Jay was the first person I thought of when I heard Duane Eddy had passed away. Jay toured all over the world with his band Br5-49. If you ever watched any of the videos on The Musician's HOF channel, Jay was behind the camera, did research, booked guests and did a lot of the heavy lifting on the channel. Now he's an educator at The Country Music HOF, a writer at American Songwriter Magazine and most importantly , he was friends with Duane Eddy.
Jay shares a lot of great stories on his Facebook page and you should definitely follow him.

Duane Eddy played on the 2014 release of Mary Gauthier’s song ‘How You Learn to Live Alone’ written by Mary Gauthier and Gretchen Peters from the album ‘Trouble and Love’. The album its played often in my house. The credits are:
‘Lead Vocal, Acoustic Guitar - Mary Gauthier Electric Guitar - Guthrie Trapp Upright Bass - Viktor Krauss Drums - Lynn Williams Piano - Jimmy Wallace Harmonium - Darrell Scott Background Vocals - Darrell Scott and Beth Nielsen Chapman, McCrary Sisters Electric Guitar Solo - Special thanks to the legendary Duane Eddy, the eternal master of Twang.’ Included was Buddy Miller in making the full recording. ☘

Got to see Duane Eddy once in the early 80's in San Francisco ....... Pretty amazing night ! Backup band was Ry Cooder , Hal Blain , Steve Douglas and I think Nick Lowe on bass ....

I have had another day of reflection, but with few who would ever want to discuss it. It is the wear and tear of an artist being drawn down to be a writer.

Wonderful! Thank you, Otis. I was playing a casino gig in Reno in the 80s when a cocktail waitress delivered a note to me onstage on a napkin. It said “Nice playing, my friend! - Duane Eddy”
I ran out into the crowd after we finished the song, but he was long gone. RIP, Twangmaster

The echo isn't on the original video file that I uploaded. It seems to be a problem on RUclips's end. It appears to only last about a minute, so please stick with it. Hopefully it will get sorted soon. All apologies for the hassle.

A short list of albums to check out ‘ Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel’ , ‘ Especially for You’ and ‘ The Twangs the Thang’ also many of the ‘B’ sides to his hit 45’s, ‘First Love First Tears’ , ‘Shuckin’ , ‘ Stretchin’ Out’ and ‘ Saints and Sinners’

Even in my simple naive goals with guitar....I love music and just want to thank you again, Otis, for this content - and you are perfect at how you do these.
Still hope to catch you here in Louisville or up near your neck of the woods.

The things Jay talked about with Duane remind me of going places with the late professional bowler, Dick Weber. (also from Indianapolis, but spent much of his life in the Lou) Talked to everyone. Signed everything. Remembered many of them from years past. His kids are much the same way.

Duane Eddy used a thumb pick all the time but one day, Al Casey asked if he could borrow it- and immediately snapped it in half- and handed back the pick part and that's how me moved to the flat pick! A friend of mine was in a package tour in the UK- November 1963- headlined by Duane and Little Richard with The Shirelles and various British bands-one of which my friend was in- Gene Vincent's British Blue Caps but Gene was often a no show due to his condition- as was the case on this tour. Early on during a rehearsal, Duane came up to him and complimented him on his tone! He is a total tone freak and Duane recognised it- his guitar at that time was a green Gretsch Country Club that got stolen. He said that Jim Horn helped them load up their gear and Jim may have helped load up Duane's mega-heavy Magnatone amp, too! I bought "Tokyo Hits" years ago- what a great album!

Otis, a question for you as a performer: One of the songs on an early Jerry Jeff Walker album was titled, “Hairy-assed Hillbillies,” and it’s about how musicians deal with the letdown after a performance by getting together with a fellow musician or some such. I’m fascinated that there’s a song about that situation. It’s on a 1971 album with the title, “Jerry Jeff Walker.” Do you, as a performer, experience that?
