Nice Build! Actually very useful to learn from things you experienced! If you are doing a diorama, I recommend watching the John Wayne movie "They Were Expendable" to get ideas on scenery, buildings, water conditions, and general condition and weathering of the boats. The boats used in the movie are 80 foot Elcos like PT109 (probably late war product improved versions). The action scenes will also give you a feel for where crewmen are positioned and how the weapons are manned/used. Using silver to show wear on a boat wouldn't be realistic as exposed metal is almost immediately painted or coated with grease to prevent rust. There would probably be a dark brown grease stain on the grooves on the plates that the torpedo tubes traverse The ropes would be a darker color and vary in tone. The light tan lines you use look too "new". It may be the lighting, but the 37mm AT gun looks tan/brown in color. It would be painted Army OD which would be slightly different from the OD of the ship and might even be shown to have been spot painted by the crew. The spades at the end of the gun trails would have been either raised on blocks or somehow modified to prevent them from digging into the deck. The deck, being wooden, would show a bit more wear and possible variations in color. There would most likely be the odd ding in the edges of the deck where the boat could have rubbed against the quay or where any fenders would be installed. The 109 wasn't a new boat and Kennedy wasn't its first commander.
I built the Revell kit which suggests forest green for the boat with a gray under the waterline. Mine has the liferaft lashed to the bow before Lt. Kennedy made the modification by adding the gun. I would like this version simply because the 1/35 scale would be easier to detail. LIke your finished boat a lot. Cheers!

Great job Simon, this boat looks superb. I know you had a couple of issues with the build, but you found solutions for all of them and even built a jig to help you paint the beast. Need to get the elco 80 the nicest one! It's beautiful the merit 1.48 kit is absolutely amazing aswell built both my normal 1.35 and the 1.48 the 1.48 was a better build better kit all together! It comes out same size as the British Vosper in 1.35 the Vosper being a smaller rig but still a big amazing detailed kit!
Very nice model. I decided on mine not to include the 37mm gun on the fore deck since it was only on for a short time. The PT 109 was outfitted with the tow-able 37mm Anti Tank gun the day before she was lost.
Incredibly inaccurate build of the 109. At the time of her loss, she did indeed have a 37mm gun lashed to her foredeck, but she didn’t carry a ship’s mast nor the aft torpedo tubes. And those are the two most obvious errors. You missed the other mistakes made by Italeri as well.

One thing I noticed right off. The 109 on the front of the chart house should be above the 2 windows, not between them.

Kudos on the clear windscreen. Mine was such a mess I painted it solid.

Randy, do you have a reference that the aft tubes were not installed at the time of the loss?
What an awful build. You’ve missed plenty of errors in this kit.
