      This was just a fun project afterall. Of course, peltier modules are not that efficient in exchanging the heat. Although the compressor may need a maintenance like the refrigerant, oil or the filter check after some time.

    Better to just use a 24volt fridge compressor. They consume about 45watts and can reach freezing temperatures. More practical. Peltiers are more effective at generating high heat than at cooling

      With 45 watt compressor, you can cool down 10 liter small fridge. Not 2000 liter car!
      Otherwise, car manufacturer could use that compressor and we would be able to cool down the car for 10 hours only with 45 amp 12 volts car battery.

      ​@@tr9036the HVAC systems in modern cars are insanely over speced. A 45 watt compressor would be more than enough to cool the inside of a car to the dew point, removing the humidity from the air and causing a greater cooling effect. Plus it'd last about 2000 times longer than those tecs, that will start dying at around 30 hours.

      @@Shukodoshi If there is no sun, if car has tripple wall glass and spaceship spec insulation, you might be right. Otherwise, you are not.
      My car"s ac blows 10-12 degree celcious air from the vents in full power and even though it is barely enough to cool down in very hot climate.
      Think about that, small office fridges has 90 watt ac compressors and when you plug it in, it takes 1-2 hours to get it cool down the inside of the fridge. Consider that fridge has perfect insulation walls, No direct sun light, no glass, no heat source inside like humanbeing!
      To cool down a car, you need 3000-4000 btu cooling power since there is almost no insulation, constant temperature source (sunlight, humans in the car)
      300 watt electric compressor maybe sufficient for a small car.

      Just to give you an idea of how insane the amount of heat is inside a vehicle in the sun in hot weather, hear this personal experience- I tried to cool just the front two seat area of a step van one time, using a generator and a rooftop RV air conditioner. I bought the rooftop ac brand new, and I think it was 12,000 or 16,000 BTU's. It blew really cold air, but when the sun was shining and it was hot, it was not nearly enough to cool down the cab. It felt hotter having the ac on with the doors closed than it did with the ac off and the doors open. And I closed off every place where hot air could be leaking in, but it didn't matter. The front cab was airtight, but it didn't matter, because the heat from the sun and the hot air outside were just way too much, and the aluminum body was also a very poor insulator. So I bought a huge 20,000 btu wall unit ac and put it on the roof, and it was actually able to cool the cab down just a little bit and make it comfortable, but still not like really refreshingly cool. And the generator could barely run it most of the time, so I just took it out and dealt with the heat from that point on. Cars have better insulation than an aluminum step van, but it isn't that much better with all the windows and how thin the roof panel is and how hot everything gets just from sitting in the sun. So you need at least 18,000-24,000 BTU's just to get a car comfortable enough to not sweat in within 5 minutes after baking in the sun in a hot parking lot for a couple of hours.

    ha ha ha ha, what a power consuption. 36 Peltiers multiply with 6Amp = 2800 Watts or Approx 3KW of power means brand new engine will need to be replaced after 2 months

    Some people might think the filter is "over the top". Fan and radiator longevity are crucial.

    make a car AC using universal blower-evaporator unit, it's already have everything from blower, case, expansion valve and thermostat. It only needs piping, compressor and condensor.
    But, instead of going with car air-conditioning compressor, go with a 1/2 hp mini split compressor and use psw inverter to run it. that way i think you'll get better performance

      Actually use the heat pump from a salvaged Tesla, its already designed for running on low power and doesn't need to be actuated the way a traditional car AC system does.

Sounds like a good idea, there's almost no options between 15amp window ac units and expensive 12v camper AC units. I was curious about off grid AC but there's very little low power low cost options.

    I agree with your statement at video end. It is hard to compete with the efficiency and power of conventional heat pump system. I have purchased the 8-bank TEC cooler module from Amazon for the personal cooler suit. 4L of solid ice does not last long in 34C with 108kg 2m tall working man, ~3.9hrs. With hope that the 8-bank TEC module can make light the backpack to carry a Lithium battery and maybe less than 1L of circulating water.

      @@keirthomas2491 lol, i did this about a decade ago... had big ideas... ha. im no good at selling anything. or getting funds.
      first it was a dozen grip heaters glued to the tank on top of PU foam... brilliant... a hard lesson on current draw and resistances? destroyed a wiring harness... like speakers, series AND parallel matters...
      fixed that... peltiers, pumps, PC radiators, a grid of water pipes dangled over the seat... comfiest ride in mid summer i ever had! mmm... yes, it did cool... barely. and pulling 15A... this is the issue, not many bikes can generate more than 150-200W...
      found water cooled pillow slips... AU$29 from usa... 139 shipping. local supplier? $900! (paragon medical, hypothermia blankets, iirc...)
      can get blankets, but i wanted the little pillow slip come seat cover... havent found anything similar.
      so there went that idea... TEC is NOT the way to go.
      i do have a waterblock thats bulged from getting them to about minus 50C with no antifreeze? theyre fun to play with...
      and, this was still a decade ago... they were developing 150W compressor refrigeration units about the size of a coke can for military gear... minus the radiators.
      the human body is, on average... "200W". you do need a fair bit of cooling power... a LOT actually...
      seriously, i would be more impressed by a new bike model if it had a heat pump on the seats and bars than any of the features i do see... not just warm, but cool as well...

    Why use liquid to transfer heat?
    Replace the headliner with the Peltier blocks, so it cools the interior from the top down & there is air flow over the other side (the roof).

    Compressor AC efficiency 200-400%. Peltier cells efficiency 40-70% on cold and 100-150% on heating. This is with a good design.

    Great idea except for a couple of problems and that is BTU capacity and efficiency. [A BTU is the energy required to heat or cool cubic foot 1degree] Peltier coolers are a last resort cooling because they are sooo inefficient. The device created may cool a small ice chest but certainly not a car. You would have to mount a 300-amp alternator to the engine, run it at its max and have more than a 100 of his devices connected to it.

    You should ALWAYS pull the Teflon tape to a thread, use it to pack the thread spaces and THEN wind the wider tape on top…Be Blessed.

    Good work but keep in mind, TEP are very inefficient when it comes to power to work ratio.Nothing beats a good old compressor cooling system. I would hunt for a 200 watt compressor and make an ac from it, it should beat this peltier experiment.

    You should have put a 1/2” space in the middle for a 3rd bolt so the outter boxes don’t just flex. Regardless, thermoelectric coolers have less temperature variation than a regular phase change system (like a normal AC) and use more power. IE there is a reason AC systems are dominant for large temperature charges. Even electric car still use AC systems driven by an electric motor instead of the engine. Most car AC will give you 20 degree C difference instead of the 7 you got there. For the US, he went from 80F to 68F, while a normal car AC in 80f ambient should result in 40F output at the vents, minimum.

    Use old refrigirator pump make copper coils and fan blow into them and power inverter 12v to 220v. At 400w use you will get more than kilowatt cooling power. Peltier have small efficiency and from power used you get an fraction of cooling power

    Wouldn’t be a bit easier, and possibly achieving the same result if you would have used 6 240mm cooling blocks? I was thinking about this right after watching your video. I think it would simplify much more your project and achieve similar temps.

    Edit: Ok, Sorry, Now later I realised by other posts you used 24(!) TECs! That does change the picture slightly, so my estimates where based on 12 TECs, arranged as 6 pairs of 2 in series. Efficiency will be higher with 24, but I don't think it changes everything radically, anyway I should stop speculating without adding 12 more TECs and check the datasheets how it impacts calculations. Ok, now follows my flawed original analysis / post:
    uuuuuh... you know you can calculate an estimate of the cooling power before starting the project?
    You use ALOT of power, but the cooling power is in how many watts it can continuously transfer (from cold to hot side) while maintaining the hot side temp at a reasonable temperature.
    So, I generously in your favor first estimated a hot-side of atleast 50C ...but considering the somewhat "low" power usage it's probably an indicator of quite higher, maybe like 65C TEC hot side. So, pulling 600W, at best pumping 250 to 270 W or so.
    Uh-Oh! Naughty rascal! I caught you! You did a little "bait and switch" with the "after 15 minutes" video clip showing 20.4C. That 15 min was a blatant lie, it was probably the next day after a nights cooling. Just check the change in shadows, what direction they move in? Time is clearly at an earlier time of day than first video shot.
    Besides, to cool a car that quickly, 10C in 15 minutes, would require a compressor with probably 3000W capacity.
    There are no free lunches with TEC's, they are horrible devices for larger heat loads requiring >100W pumping capacity.
    Good effort anyway, Looks really cool tho.

    Need to get rid of the heat generated from the peltiers and separate as much as possible from the cool side.
    Still horribly inefficient, but may be a life saver with enough solar panels to drive it and a small insulated box to escape to!
    Transferring the compressor and tubes from a refrigerator would be cheaper and more efficient too.

    Awesome job well done but i build an ac with peltiers but its not very efficient i suggest use compressor system which is more effective and consume less power and generate better cooling

    Aus meiner Klimaanlage kommt 12 Grad kalte Luft um den Innenraum gerade so zu kühlen, mit 20 Grad dauert es Ewigkeiten. Allein die Sonnenstrahlung durch die Scheiben schreibt das Steuergerät 3000W Sonneneinstrahlung gemessen durch den Sensor. Eine Kfz Klima hat 28000Btu Leistung!

      Actually, it will increase fuel consumption a lot. 600 watt/ 12 volts = 50 amper.
      Alternator can not catch it and eventually your battery will be empty. Even while driving the car.

      @tr9036 im aware, but sometimes engineering for the sake of it is fun, even if its not completely practical, they can still drop wattage and use it, though yes a 12v refridgerant based syatem would be vastly more efficent. This is fun and interesting to just watch someone else's creative process. Less destination, more journey.

    Hello, your project is very nice. However, I think that systems made with Peltier are very low in cost and efficiency. Instead, it would be more efficient to choose refrigerator-type cooling with a 12v aquarium compressor and copper pipe.

    at 600w youre better off installing the guts of small house air conditioner or a heatpump of some sort. they would use less power by being more efficient at both power usage and the amount of heat they could pull out of the cabin. you could easily cut power usage down to 200-300 watts when running full power. even a cheap portable aircon running off an inverter would only use about 400w peak and they are horribly inefficient. its a "cool" idea though, the install was very neatly done

      Prety sure that was 600 watts at 24 volts (maybe12?), what you are describing sounds like a portable house AC, which runs at 120vac.

      I've never seen an ac that pulls less than 1500w (maybe 1300), plus the huge startup draw. Maybe some really expensive camper AC units, but I think most of those are 1200watts.

    just why??? You know from the get go that the devices use about 6 Amps each, you have 12 of those and with that wiring, running a little under current there. 600watts!!!!, if this is a petrol powered vehicle, you would most likely run 12V, and that 600 watts drills down to 50 AMPS!!!! constant, that is crazy and the pull down on the alternator would be the same as a small sized compressor. A 24V+ A/C compressor uses just as much current thus it would not be such a great idea either for this application. Also, it's great with the vehicle standing, but the holes in that vehicle would let every little bit of heat come right back in, also it is not insulated enough. I do not understand why people would want to try these stupid experiments when the theory already screams "STUPID". It is such a waste of money, time and effort where you could have invested it into something much more productive.

    cool build, however efficency of a peltier-system is around 5% so you need humongous power to get any useful coolingpowerout of it..

      If you use soft power ramp up and ramp down it will lessen the mechanical stress greatly. Amount of cycles impacts alot. With only a few soft cycles per day it could last way over 200'000hrs according to some datasheets I've gleened at. I would also surmise that using it at really high DeltaT will also present as a constant stress on the several hundreds of internal solder joints.

      For a car, the motor should be always running since the alternator is supposed to power the A/C and not the battery actually, unless you have an external source.

    Cool that you realised this built, I was thinking of a thermoelectric AC but came to the conclusion that it will not be strong enough. First thermoelectric (peltier) generates far more heat than it takes out of the cooling medium. So its more of a outdoor heater... and with water there is no phase change but only the temperature difference of the water. The phase change carries much more energy though. gas->liquid->gas
    The problem with water is that this happens at 100C so not really fits for cooling. You can use the solid-> liquid phasechange by manually putting a bucket of icecubes into the car and blow a fan on it.

      i already tried those ice bucket and blower.. i did use a radiator to harness the low temperature and it's cold for 5mins and all ice is melted..
      yes peltier is inefficient for cooling, but for those who are curious for what if.. then there it is 😁

    So that is then 36v 24A (864w) per XT60
    So need 36v 48A or 72v 24A power supply
    But your running it on 12v and have relays to switch 2s from/to 2p mode ?
    Basically running it at 1/3 power or 1/6 power ?
    If I understood it correctly 🤔
    So sacrifice power to efficiency
    If I remember correctly at full power those modules are like 5% efficient at full power
    But what is the efficiency at 1/3 or 1/6 power?

      Peltiers are more efficient at around 50% power so you can get the same cooling using more of them at lower voltage.

    I would think that you could place a bucket full of Ice Cubes under your hood. Have a hole in the Bucket with a 12V Computer Fan blowing through - onto the ice. Then take two plastic flexible hoses (output from the ice-filled Bucket) inside the car. A hole in the bottom of the bucket would drain off water. Just fill with ice when your journey begins - from your Refrigerator. I am sure that this would give you 30 minutes of cooling whilst driving. Somebody should make a video of this, because Peltiers just do not work efficiently in that application. Alternatively, make a cheap Evaporative Cooler System. that draws only 500mA. I did admire the work and effort involved in the making of this video. Greetings from Australia.

    its a bit expensive but how about replacing your aluminum water blocks with copper. it should increase thermal conductivity. also why not use distilled water instead of coolant?. i mean you risk boiling or freezing water. but thats why you have heat sinks and giant fans.

    24 cells peltier 12706 = 144 ampere. 13.5 volt x 144 = 1944 watt. The engine lose 3 HP power if the alternator survivor at 144 Ampere

    - High-end models: up to 60% efficient (COP: 6-8)
    Peltier Cell:
    - Typical efficiency: 2-5% (COP: 1-3)
    - High-end models: up to 10% efficient (COP: 4-5)
    Key differences:
    - AC compressors are 4-8 times more efficient than Peltier cells
    - AC compressors can achieve higher cooling capacities
    COP (Coefficient of Performance) measures the ratio of heat transferred to electrical energy consumed. Higher COP values indicate better efficiency

    It makes no sense to use Peltier modules in a car air-conditioner because their efficiency is very low compared to a compressor and in a car electrical power is generated with an alternator and further loss of efficiency in the conversion from mechanical to electrical power.

    Cool (pun intended) demonstration of your skil in building.something. Hopeless at AC power vs a common hermetic system but aside from the circulation pump there are no moving parts.

    This is a lot of work for an extremely inefficient system. Pulling 600 watts and only getting just under 70 degrees F. Maybe there is no humidity where you are but good luck.

    might be more efficient to directly cool water with the peltier devices then run the cool water directly through a radiator with a fan... this works on the time and size basis (bigger time, smaller size) compared to cooling the entire cabin with the air from a peltier...       Peltier cannot be powered by heat, only by electricity.

      @@eriton6806 The voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft have been running electronics off their thermoelectric generators for 47 years now. The radioactive heat source is the only thing slowing down, so you can actually power electronics just by the waste heat from the engine, and quite successfully. It's much easier than designing a stirling engine or a turbine.

I don't know if OP knows what efficiency TEGs operate inside but it will produce electrical power and offset the radiator size and active cooling power that would have been required to reject the extra heat had it not been converted to electricity. So the total power savings can exceed the efficiency of the TEG alone.

    Janky, especially the battery placement below the driver's seat.. LiPos are not that stable in this situation and that is the worst place for a runaway battery.
