- A Lockheed F-104N Starfighter operated by NASA collides with an Air Force North American XB-70 Valkyrie over California's high desert near Edwards. Six years later, the second production Tupolev Tu-144, a supersonic passenger airliner, disintegrates and crashes at the Paris Air Show in front of 250,000 people.

The pilot of the Tupolev was of the same ilk as the hotshot B-52 pilot that crashed at Fairchild air base in 1994.
Yes
One thing they proved, you can't fly a transport, and bomber aircraft, as if it were a fighter.
🎉tr😊😊⁶
That B 52 pilot of the plane ha been in trouble for showing off
RIP to Joe Walker, probably America's greatest test pilot during this era. To die in a corporate, promotional photoshoot for General Electric is almost incomprehensible when compared to the achievements of this X-15 test pilot. The F-104 was a beast of an airplane and a favorite of the era's fighter jocks who wanted to fly faster and higher. An F-104 equipped with an auxiliary rocket in its tail almost killed Chuck Yeager during a test of high altitude capabilities and the German Airforce had a miserable experience with the Starfighter losing well over 300 planes to operational accidents. It had to be respected and flown the way it was designed to fly or it killed you faster than its Mach numbers. Luftwaffe officers called it "The Widowmaker".
True that, it was a widowmaker to more than just the Germans. Protocols were violated for the weekend promotional flight. He was not endorsed to be flying where he was. It's the complacency and overconfidence that will not forgive.
Wait first you say that the F-104 is a beast then say it sucked? Or maybe i'm just shot at reading
@@JSFGuy where you get the information? You just blaming him
Wow. You absolutely blew me away with your comment.
The reasons for the F-104's high loss rate in Luftwaffe hands are the miserable weather in Central Europe, and the fact that the Luftwaffe never flew any Mach-1 capable fighters before acquiring the F-104, having only flown Transonic fighters.
Bragging, "just wait till you see us fly, then you'll see something."
Sure did.
The ground.
I remember a saying "There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are "No " old bold pilots...
😦😁💀
It’s hilarious 😂😂😂
If nothing else the Valkyrie is a serious work of aviation art.
Two XB-70's were made. One still exists and is on display at the museum at Wright Patterson in Dayton. The air intakes are tall enough and wide enough to hold a small cocktail party. It's one of my favorite planes to see every time I go there. Btw, admission is free and there are 4 enormous hangars of aircraft.
Thanks, very scary video. I suspect the Tupolev was rushed into early flight to beat the Concorde and may not have been fully tested, the Concorde was much better looking.
Like a beautiful Swan in flight, especially looking at it face on !!
Both were awesome designs. Too bad they are not around today.
Watched Concorde taking off and the sight was amazing, just something about it that stood out.
@@dougaldouglas8842Concorde was a regular sight back in the 1970’s .. I live near Bristol where it was built. Just loved the sight of it and that sonic boom .
Not really
airplane + showoff = trouble
They are the key of a disaster
Unless you're not careful
The mediocre demonstration won the contract.
"wait til we fly, then you'll see something." Russian for "hold my beer."
What's Russian for "hold my internal organs, which are now splattered over half of Paris"?
The loss of the Valkyrie is incredibly sad and unfortunate . An incredible flying machine and probably my favorite aircraft of all time.
Take a trip to Dayton and go to the National Museum of the USAF. The other XB-70 is on display there. It will blow you away to see it in person. Admission is free and they have 4 hangars of aircraft and countless displays. Plan to spend some serious time there if you love aviation.
Yes definitely sad it got lost even worst part about it was this was the one that was going to be the speed model they made it so it had more tilt on the wings
@@btzimmer I live about an hour and a half from there, and I go every two or three years. It is one absolutely stunning aircraft.
HEY FLIGHT CHANNEL - you got the F-4 and the T-38 mixed up. Switch the captions.

On July 4th of 1976 I had the privilege of seeing the Concorde SST fly over on the Mall in Washington, DC as part of that day's
festivities. It was impressive.... this reminded me of it & that it happened exactly 48 years ago, today. I was 14yrs old. peace
It was over when the word “Soviet” was brought into the dialogue….
“Just wait and see us fly”. Yes, into terrain.
Being inside the cabin of a passenger jet going down must be crazy terrifying, but being in the front seat watching the ground come to meet you as you do anything you can to stop it, must be truly insane to experience.
I imagine that it would not seem real as it unfolds.
Ironic that the Tu-144 and Concorde both essentially received their death blows on French soil.
At least the Concorde had a long service life, despite the activists in the states trying to ban it from every US airport.
Wow, I’ve read many accounts of the Valkyrie crash and this is the first time I’ve heard about the B-58. Makes sense that Walker might lose position a little while searching for the bomber.
You mixed up the captions for the F-4 and T-38, and it might have been helpful to note that the photoshoot was for a commercial for the manufacturer who made the engines for all the aircraft in the formation. But it’s a great video anyway.
He's no longer the owner
Honestly… This is the most scariest thing that could happen in the air. Everyone was just expecting a normal race.. I just can’t believe all the lives that were lost on those planes. RIP everyone❤
There's no race
A race? wdym
There's scarier things in the air.
@@brucelee4996 I have scarier stuff in my closet .... hmmmmmmmm!
“Most scariest?”
OMFG. Try again, Sunshine.
It's hard to believe the Concorde has already been out of service for 21 years. I only got to see one take off once, at Dulles in 1994. Such a beautiful thoroughbred of an aircraft. A work of art. I hope I get to see Boom's Overture maiden flight in Greensboro whenever that day will be.
The best highest quality sim re-creations of real incidents and accidents, along with Green Dot Aviation.
Just found this channel. Very informative, educational and brilliantly portrayed! That is a lot of work researching and making this video. I am very impressed. Thank you!
The Tupolev Concordeski. Failed to depart for 5 of its first 6 scheduled flights. Eventually became the fastest freight hauler ever - when it could be convinced to fly.
That damn Concorde crew and their whole, “let’s do a flight demo that doesn’t get us killed” attitude. Damn them.
It's not Concord
It is Tu-144 aka the "Concordski" that disintegrated in middair, not the Concorde
@@SkyW0lf_ yes
@@SkyW0lf_ he's referring to the more restrained flight demo that the Concorde crew gave before the Tu-144...
That's us Brits ! ! ! "Now steady on, chaps !"🤣🤣🤣
Joseph Walker was a close friend of Neil Armstrong. Both were test pilots for the X-15.
Watching this on my lunch break at work. Sad and scary stuff.
I heard about the Tu-144's crash and am glad to see a video on it.
Me too.

Although the XB-70, or its passenger plane derivative, never came to fruition, the aerodynamics pioneering of N.A.A. lives on in the future supersonic passenger plane from Hermeus in the form of the Halcyon.
While listing the pilot of the T-38 the camara is on the F-4. When the camara transitions to the T-38 the pilot of the F-4 is listed. Juz say'n.
I never saw this so thanks for showing it again
You're probably new here
I've seen this exact viseo on this channel at least 5 times within a year
I'm no pilot. As a matter of fact, I've only flown once when I was a small child and it was in a Piper Cub. Nevertheless, I've loved aircraft my whole life and own many different books on military and civilian aircraft. I've watched many videos as well. So, forgive me if I sound a little ignorant. What I've noticed, in this vid and many others, is that the bigger the aircraft, recovering from a stall gets exponentially more difficult. True? RIP to all who have paid the ultimate price in "writing" the story of aviation and space travel. Not to sound crass, but going from "first flight" to the surface of the Moon in less than 75yrs is pretty damn impressive.
you messed up the T-38 and the F-4 with the wrong planes being captioned
Because he's not making it
As I recall the XB-70 photoshoot was arranged for GE, which made the engines for all the aircraft in the flight.
Yes
My father was a design engineer on the program. He told us about the crash and I specifically heard that the GE photographer in the F-104 wanted to get close up pictures of the afterburner and kept prodding the pilot to approach closer, to which, the other pilots kept telling them to back off and stay away from the wake stream off the wing tips. Their attempt was to do a slow crossing sweep behind and above the engines for picture purposes. Never hear anything about striking a wing or loosing visual contact with the b-58.
Can confirm, she is a beautiful plane. I get to see her whenever I want. I live near the museum where she rests.
never heard of that 1st crash with frank sinatras plane filming 📹
I was hiking in the mountains just south of the crash site of the XB-70 that morning. I have pictures of the very large/tall colum of black smoke rising from that crash site.
When Sinatra was performing in Las Vegas he sent the Lear to Palm Springs to pickup his mom and bring her to the show. On departure the pilots turned the wrong way comming out of Palm Springs and flew into the side of Mt San Gorgonio. They actually turned the wrong on the departure SID and turned NW and not SE, thus creating a smoking hole in the ground.
In my opinion the XB-70 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. I was 14 when this accident happened and I thought, what a waste of good men and aircraft.
Sad at the loss of life due to these accidents. May the souls of the American and Russian pilots rest in peace.
Great video
No
I use to see the concord every year at liverpool grand national horse race ..it use to fly around liverpool very low.
Got your super-titles crossed on the T-38 and F-4.
10:15 Nice video, but the animation shows Le Bourget Airport with the new control tower that was built only 20 years later, in 1993. The old tower (15 meters high) is located in the upper part of the terminal building. The new tower (30 meters) is located in the northern part of the airport.
What flight sim is he using?
6:14 Why is a NASA ‘Chase Plane’ armed with Sidewinder Missiles?

Absolutely! When talking about the T-38 he was showing the F4, and vice-versa.
nice video
Another reason for the f-104s high loss rate was so slender was pushing itself around and then also you had to be careful because it would all eject from the top or it might eject from the bottom when you punched out
The XB-70's wingtips should have been in the mid down position in this depiction.
Nice videostory
I prefer just commercial aviation
Then you should only watch videos that pertain to commercial aviation.
The 2nd case did concern commercial aviation
I wish these weren’t so animated so to speak. I like the ones that do recreations better
What
These replays only show how safe aviation is. There are no new crashes and that’s a good thing.
There are still very many crashes to talk about. He's only made about 10% of aviation accidents that EVER happenned.
"Some speculate"? You mean told the truth.
There's one other thing I like to point out the HP 70 and the X-15 we're both made by North American Aviation and they were both done without computers and then you have the SR-71 which is built around the same time and North American also built the shuttle with 60 technology going into the 70s so you're telling me with all the material technology advancements we've had since 1970 to now we haven't built something faster
Pride commeth before the fall
why does the graphics on your terrain look so muddy?
Once again, AS ALWAYS, the computer crashed the plane.
Awww… that’s so sad
😂 Commie really showed us something. 😂
4:35 You got the clips for the F-4 and T-38 backwards. Maybe fix and re-upload?
Yes
Way starts at Edale in the Peak District.
Can you make a video Vietjet air flight 356 pls?
You got your planes mixed up there....
You have the F4 & the T38 photos switched and in the wrong order
No, the USAF did not plan that photo flight, instead it was put together by GE Aircraft Engines, to showcase the five different aircraft powered by GE engines, and they didn't notify the air force before conducting that flight, which saw the destruction of Joe Walker's F-104N, and the loss of XB-70 AV-2.
Yeah
Never even knew the U.S. plane existed before, excuse my spelling. RIP All Pilot's.
And thus future supersonic flight development was arrested.
Sadly, this world just was not ready for Concorde.
You mixed up the F-4 and the T-38.
04:45 ... the captions showing the types of jets and their pilots is backward. You show the Phantom F-4B as the T-38a and then the T-38a you list as a Phantom F-4B.
Hey can you do trans air flight 671
Congrats to Koslov. We all def saw something alright. 🤦♂

BECAUSE of a *(&%#&$% DOLLAR, America couldn't have the SST! And the F-104-get it TO the far left of the formation I KNEW THAT in the 60's(Dad flew the "U" designated aircraft).

The 50s and 60s were a truly incredible era for aviation.

The double edged sword means bad logic.
It's funny that when you copied information from another YT XB-70 crash video that you copied their mistake.
No reason for them to flying so close!
It's for promotional image
The Valkyrie was a beautiful aircraft and it was a pity that it was made superfluous by the Soviets S.A.M system, however I was wondering why they couldn’t have used the Valkyrie at high speed to approach the target area and then drop to low level to infiltrate the enemy airspace and then either employ a “lob toss” release of its ordinance whilst climbing back to altitude and getting out of the area at the predicted Mach 3 ?, although, as with the B-52 crews the Valkyrie would probably be on a one way mission, but they might have been able to get further away before being hit by the blast from their weapon or running out of fuel, maybe even making it to friendly territory before they had to eject/abandon the aircraft.
R.I.P the two pilots who died in this tragic accident, loosing their lives in combat is one thing but to die in the way they did is very sad indeed. Per Ardua Ad Astra.
Embarrassing!
This isn’t an airport. There no need to announce your departure.
I still say something stinks here the XB-70 was a Mach 3 plus bomber and they were worried about Sam's taking it out yet we had the SR-71 and that was no problem the Sams didn't worry them I mean it's the same math for both planes so something's not adding up here
Altitude, or service ceiling.

This video has one factual error amid generally good analysis. There was no French Mirage in the vicinity. That was a story concoted by the Soviet government to excuse the colossal stupidity of the Charger's pilots.
Got the two planes on the left mixed up!
As for the Concorde and Tupolev facng off against each other. WTH! These are designed as airliners not fighters or acrobatic planes. If I am an airline executive I am not interested in extreme maneuvers that are going to make passengers sick. Sorry to say but the Russian pilot paid the price for his ill advised showmanship.
