I think, you overlooked the right explanation. The plastic piece at the chain guide had fallen off. This means that the timing chain could run in a more direct line from the cam sprocket to the crank sprocket. The result of that is, that the timing is off - the camshaft is running a few degrees late of the intendend position. It means premature injection since the injection timing is normally comtrolled by the cam sensor, but when the ECU detects, the timing is off, it will use the crankshaft sensor, and this leads to premature injection. Premature injection means that the combustion reaches a very high pressure before the piston is at TDC - the piston is forced to continue to TDC and the pressure raises even higher. This emormous force will break the oil film at the big ends, at they will have metal-to-metal-contact. This is a pretty common fail on this engine type - the solution is allways to renew not only the timing chain, but also the chain guides and the sprockets. On a normal maintenanced engine the chain and guides will last around 250.000 km. All in all a very fine and economical engine with no more fails than similar engines, but premature injection will kill all diesel engines. Best regards Jarl Paulsen, Denmark
You are a bloody good mechanic. Steves is lucky to have you. A lot of modern so called mechanics are just fitters and don't have a clue what to do if what the computer says doesn't work 😊👍👌
Hi Alan your a genuine guy and is a good mechanic i was very shocked to see 👀 that you were using a standard socket with a airgun which is very dangerous as the socket can explode and cut your face and lose your eye sight please be careful regards Tony
Yeh right it’s a Vauxhall issue. It’s not and for the record, this engine is a joint venture between Fiat Power Train (FPT) and General Motors (GM). What GM actually contributed is not clear but in essence this is a Fiat engine built by Fiat. Like many of these modern over complicated engines with equipment attached for emissions, the likelihood of these engines going wrong is increased. Add this to the fact that manufacturers keep telling buyers that they don’t need to service these for long periods and you have a perfect storm. These modern diesel engines need lots of attention including very regular oil changes. This is how it is these days. The only blame you can put on Vauxhall is that GM has not invested into engine development as much as they should have done over the years. That said, sharing engines amongst other car manufacturers is now very common. How do you know what the maintenance regime was or how the van was driven or if the timing chan was correctly installed or what level of oil has been maintained or for that matter, what make of timing chain was fitted, you don’t. Worth noting is the sump on the Euro 5 models only holds 3.2 lts of oil😮This means less oil to collect the carbon. Something that was rectified on the euro 6 engine. Heading into a full diagnostic with an anti-Vauxhall attitude doesn’t allow for an honest and impartial conclusion. There is nothing wrong with this engine other the added emission technology. If maintained properly it’s just fine. If there was a crown to be offered to the worst engine of modern days, it goes to Ford with the eco boost 3 cylinder engine, hands down
First thoughts were old oil, not enough oil changes etc But 2nd thoughts were the engine has been run for a prolonged time on very low oil or even no oil. I'm sure that engine would have been making some awful noises long before it failed!⚠️😯 Edit- nice xk jag, my dream car.

Great video! Strange thing right off the bat, my Corsa D has the same engine but the turbo is hidden away so the glow plugs are easily accessible when you open the bonnet. I watched all your vlog, did you actually remove the oil filter from the housing? Fallen apart and clogged up could of been reason the engine starved itself of oil.
It’s generally a well built engine but the timing chain is adequate for 100K miles max. It’s such a shame they did not fit a twin row chain. At least the valves are vertical and the rockers are sacrificial so it can be repaired.

It’s a well proven engine with some very solid engineering. The only weakness is the weak cam chain. It’s a shame Fiat did not stay with their well proven cam belt.
On the plus side. Cam chain breaking almost never wrecks the engine or the valves. It will need new rockers, lifters, cam chain kit and gasket set That’s it.
Looking at the state of the sump etc I'd say this has been run on the same oil for too long or it has seen dpf issues and been chucking diesel and shite into the sump. Thats what's caused the issue in my opinion.

A few years ago I bought a 306 DT 3dr sport.. i forgot to check the oil level... My brother drove it home and said it was a bit noisy, he checked the oil level and it was well below minimum on the dipstick... But i filled it up quick with some new oil and it did another 40k so 145k when i sold it it was still OK..so i got away with it just!
I recon it’s been ran dry of oil - or burnt it away , lots of early mk7 transits ran dry of oil in the early days until owners leant to top them up. Haha the first rule when there’s an issue - change the oil
So did you find out what the broken chunks of metal in the sump were off because that was a big flat piece of metal. A mate of mine bought an Jag XKR from the dealer where he worked as a Mechanic there and it spent more time in their workshop for head gasket failures under Warranty than he did have driving it and they wouldn't let him do the work himself in the end he took the dealership to Court over it.
11:15 chalk pen says "new chain **/11/20"... Wonder if there's something they did then... Edit, also noticed at the beginning there was a torn hose next to the turbo. Probably happened during removal as no mention of no coolant but that'd do it too lol
Modern engines simply cannot tolerate as much abuse, lack of servicing or skimping on oil changes compared to those of days gone by. Today's engines don't wear out after 100,000 miles, instead they self-destruct if not maintained properly. As emissions laws have tightened over the years, the requirements and demands placed on the oil have also changed, and fuel is much better quality these days too, but the trend is to downsize and offset the reduced power output by implementing variable valve timing, adding a turbocharger or twin turbochargers. But then, engines are suffocated by having to add necessary items such as EGR valves, catalysts, particulate filters and then they have to attach an untold amount of sensors and probes up every orifice. If the attitudes of the general public towards mechanical sympathy and vehicle maintenance does not change and modernise, it's no wonder engines are failing in a catastrophic way.

hi, the abs is working with various other systems in your vehicle, ...generally speaking, when usually, it is one of the front abs wires that is faulty it will bring up 3 or 4 lights on your dash...this can also affect your engine so best to get the abs ecu scanned for codes and have the faulty sensor replaced as it will only get worse otherwise
Arnt the oil pickup seals stiffen up on these vauxhall engines where oil would drop back into sump and from cold start engine would be oil starved overtime it seizes engine...

Yea. When he couldn’t get the timing cover off, what most mechanics do is wind the studs out, the you can take the cover off to do the chain. It’s a bodge though, bits of sealant fall into the sump.

We had some Fiat Doblo vans on lease hire at work for a while, they were the worst van I have ever seen. They went back and company never used Fiat again.
The failing chain is the result of a weak chain, fitted for low friction and overall immisions and fuel economy. What kills these is short journeys with too many stop starts and long oil changes. Simple as that. There is nothing wrong with this engine, it's a user issue not been told they have to use and maintain this is a particular way due to added nonsence over immisions

Allen could it be that van has had the wrong grade of oil cheap engine oil used to save money in its service and thats why big end shalks have worn out so badely and has it got high milage by the way first class video again mate love it
Phil in stoke
yeah i sure it has not be maintained probably from new and has been dying for years🤣, cheers phillip
I suspect the chain was replaced to fix the rattle but problem elsewhere
Same as bipper, they develop a death rattle and the timing chain slips.
Loving the cinematics Alan! 😉😁
I recon it’s been ran dry of oil - or burnt it away , lots of early mk7 transits ran dry of oil in the early days until owners leant to top them up. Haha the first rule when there’s an issue - change the oil
Great point!
Good question. What where the big chunks???
they were parts of one of the thrust washers holding the crankshaft central lol
@@alan4x 😁🧐🙄 how thick was the washer? Why would it have broken into pieces. Or was it in two pieces already???
If the attitudes of the general public towards mechanical sympathy and vehicle maintenance does not change and modernise, it's no wonder engines are failing in a catastrophic way.
thanks, very interesting and totally correct
Nice long video Alan loved it cheers mate.
thanks charles
The problem here is that Vauxhall drivers use the Fuel filler as a toilet facility on the road
Looks like the pick up had debris from the chain guide which dropped off into the sump which you did find?
Makes a great barbe Al nice one again
Nine advisory items at its last MOT Repair work covered up with underseal
Good autopsy Alan, thankyou:):)
cheers pat
Any clues as to what it was you found in the sump?
yes, turned out to be plastic timing chain guide debris lol
Hi Alan, I've got a 2014 2ltr mondeo estate and the clutch started to rattle when i half lift the clutch pedal i renewed the Dmf and 3 piece clutch but the rattle was still there so i asked the garage to replace it all with another one and the rattle is still there. Surley 2 brand new Luk dmfs cant be bad . Any idea to what could be causing this rattle when clutch pedal half lifted?
Hello sir i have same engine and is rasing oil , is not because dpf because i removed it.
Can it be from a leak at fuel pump when car is cold ?
This was a major fault on ford Granada mk2 when fibre timing gears disintegrated and left in sump. And blocks the oil feed
i remember those nylon gears, had to change one a long time ago lol
Once Driven Forever Bitten! As the advert!
Thought I was watching The Car Wizard when you got under the Jag.

No creo que el motor sea tan malo como lo pintas. Ese motor no le cambiaron el aceite en la vida. Estos motores el problema está en la cadena de distribución que es una mierda. Saludos desde Granada Andalucía España.
Hey, what about the Carlton, the Cavalier 2.0 8v, the V6!!!??? and the 1.7td
Vauxhall havent made a decent car for decades. Shocking quality.
🤣
Neither have Fiat
is there any chance like the mondao's do the chain tensioner was spewing oil after the chain guide gave up I'm presuming it's oil fed I've not opened one yet
that was not the problem here
@@alan4x it was just a thought I'm thinking there must be something else going on here after the oil pump to me it ticks all the boxes of low oil preshor like he said he was expecting the oil pump to be the problem and it wasn't that what do you think was original problem
have a 1.2 a12xer corsa owned from 21k now hitting 70k, literally the only problem with the engine has been coil pack. oil changed every 4-5k. noticed some cream under the filler cap but meh? to be expected

My old boss bought 3 ex vauxhall lease vans at auction. I told him don't buy them he said I don't know what I'm talking about ......2 engines later and 2 duel mass flywheels I'm still wrong 🤣🤣
😂🤣🤣
EGR: same size as on a 2 litre engine
Also EGR: plugs up like there's no tomorrow
(I've a euro 4 non-dpf 1.3 Multijet, I'd say that's the most common issue :D)
did u put the jag in sport mode? - made a fair difference in my 4.2 stype [ and to the mpg as well, 17 to nine in full drive it like u stole it mode]
wouldnt it be great if the punters actually told u the truth why the vehicle was acting up - must of been some bad noise/vibration before finally stopping.
PS scrapped the jag now [2 full sills +brake flexis @ £80 each] and wedged engine into my freelander, just a couple of snags to sort out before its debut.........
Why didnt oil pressure light or low oil sensor light up
Hi there Steve I have vauxhall astra 1.3 cdti and get below half tank I have it cuts cut out but had new fuel feed unit put in and now it cut out when cold but I have jerky ride for about good ten minutes then clears it had camshaft position sensor and crankshaft sensor plus new fuel filter and lots of other things . Need your help on that we are very stuck now with what to do with it .
I do get a fault code p01911 which tell me that the fuel metering unit is fault or fuel filter which would you say it is.
hello mate i have been sub to you for time wounder if you could help i have a 59 plate ford ka 1.3cdti same lump as you will know my problem is it needed new glow plugs always started ok just got the warning on dash when i bought it so changed the afew days ago but number 2 glow plug is going no were so left it in but i did not disconnet the battery and tryed to start it with out the number 2plug glowplug plugged into the wire it sounded like it was trying then went bettery went flat gone to it toady connected everything back up but all i get is light on dash and no crank starters not moving do you think i could have blown something kindest of regards Dean.
Hi Alan I need to ask a question about my mk5 mondeo 2l diesel titanium xpack please.
When I lightly apply the brakes it feels as if the ABS is doing overtime and it feels like it's grinding. Could this be them pesky sensors. It also the chucks up loads of thing on the dash like. Collision aware parking assist hill start assist and a few others its really P*&%ING me off 🤣 cheers. Keep up these fantastic videos they're brilliant 👍👍👍👍
hi, the abs is working with various other systems in your vehicle, ...generally speaking, when usually, it is one of the front abs wires that is faulty it will bring up 3 or 4 lights on your dash...this can also affect your engine so best to get the abs ecu scanned for codes and have the faulty sensor replaced as it will only get worse otherwise
Hi Alan, is there a way I can have a chat with you about a Mondeo TDCi 2015 please?
yes just phone up, the garage number is in most of the videos
Thanks Alan 😊brilliant video 👏
thanks buna buna
Arnt the oil pickup seals stiffen up on these vauxhall engines where oil would drop back into sump and from cold start engine would be oil starved overtime it seizes engine...
Bonkers 🤣🤣 clever chap though 👏
To fit the bloody timing chain locking tools on a Corsa I did the bloody turbo and dpf needed to come off
Enjoyed that, something different.
Glad you enjoyed it
Haha.. I love the movie like video introduction. 👍
cheers mark😁
I don’t like the Fiat either but I think the problem is lack of maintenance.
Jtd engines are generally bullet proof, lack of fresh oil will cause issues.
1.9 jtdm is very mappable 210 hp egr delete, dpf deleted.and mine has passed 170000 miles and still pulls like antrain.
Cdti jtd same italian engine.
M32 box is german by Getrag.
Swirl flap manifold is German made by pierburg
Oil pump in that front timing chain cover looks like lotta engine sealant been use on gaskets I recon blocked oil way up with it
Yea. When he couldn’t get the timing cover off, what most mechanics do is wind the studs out, the you can take the cover off to do the chain. It’s a bodge though, bits of sealant fall into the sump.
Who makes that engine, is it Vauxhall's own or Renault or something?
it is a fiat engine
@@alan4x Good grief, say no more!!! Worse than I suspected then. Fiat was never really known for their diesel engines were they! :) I don't think their petrol engines were much better either. We had some Fiat Doblo vans on lease hire at work for a while, they were the worst van I have ever seen. They went back and company never used Fiat again.
Alan. Why do you not like driving on LPG. Also it should automatically switch over to LPG when engine warm.
Great video Alan 😂😂👍
The failing chain is the result of a weak chain, fitted for low friction and overall immisions and fuel economy. What kills these is short journeys with too many stop starts and long oil changes. Simple as that. There is nothing wrong with this engine, it's a user issue not been told they have to use and maintain this is a particular way due to added nonsence over immisions
thanks for the info
Hi are the 1.4 petrol engine in 2008 combo good engine s

44:34 LPG is around 110 RON :)
Iv done a handful of these and the paper filter clogs up and starves the flow of oil
Iv got a 07 Vectra 1.8VVT and my oil pressure light takes about 5 seconds to go out and before the light goes out the engine sounds rather tappy so after watching this i'm starting to think maybe the shells might be worn (i don't know the history of the car)
