    Love that traditional style of Sammi knife and sheath .

      Yes me too, very unique to this area. Many of them are extremely ornate with lots of scrimshaw patterns. I suppose in the old days it was a good thing to do in the dark winter to scratch patterns into the sheath of your knife.
      Thanks for watching mate.

      Thanks Nicole, I think this video was more about the Saami than the knife really but kind of more important to understand about the people than the knife.
      Thanks for watching.

    Yakut people of Siberia are reindeer herders . Although not herders, the Inuit of Canada/US and the Ainu people on the northern Islands of Japan are very similar ! Grizz 🐻

      @KuukkeliBushcraft  3 года назад +2

      Similar environment means similar solutions to the same problems. The Inuit always fascinate me. Their kayaks, their harpoon and all of the cool stuff made from skin and bone. Now that is a harsh environment to sustain human life.
      Thanks for watching Grizz

    Mate that is awesome with the fiskars sheath, I did not know they had them. Man I really like that, wonder if I can find them online hmmm. That antler sheath is amazing also, so very cool and unique!! Interesting history on the Saami, I think I remember you talking about em before a bit(maybe that clip of you talking you pasted in there?). Very cool stuff Tim!

      Oh you mean Fiskars knives not the Saami ones. Don't bother mate, modern fiskars knives are junk. The old ones were just puukos the same as most other Finnish manufacturers. They make OK kitchen knives though. That sheath is about as old as me😂. I was just telling Rod, I had the box of ancient knives out because the Saami knife was in there and I had just taken a photo. The Fiskars was just handy, there were knives all over the table 😂. Most of those knives were 60s - 80s.

      @@KuukkeliBushcraft Thanbk you for letting me know Tim! I noticed last night that is all they are selling is kitchen knives on their page lol, I did like that old fiskars leather sheath though. Thats some knives mate goodness!! The Saami antler one was really cool though

    Norwegian sami knives typically have no liner inside the sheath. They did it to simplify the production of tourist quality knives. Really old Norwegian sami knives had wood or bone/horn inserts. Mass production has sacrificed quality. Leaf spring steel became 1095 carbon steel from solingen Germany, then the blade manufacturing was moved back to norway, now mass produced by Brusletto in southern Norway. Probably still not made by sami people.

    It appears that your sheath is untreated. If that is the case you can soak it in water and let it dry. It should shrink a bit and give you better retention. If desired, once dry you can then oil or otherwise treat the leather with a leather preservative. God bless, and thanks for the video👍

    • @KuukkeliBushcraft
      @KuukkeliBushcraft  Год назад

      Thanks Gary, I guess I will already have waxed it, I normally do with these old knives. As for wet forming it, I don't really need the retention to be perfect on this one. I am not likely to be taking it into the forest, I have plenty of other knives for that.
      Thanks for the suggestion though.
