Still, the learning curve needed for me to accurately interpret their hissing is steeper than my organs and extremities could afford. I prefer to keep my blood inside my body. I’m old fashioned that way.
Interesting. I wondered about that, because Luna (that glamorous black leopard who lives in Siberia?) hisses quite alot and it doesn't seem equivalent to hissing from a house cat. Her parents refer to it as grumbling, which really does seem to fit the situation. With house cats it's much more serious. Now I'll have to find some caracal videos so that I can decode this behavior better.
I agree when you have owned vicious cats you learn their hisses very quick I had a 35# Siamese cat very vicious my family learned not to f*ck with my cat love the hell out of me though
You put it perfectly. It's a status symbol. People get these cats for social media, and similar cats closely related to wild cats or wild cats themselves. One of my pet cats, a more common variety of housecat, was rejected by several families because of a few slight imperfections caused by a fire. Otherwise healthy. They clearly wanted a 'perfect' cat for the instagrams. I am thankful because I was able to get this loving kitty but those people make me sick.
Not everyone tho. Many get them from zoos or wild as they are sick and cant go back. But its REALLY special cases and new owners are usually already professionals.
Well not all of us are wanting one of these beautiful babies for social media. I myself would LOVE a cheetah, Savannah, or Caracal simply because I love their vibe and I'm also partial to fairly large predators. Lol
Caracal hissing isn't always a thing of aggression. While in this vid it definitely is in some of those vids with adults, Caracals can't meow or anything like that. They literally growl and hiss at EVERYTHING, even as a happy sound.

Fun fact: Caracal cats cannot meow like normal cats. They're meows sound like hisses. You'll know if they're actually hissing because their ears go down.

Communication, yes, but it's an aggressive behavior for sure. Especially when they charge like that or handling food. We had A few litters and a stray. You learn quick what is aggression and play, defending territory.

That particular caracal (Pumba) is known to be highly aggressive even by caracal standards. There are videos on youtube of far less aggressive caracals

I was born where caracal, leopards, lion, and cheetah roam. All re amazing animals. All are wild. None can be truly tamed in the way that dogs and cats can. None belong in some rich wanker's house as a 'status symbol'. These same rich people need to walk through the African bush on foot to see what life in the wild is really like. Then they would have a proper appreciation for the elusive caracal.

Domestic cats werent always domestic, so in a few hundred years these creatures could be huge babies, bringing neighborhood children back as presents.
