Chris, another great video! Can you test the transistors on the high voltage section of a WPC DMD controller board the same way? I did something stupid on my WCS94 and now I have no display and the f112 is blowing on the power driver board after it locks on one of the solenoids. I think I need to just bring you my boards. I live about 25 minutes from you.

Happy to take care of them if you'd like.
You can diode test the TO-92 parts. They test like normal even in circuit. The MJE15030 and MJE05031 don't test quite the same way in circuit. They will measure normal voltage drop across a silicon diode one way, and about .160 the other way, IIRC. I haven't measured those in a while since I'm generally replacing them anyway.

What is a decent Soldering iron you would recommend ?

      Qualities I look for:
      o rapid heating
      o variety of tips available
      o quick change tips
I started with Weller WESD51. A lot of tips were available and it was a tank, but it took minutes to heat up. Weller makes better irons these days but I don't have the model number.
I use JBC irons these days. They heat up in 6 seconds. Still a lot of tips available. Quick tip change method. JBC 2100 is the model number IIRC.
I'm sure there are several others with the same qualities.

Can you do this test on a mounted board (with the power off) ? Or should one disconnect the power supply (or in general, all the cables going from/to the ppb)? Thank you!

Better to disconnect the board thereby eliminating the possibility of “sneak circuits”.

@@ChrisHiblerPinball Thank you! I just blew an F5 (blows on boot) with a JPDE trex looping up/down in diagnostics. Just did a quick test and Q5 Q4 Q3 all seem bad, but I guess I'll have to remove the board to be sure then! Thank you again for the tips! Love your channel!
