) which I really like I have both a 16" and 20" bar for the 290 but the 16" really rips through the wood. I also have a ms170 that was given to me still working on it. Last year our local True Value sold out and I purchased a Echo cs-352 for cheap, I like it for limbing trees as it much lighter but isn't great for falling trees. The fire department I am on also bought these saws for your grass rigs. my dad bought a saw a few years ago at the local shop called a Red Max don't know much about it but its a cutting machine. thanks for a another great video Eric.

I've had a ms362c for almost 3 years and being in Wisconsin she runs a lot in the cold. She likes to eat that's for sure. I've never had any trouble with the autotune at all and I run a 25" bar with it. I ONLY run non ethanol 91 octane gas and Stihl synthetic 2cycle oil. I change the fuel filter every year along with spark plug and air filter. I cut around 20-30 cords a year and that is all the maintenance I've ever had to do.
I also have a ms170 that I use for all the light work. I maintain it the same way as I do my 362. I hope this helps. :)

I've had a bunch of different saws through the years. Almost all Stihls. Lately I've gotten into an MS261 and MS362. Both excellent saws as they are pro saws. And I haven't noticed any carb issues either. I'm running a 16" bar on the 261 and a 20" bar on the 362. It's always nice to have the right sized saw for the right tree. And I like taking two saws into the woods when I cut. If something acts up, or I get pinched, I have what I need right there to get out of a jam and just keep cutting. The more I use either of these two saws, the more I enjoy them. Definitely treat yourself soon!

Nice discussion. I bought an 029 Farm Boss in 1989. We've heated with wood all but 4 of those years, maybe 3-5 cords a year (mid Atlantic). I have replaced the oiler pump. Still starts and runs reliably. Oh, as an important aside, I have milled a couple thousand board feet of hickory, cherry, poplar, sassafras, and red cedar. It's been a champ. I realize it is under-sized for milling, but has held up well with reasonable care.
UPDATE: recently ran into a barely used ms362 that I purchased. Have done some milling with a 24" bar - the increased power is wonderful. Interesting that it weighs about the same as the 029.

I run a 361 Stihl for my heavier work. I use a 170 Stihl for smaller piddly stuff. The 361 is by far the best saw I’ve ever owned or used (I’ve not had anything larger though). We have mostly Elm in my area and it has plenty of power for that. It really only feels heavy after hours of non-stop use. I don’t believe the 361 has the electronics that it’s newer replacement the 362 has, but I could be mistaken. I do know that the 361 has never let me down though.
I agree with you saying that you should buy the biggest/best saw you can afford. It sure is nice having a quality product that has plenty of power when you really need it. I have no issue spending more money for something I know is going to perform well for years to come.
Anyway-just found your channel. Love the content. Keep up the good work!

I love my Echo! I have only had an Old McCulloch growing up but now I still have the McCulloch on the homestead and now I have a Echo Cs-490. I have used it day in since moving in 3 years ago. I have cut over 20 + cords of wood with it. 20" Bar, all factory no mods or anything and Ive learned that good gas, good oil, and good chain are key. Now the Echo brand is the "Cheaper" saws but honestly good fuel, oil, and chain and you can have a day with any brand. Just my opinion. This saw is easy to service, the weight is good, parts are right on the shelf at Home Depot. Maintenance with anything is key!

    Great discussion points.
As a storm damage and yard pruning type guy... I bought "disposable" saws years ago.
And I'm Still running them. But I buy the ones I need, and don't expect more than they have to give. I run ethanol free, clean after every use and keep them SHARP. for my use, the saws have saved me hundreds in service charges to remove large limbs and prune about 40 trees on my 2 acre property. My first saw I bought to save tree service costs. It never died several years later with frequent annual spring and winter usage. Same with my pole saw. I also have another... Electric pole saw. Outstanding. My best friend heats with wood. He's a stihl man. I'm the homeowner who understands 2 stroke engines. For me, cheap will do in my retirement.
    Great video... Im subscribing.

As my first chainsaw I bought a new echo in June 2018 and I could not make it start and run reliable. I returned the echo and I got a Husky 562XP with a 24" bar. The autotune works fantastic and cold starting process is very repeatable. 2 or 3 pulls with the choke on then one or 2 pulls with the choke released to start. When hot most of the time starts with one pull. The break and clutch were never a problem in one year. With the learning curve I managed to ruin the bar and few chains... which has nothing to do with the machine. Recently I purchased a 28" bar and few chains and apparently I got enough experience so it looks that the chain keep sharp afters processing about 4 cords of Alder wood. I very much align with your presentation and I think is very useful. I wish I would have read it before I purchased my first chainsaw.

Hello Life in Farmland. I just purchased a Husqvarna 562 with the electronic carb. I found that it is easy to “flood” if you keep the choke on for more than two pulls on the cord. Regardless of what the machine sounds like, turn the choke off after 2 pulls. It will start on the third! I have had Husqvarna chainsaws close to 40 years and the new electronic saws are the best ever. Very powerful and efficient. I recommend Husqvarna more than ever.

I have a buddy who is not happy with his MS362. He said it's "too smart for its own good". On the other hand, I've never had a hiccup with my 562XP. After weather has changed, I'll have to rev it some on initial startup. Being a lefty, I liked the balance of the Husqy better. I'm totally satisfied, but to be transparent, I've never run a MS362. I do really like the MS260 that I bought cheap, and rebuilt the top end, and carb. The 260 has an 18" bar, I use a 271 with a 20", and the 562XP pulls a 24" with no problem. Glad I have the chance to help you, for a change.

Good point on service. I have a Remmington 20 inch saw (box store). Just a homeowner here that takes down maybe a tree a year. I have had problems finding a replacement chain. I hit a nail deep in a trunk and chipped the teeth. The replacement chain is Oregon brand. It doesn't quite work. It just jumps off the bar guide right out of the drive sprocket. It could just be a bad chain, but still a pain in the ....... It had no issues taking down a really tall southern 18 inch tree and bucking it up. It has had an issue idling but I just take out the plug and wire brush it and then it's back to running like a dream. It's probably because I don't have the oil mix right.

From Nor-Cal, I find my lil' 345 and 359 orange saws work well in the live, blue and black oak. My favorite saw is my Dad's 1963 1-52 Mac, it's 80cc, heavy and slow, but the sound it makes is better than any other saw that I ever used.

Great video. I bought a Sthil MS261 C-M. It is a great saw after I ran about 8 tanks of gas through it. The saw had much more power. The only thing I have learned is if you are a home owner and you have gas sitting in you garage or the saw it will go bad. Buy the pemix 50:1 it last for 2 years in the tank or 10 years not opened this will save you a lot headaches.

I have both a Husqvarna 455 Rancher with a 20" bar for remote cutting and a Oregon CS1500 corded electric with a 18" bar for pruning and bucking logs close to the homestead. The Husky has a lot of torque and powerful enough for almost any task I need it for. The electric Oregon is for lighter duty bucking but still plenty powerful with a 15 amp motor and is self sharpening. Thanks for sharing.

Some of the contractors (barn builders and custom vintage look homes) in our area have been switching to corded saws due to sound and pollution regulations. They also like the fact that no matter who uses it there is no worry about fuel mixture issues and general maintenance/storage concerns. One builder told me he has a dewalt electric that's used daily indoors and out and has been running problem free for years.

I have a 545 Husky, second one. Really like it as an older woman.Stay away from Green Tech. G Oil, bar oil. New saw was overheating, replaced oiler, overheated again within 30 mins. Dealership kept it to show the terrible pitting that G Oil had done. G Oil sent UPS right out to pick up the oil to test, admitted they had a bad batch and "would not leave me hanging with a ruined new "Husky" 545 chainsaw"....then refused to talk to me after they got the oil. Would not even return my calls.I left a message that I would tell the world when I got the chance, even if a small world.Great video's

I am a Stihl fan. I have 4 of them, two 440 Magnums, one MS311 and the best of them all my O45. I also have a Husqvarna 61 and a 372XP. Out of all of them I have had hardly any trouble with my Stihl saws. My 045 my Dad bought brand new in 1976 and it is still the best saw I own. It will outrun and outcut any of my other saws, and has never had a single problem! And it has cut tons upon tons of wood!!

I have the MS260. The MS260 is a forestry grade saw. It’s very light, and a wicked saw. I’ve cut so many trees with mine. The only issue I had was I broke the gas cap, but that was in -15 degrees Celsius. You can’t go wrong with that saw, it’s amazing with a 16 inch bar, cuts fast.

The one other chainsaw you might want to look into is the Echo CS-620P. From what I read and hear it's very competitive on power with the other 2 60cc saws, it's $100 to $150 less expensive and you get a 5 year warranty to boot. My absolute favorite saw to cut anything with is the Husky 550XP. It really gets hot in the summertime though and it doesn't have enough weight to just sit on a big log and pull itself through when bucking but that makes it fantastic for just about every other aspect of cutting. I think the external clutch contributes to the well balanced, precise maneuvering of a light Huskie (sub 12 lbs.), but the chain brake absolutely gums up quicker and more often, but for me that's 3 fun thumbs up vs. just one frowny face!

I have a MS261CM. The electronic carburetor has been great! One tip is to make sure you let the saw idle for a couple of seconds before you shut it off so the carb is tuned for idle. If you do this it will almost always start up on the first pull afterwards.

I have a 562xp. I bought it 4 years ago. It got used quite a bit the first year and then less so. Then it sat for 2 years. I pulled it out of the shed a month ago and it fired right up. I do run husquvarana premixed fuel any time I am using it because I rarely have a big enough job to run through a full tank. Using the husky premix let’s me leave it in the shed without worrying about the condition it will be in 2 years from now when I need it again. I run a 24” bar. It’s a great saw.

The differences I've found are: 1. Pro saws run at a higher compression, so they'll have a compression release valve 2. Pro saws are much easier to rebuild the top-end 3. Pro saws have larger heat-dissipating fins on the outside of the cylinder

Stihl handles and brakes just seem flimsy but I could be wrong! I'm also probably a sucker for the metal accents on those new Husky saws. Check us out if you're into firewoodin' and chainsaws! Cheers.

Well I am watching this AFTER I purchased a chainsaw, but I did do some of the things you said to do. I went down to buy a Stihl wood boss and came home with the M271 Farm Boss. 3 cords in and it has run flawlessly. Starts easy and only stalls on the biggest logs. I think it is a great saw for smaller diameter logs like 12" or so. Cuts them like a champ.

@LifeinFarmland. I cut firewood every day, 5 cords a week. I have been using the 455 rancher. It's 100% worth the money. I just bought a husq. 395xpg. The 55cc just isn't fast enough to hit firewood production goals. You're right about the 455 though. It paid for itself in two days. I can't say enough good about it for home owner and farm use. I'll keep it in the truck as a backup.

Nice, informative video! I got a Toro battery operated saw last year, and loved it. It cut like hell, and would buck as much wood as I cared to deal with at any one time. Very cold and very hot temps shortened cutting time, but that's to be expected. It's only real downfall for me was bigger wood, and esp semi dry Ash. Very plentiful around here, due to the effing emerald borer beetle. Often the bark falls off, and the wood dries and seasons while still standing, so it's rock hard and tough on a saw. (the saw also seriously needed a sharpening by somebody competent, lol unlike me...) It's cut a lot of wood for me, nearly all Eastern hardwoods and a bit of spruce, and I look forward to cutting a lot more. As you said- no gas to mix, no carb to maintain, no need to start it at all! Just charge the battery, drop it in, and go. It even has a sightglass in the bar oil tank.
However, this year has dropped a BOUNTY of free wood in my lap. I've cut up all the smaller stuff I can get to, and am left with all BIG wood. I'm talking 30"+ Ash, Honey Locust, and Silver Maple- and lots of it. There are even a couple of 5 FOOT diameter maple stump cuts I can rip. The Toro was completely outclassed. So I went and got an MS291 with a 20" bar. The Toro will now be the go to for smaller jobs, and for ripping crotches and knotty chunks that defy splitting into sizes I can use. The 291 is a lot of saw for the amount of wood I go through, but needed to deal with this big yard tree wood. And also to be able to noodle the bigger rounds into halves and quarters.
Also, that Log Ox I see in your intro- I got one last winter, and don't know how I did without it! What a back saver when picking up fresh cut rounds!

I have a Stihl MS362 C saw. I bought it to replace a mid-90’s Stihl 029 farm boss. I’ve had the saw for a couple years now. I cut 2 to 3 cords of primarily red and white oak and some hickory. It is a beast. The MS362 is lighter weight than my old 029 but is much more powerful. I can cut more wood in less time and my back doesn’t give out. The 029 does best with a 16” bar 3/8” chain. I run a 20” bar 3/8” chain on the MS362 C. I run Woodland Pro Chains and Bars on both saws. Bailey’s online. Much Much cheaper and great quality chains.
    I am very happy

I'm a husky guy myself. Have an old 61,"old reliable"... Can't get parts for it anymore, but it is my favorite! Allways starts, hot or cold! 20 inch bar. Have used over 15 years! Bought a newer husky 261 10 years ago, and it will out cut my old 61, but it won't start if you sit it down for more than 15 minutes! Might as well let it sit for an hour. It is an EPA model. 20 inch bar also. My son loves it, but he doesnt heat with wood so he just uses it a little at a time.
I like 20 inch bars cause they are long enough to handle big logs, and I don't have to bend over as much to cut small stuff.

Trim saw, and buck saw for big wood. If you want one saw I'd suggest a 362 Stihl. Ran one with the M tronic, was amazing. Felt good. Power to weight was excellent. Only Stihl for me. Weed eater, saws, blowers, all Stihl.
