  • Complete on-line version: • Kickback
    A severe kickback is the most dangerous hazard of all for a chainsaw operator. The incident occurs in a fraction of a second and can cause injuries ranging from cuts and scrapes to amputations and death. This compelling 13-minute video opens with a re-creation of a fatal kickback incident. It then reviews important information every chainsaw operator needs to know about kickback, including how and why it happens and how to prevent it.

    Chainsaw Man Opening Kickback

    I've had this happen to me once, but not exactly due to kickback. This is another warning to all other chainsaw users. I had just fell a fairly small tree, and my chain was dull thus taking a lot of pushing and turning to make the cut. After it finally fell, I was potentially exausted for i stood there for a good 10 minutes trying to make the cut. Yes, I know I should have sharpened my chain, but I didn't. Anyway, after taking a step back from the fallen tree and I thought my saw had calmed down to a low idle, but it didn't. I let the saw rest against my body whilst unknowingly letting it cut a little ways into my knee. It wasn't serious, but if the saw wasn't a very small one and I was still throttling it, I'd have no left leg today. Be warned saw users, if u feel at all fatigued or tired to a big extent, shut your saw off immediately, drink lots of water, and rest until you are sure you're ready to begin cutting again... PEACE OFF PPL, XD

    Newbie chainsaw master here. So far, no problem with cutting trees - I've cut two 8" just today alone! I'm using one of the DeWalt 12" battery-operated and the closest I've come to getting injured is cutting thin branches off with the tree or branch on the ground. Placing my foot on the tree/branch to steady it and while trying to cut a very thin branch, the branch starts to vibrate, the cutting stops, then it kickbacks toward my foot. After about the fourth time, I let those little branches be.

    I experienced that problem with about a 2 to 3 inch branch just today. It was on a cedar I had just felled. I was cutting down on the horizontal branch, and the small end was on the ground. As I cut, the weakened branch pinched my saw as I was cutting downward. The pressure of the tree was pushing down on the branch I was cutting from the top side.The branch pinched the saw, and stopped the saw as I tried to pull out. I got it out okay, but that could have caused a kickback. Now I am a little more careful about being aware of a "pinch". Thanks
    Otherwise, the other videos show that most kickback occurs when cutting with the TIP of the bar. I am very careful about cutting with the TIP. The safer cut it seems, is done with the longer length of the bar and using the middle. Got to watch for those "pinching" factors. Everyone be careful out there, and stay safe.

    My dad almost got his head split open from a chainsaw kickback (up and back, into his face) when I was about 9, and I witnessed the entire thing up close, spurting blood and all. There was so much blood I thought he’d killed himself. Luckily he was wearing thick rimmed glasses that caused the saw to rebound off his face, thus saving his life. The chain brakes I use do that nicely, for rotational kickbacks, stopping the chain in milliseconds. The difficult one is the straightback kick. What you want to do there is to be clear of the rear of the saw. DAMHIKT Even a 60 cc saw can kick you like a mule- not hitting you with the chain, but with the rear handle of the saw..

    i think its safer to fell with a 50cc or higher saw and then cut up the felled tree with a smaller saw. i use my husky 142 and my emergency, tiny mccullac 16" saw for branches. sure theyve kicked back but a lot less than a bigger saw. My only thing on this vid was, he never gets into "what to do about it" just what it is... first thing is to stand to the side of the saw, not over it.

    6:48 and 6:52 why would you even cut bottom up instead of top down in these situations? Would it not be safer to cut top to bottom?

    • @Engineer9736
      @Engineer9736 2 года назад

      It's done on purpose just to show how the physics of pinching works. A tree can be under tension in either direction. If the log is supported on both ends and you start to cut from the top, then the blade will be pinched. If the log is supported from one end and in the middle and you start cutting from the buttom of the free-hanging side, the blade will be pinched. So it's not always just "cut from the top", it differs per situation.

    • @Engineer9736
      @Engineer9736 2 года назад

      The cutting direction depends on how the wood is under tension. Sometimes the top is under tension, sometimes the bottom. You have to determine that before cutting. If the bottom is under tension and the top under pressure, and the wood is liftable, i think it's best to put something underneath it so the bit you're cutting off becomes free hanging. Then cut from the top so the saw pulls away from you. If you cut from the bottom then the saw will tend to push towards you so it's better to avoid that.

    • @markpetersen912

      MrMeanderthal, shortly after I began running a saw I had the inertia brake kick in once. Once out of 7 years. I was bucking firewood out of a pile of logs and the top quadrant hit another log. It threw the saw up and back. I know it was the inertia brake because the brake handle had broken off long before I ever had the saw in my hands. Had just enough of a nub left to release the brake. Not sure that it would have gone bad had the brake not activated but I was glad to know it worked. I then took time after that experience to better educate myself about safety when running these machines, and keeping them properly maintained (ie, a new brake handle). It only happened once but it was enough to scare some respect into me. Stay safe!

    Hmmm, maybe the issue is not trying to cut something in one big swoop? If a tree limb is that big, why not put a V cut in there, so that as the tree caves into itself, isn't set so tight? Doing this in two various cut from opposite ends may prove to be a little more time consuming...but perhaps a bit safer? Yeah, this video scared me a bit more to attempt cutting my own tree limbs...but it's good to know how this happens before hand. And to bad this was only a preview...does this mean we now have to pay for the rest? One thing we learn the hard way is to use (plastic) wedges to keep kerf from closing. Mainly in situations where the top of the log is in compression. You cut partway from above, set a wedge or two in the kerf, then complete the cut from below. Can't have too many wedges. Don't have to hammer them in, "palming" them will often do nicely, and save lots of headaches or "mule kicks". DAMHIKT Then keep your body parts out of the plane of the chain.

    • @jacquesblaque7728
      @jacquesblaque7728 7 лет назад

      I write it because I can. :') Pretty standard acronym (DAGS [do a google search] that) meaning "Don't Ask Me How I Know That". It's all about brevity. Of course you could DAGS "DAMHIKT" and be done with it. Acronym often used where it might be embarrassing/incriminating to explain how you knew that. Next!

    • @julianaleo631
      @julianaleo631 7 лет назад

      I didn't know what it meant either... not everyone is up to date on 'slang' - it's a generational acronym, fairly new way of communicating. Though I would have to say this style is right up there with a person's habit of constant profanity. You may be in a rush to get your point across, but it would be worth while to use this platform to show some intelligence in 'writing and word usage'. If you are going to go so far as to explain - then finish explaining instead of using the Acronym - I'm sure your English teacher would be proud. I'm going to take a while guess that you are also under the age of 30. LOL (laughing out loud)

    • @jacquesblaque7728
      @jacquesblaque7728 7 лет назад

      What's a "while" guess? Your guess is waaaaay off, by more than a factor of two. You could work on some brevity too. :') As mentioned, a simple DAGS will suffice. IOW, KISS. OTOH, "WTF" is another story. TTFN.

    Sounds like this guy is speaking against better knowledge.
    Chain&sword jams = the saw comes to a full stop, no biggie.
    Chain pinched and sword loose = potentially BIG problem! When the chain gets pinched it slows down and starts to push or pull against the wood instead of cutting it.
    This makes the chain ride out of/into the wood, bringing the sword with it. Now, here is the one place inertia comes into play - good luck in stopping that saw when it comes flying out of that log!
    Seriuos looks and a cool voice does not make for an expert I'm afraid…...

    The first 1 minute and 36 seconds was long, boring, and IMO not needed. If you wanted to demonstrate the dangers of kickback you could have done that in just 10 seconds. There was no need to drag people trough the slow motion scene. We came to see what it is and what to do, so obviously we know it is dangerous and wish to avoid it. If we are using a chainsaw, or a drill, we know how the mechanics of each tool.
    With all that said, I did find the kickback information very useful and I did enjoy the level of detail provided. Drop the dramatic unneeded crap, make a simple 4 minute video, and this piece would be perfect.
