How Hot Rod Became The Most Dangerous Comedy Ever Made

- Theres no debate that stunt work is the most dangerous job in the film industry. When Andy Samberg and the rest of the Lonely Island crew set out to make Hot Rod, they knew things had to be dialed up. The reason Hot Rod works so well is because of the commitment by the stunt team. With out a dedicated crew, Hot Rod wouldn't have been the cult classic it is today.

So glad seeing Hot Rod getting some love. A brilliantly hilarious movie with a heart felt story. Still one of my favorite comedies ever.
I'd prefer a cooler felt story
@@PHILLYPHAN5118109 🤣🤣😅
The "saying hwuat hWat Hway?" Scene was what made me turn it off 🤣🤣 I did continue later but its alway amazing to think ADULTS made this... Or any of these types of comedy. Feels more like a teenager made them.
@@XstonedmonkeyzX shut up bro, you really do not know anything
I still hear people saying hwat hwat hway or cool beans and not knowing where it came from
Fun Fact: Bill Hader's long hair in the movie was not a wig. Instead, he had hair extensions put in, which he wore through the entire summer the movie was shot.
I think it was on the commentary track where Hader said that he was in a friend’s wedding with that hair.
You are EVERYWHERE!
I also remember an interview with Bill Hader about the real life person that inspired this character in Hot Rod. Apparently that lsd welding story was real :') that person saw the movie and said to Bill Hader what a coincidence it was cause that happened to him, not realizing he was the actual inspiration for it haha
I'm gonna be honest with you, Rod. You look like a giant eagle with fire all around you, and you've got a mountain for a face.
Fun Fact
I had forgotten how good this movie was. Thank you for the reminder to rewatch it. As a non-American this was my introduction to The Lonely Island and this movie was the perfect way for them to reach more of an international audience and showcase their comedic talents.
The What?
Hot Rod is a damn masterpiece.
"Ancestors protect me." "May they protect you!".

@@angelaisacliche MAY YOUR HAMMER BE MIGHTY
These were my ringtones for years.
Hot Rod is a cinematic masterpiece, and one of the greatest motion pictures to ever grace the big screen. Without hyperbole, it is the very definition of art, and is what every other poor work which dares to call itself a film must bow down to in reverence and awe.

Cool Beans
Legitimately one of my favorite movies. It’s my comfort movie when I’ve had a bad day and need a laugh. They’re something charming about how goofy it is, like they knew critics probably wouldn’t love it but everyone working on it loved it so that’s all that mattered. The story, while absolutely ridiculous, is pretty wholesome and shows such a sweet bond between friends. One of the funniest things a friend pointed out about it on first watch was that he couldn’t figure out what decade this was supposed to be set in, like there’s something about it that feels like it could be anywhere from the 1970s to the early 2000s, but he loved that part of it.
it's such a funny concept to make a stunt movie where they don't land a single stunt
It wasn't necessarily *about* the stunts.
He wanted to raise money to save his (step)dad-TO KICK HIS ASS-but actually, and more importantly, win his respect.
WHadaya mean?? He lands BOTH of the Van hit stunts!
Reminded me of the old Super Dave Osborne stunt gags.
As Rod said himself, ‘life is short, stunt it!’
So, cool beans?
Cool beans.
Cool. Beans.
Cool...cool...beans...beans!
I watched this on a plane as a kid. It was the in flight movie. I was laughing so hard the flight attendant had to come over and ask me to keep it quiet.
10 year old me misses this movie.
“Never sneak up on a man that’s been in a chemical fire!”😂
"Rhodesian fighting sticks very lethal"
One of my all time favorite movie lines just because of how out there it is, yet it's still said with the same kind of conviction you'd expect from someone giving actual advice lol
@@Will_Parker I say it way too much 😆
@@jammagat5719ahhh Rhodesian
Funniest movie of all time and the incredible stunt-work does not go overlooked without praise. No matter how many times I've seen this film, I bust up at least once every 5min. Can't get enough of it!
Hell yeah I drink green tea every goddamn Sunday!
I had an acquaintance in the parkour community. He did stunts and passed away from a nasty stunt fall gone wrong. One of the kindest souls I'd ever met, snuffed out like that. Stunt performers don't make enough, and are overlooked so much when it comes to the film industry. It's truly sad. I'm happy that a movie like Hot Rod exists for the sole fact that it does shine at least a small light on the incredible work stunt performers do.
Thats horrible that he passed. You're right, they get very little recognition. I think there should be an action movie starring stunt performers. I do hear about how many injuries they suffer and we should give the ones that want it, time in the spotlight.
Literally one of my favorite movies of all time. Good, clean humor that anyone can enjoy. Knowing they didn't use dummies makes it so much better!!
the fights with his dad are pure comedy genius
Bodesian fighting stick and throwing star 😂
Oh yeah forgot. Ultimate punch 😉

Aaahhhhh…………….Rhodesian
This is one of my all time favorite cult classic movies. I still laugh at the "cool beans" scene whenever I think about it, and this episode is right, the physical comedy is terrific!
"C-c-cool cool beans,beans."
The scene where Andy falls down the hill kills me every time
To this day it is the hardest I have ever laughed. Side-splitting-cant-get-enough-air kind of laughing. Sometimes I rewatch that whole montage to reminisce.
That, and Chris Parnell's AM radio scene with his Calvin peeing tattoo, had me crying from laughter
The way he flings through the air made me laugh harder than anything else before
I remember loving the Jackie Chan movie's when I was kid. And getting to the end credits of the ones that showed the stunts and the accidents was always amazing to me. Jackie Chan broke at least one bone for every movie that legend made!
Jackie has been in about 150 movies and broke about 20 bones.
For anyone who likes Hot Rod, I recommend the New Zealand stunt man comedy 'The Devil Dared Me To' which also came out in 2007. They make a great double-feature.
Bless
Thanks! I'll watch it tonight and edit back in later👍
Loved Hot Rod when it came out and still watch it all the time, absolutely classic and one of my all time favourites!
Genuinely one of the most quotable movies I’ve ever seen.
“Yoo-hoo shitheads. I just found a bag of fireworks in the men’s restroom. Would you guys like to light them off?”
"WHO AM I SUPPOSED TO BUILD RAMPS FOR!? WHO AM I SUPPOSED TO BUILD RAMPS FOR NOW!?"
I go to church every goddamn Sunday! You gonna bring the demons outta me?
Cool beans!
"I've been drinking green tea all goddamn day!"
Rod falling off that mountain for what seems like ages broke my roommate :') she rewinded it for a dozen of times and I don't think I've ever seen her laugh that loud haha
This is my favorite movie. I know there’s so many objectively better movies, but I have never enjoyed watching a movie more. People that love this movie, LOVE this movie. It’s always fun to meet another person who will do a cool beans riff with you.
Definitely LOVE love this movie
My husband's favorite story to tell about us dating is he knew he was going to marry me when I was giving a detailed plan to him and in the middle said "and we're going to go through the trash for cans...and newspapers-- to sleep on!"
@@nicolegotberg my wife texted me this week “I’d rather die than live in a world where I can’t kick your ass” and it made me fall in love with her all over again 😂
Honestly one my favorite movies back in the day. I still randomly laugh thinking about that scene when he falls down the hill for 3 minutes straight 😂
One the most impacting films on my late childhood. Special place in my heart to this day.
One of the best dad/ son movies ever. We never miss an opportunity to riff it in conversations.
The Oscar's need a stuntman category.
This is legit one of the most underrated comedies of all time, my friends and I still can still quote it start to finish all these years later
THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE MOVIE SINCE I WAS A KID! IM SO HAPPY SO SEE A VIDEO ABOUT IT POP UP ON MY PAGE!
I remember me and a few friends 19 yo or so at the time, had to kill time in Amsterdam before our flight home and decided to go to the cinema to see a random film.
It just so happened to be Hot Rod. I went in with no expectations and came out loving it !
This movie was made in the town I grew up in. The got to watch a bunch of these stunts live as they were doing them.
I miss the comedy videos made by the lonely island
One of the funniest movies I've ever seen! Hat's off to all the talented people who made this gem
My high school had a big theater and on the weekends for charity they would show movies there for high school students only and we got to vote on what movies to play. One weekend Hot Rod and some other movie were going to be shown. They were gonna show the other movie first (I don't even remember what it was) and we all threatened yo stage a mass walk out if Hot Rod wasn't shown first. Eventually they caved and put on HR. Me and my friends knew every single line and screamed them out seconds before the actors said them. When the movie was over we left and didn't even stay for the other one. All the teachers and other students not in my large group of friends was so pissed at us but that was one of the best days of my life.
One of the most underrated comedies ever
Hot Rod is a criminally underrated movie. There are so many quotable lines as well as insanely funny moments
One or my favorite comedies. I have watched this movie so many times I can't count. I have tried to get so many friends to watch and they hate it. Which is fair. Comedy is objective. But, this movie is one I will watch over and over till I die.
One of my favorites. So weird but so funny
This is one of my favorite comedies. It's so funny and absurd, and everyone is so goddamn good in it
This is filmed in my town, Cloverdale BC Canada. I learned to swim in that pool! Last summer my buddy from Norway came and is a huge fan of Hot Rod so I took him to all the filming locations including Rod’s house. The owners came out and told us all about the filming etc. Hilarious movie, it’s a must see.
This is still one of my top 5 movies I’ve have seen in theaters. It was a wild experience
Edit: it was just me and 2 other friends in the whole screening. We got to enjoy it for ourselves
I actually watched that first stunt of the stuntman breaking his leg about 10 times years ago, because I could not tell if it was cut with a rag doll. He flops so loosely after the hit that it seemed unreal.
I always call this my favorite comedy when people ask my favorite movies (even tho few people have actually seen this masterpiece). There are so many parts of this movie where I laugh nonstop and it's just a fun movie overall
Man pools are perfect for holding water
Hot rod is genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time
i absolutely love this movie, its extremely underrated, and so so unique
Right onnnn they be bad asses 💪🏼
A comedy that brings tears to my eyes from laughter to this day 😂
"That's Jackie Chan!" I love that delivery
It's one of my go to movies to cheer me up when I am sad and depressed. The fall scene off the cliff kills me laughing every damn time.
This is what made me love Andy.
The fact that the first jump was a real dude is brutal af. I literally thought my whole life that was a dummy because of the way his leg flopped. Daymnnnnnn
Shout out for the Joi Harris shoutout! I was following that story closely and was deeply saddened to hear of her passing
This was one of those I found in the $5 bin at Walmart back in the day. From the opening scene I knew I had made a mistake not seeing it earlier
Well, yeah... but finding a hidden gem is also pretty great.
That mtn side tumble scene had to be the funniest comedy moment in decades, next to anchor man parts
Just seeing the short clips made me crack up. Every now and then instead of saying 'thank you' my partner sings it
Dude, thank you for being excellent at what you do. The topics, pacing, level of detail, fact/vs personal opinion, volume/tone of voice all work perfectly together.
I know I’ll enjoy your videos, even if it’s a topic I know nothing about. You’ll have millions of subs in no time 🥳
I literally just watched the movie today for the first time and thought how weird that no famous channel has yet made a video on Hot Rod
over a decade later me and buddies still quote this movie daily.
I'm so happy that people love this movie as much as I do. Restored some of my faith in humanity.
I'm glad Chan got a shout-out. I was going to leave a comment before I even watched.
Love this movie. Some of the hits and crashes are super brutal.
This is still till this day, my favorite comedy of all time. It’s so effin funny and has such a great soundtrack
What a finish. Perfect incidental comedy
Thank you for bringing attention to this movie! I love this movie and it’s such an underrated movie !
I don't remember laughing so hard before or since watching hot rod. I almost died of laughter on the fall scene, I completely lost it for the whole duration.
The fall is one of my favorite scenes. It goes on for so long.
I remember an interview with Bill Hader about the real life person that inspired his character in Hot Rod. Apparently that lsd welding story was real :') that person saw the movie and said to Bill Hader what a coincidence it was cause that happened to him, not realizing he was the actual inspiration for it haha
still today one of the best! RIP Comedy
This video is great. Good work!
This film is honestly my favorite comedy of all time. Everytime someone wants me to recommend them a comedy I always tell them to go watch "Hot Rod"
i loved hot rod when i watched it like 2 years ago and i love andy sandmburg and the lonely island
I remember seeing trailers for this and thinking it looked kinda dumb, only to have to pause the movie after the first scene because I was laughing so hard. The way he just immediately pukes his guts out after that crash is so funny.
At one point this was me and my older brothers favourite movie. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this
Hot Rod is by far one of my all-time favorite movies.
this is literally my favourite movie of all time
Wow, didn't know about this movie, but now I need to watch it
One of my all time favs! I remember when this came out and Bill and Andy were my fav guys on SNL. LASER CATS! Throw in Danny McBride and the Jorma and the other guy from lonely island, you got a hilarious fkn movie.
I got the dvd from my brother years ago, I had no idea what SNL was. It's still one of my favorite comedy movies :D
Aaaah the time where good movies like that where thrown at our faces weekly.
0:41 Isla Fisher doesn't give AF. (This is pointed out in the movie's commentary as well!)
I was an extra in the scene where they are handing out flyers in the hallway. Made 150 bucks to walk down the hall like 5 times. Good times
Hot Rod is pretty much my favourite comedy movie ever and even one of my all-time favourite movies. Nice video, maybe a bit too general on comedy stunt work, but even so, cool video :D
It's amazing to me that no matter how many times I watch Hot Rod, I'm never prepared for the riot
I love that scene! I've probably re-watched just that part 15 times on RUclips over the past few years, I keep going back to it when I need a laugh.
There was no time to do anything accept leave and just hope that youre not hurt
Bro, if I break my leg I'm doing it for a usable take. I'm not a stuntman but I felt that
Him fighting his Step-Dad was fucking hilarious, always killed me, I haven't seen it in forever I have to watch the movie tonight now
classic filming in Vancouver/suburbs being portrayed as america! my aunt lived near some of the residential filming locations and it was always funny driving by.
And the Europe soundtrack was something else!😬👌🏼
Oh man, I have never laughed harder at the theaters then I did while watching this.
I'm currently wearing my "My name is Dave, and I like to party" shirt
It was released at the peak America's funniest home videos, and the beginning of the RUclips Era
One of my favorites. I always thought that the first stunt was a dummy. WOW!
That long fall almost killed my friend from laughing so hard while watching it in the theatre.
This movie made me laugh so hard I fell from the couch. Absolue gem!
This movie has been one of my top 5 movies for well over a decade!😂
there is a british tv show going a lot for a similar type of comedy. It's called The Goes Wrong Show. They are a theatre company and every episode is a play that completely derails by the end of it, including some physical accidents. It's awesome, it's some of the funniest stuff I've seen! :)
"Did you reinforce the ramp?"
"Nah man, there wasn't time."
This movie reminds me of the character Super Dave Osborne from the Canadian comedy skit show, Bizzare.
Being a stuntman would be an incredibly fun but scary job
One of my top 10 favorites. Love that movie.
The scene where he falls down the mountain had me laughing so hard it hurt
This movie could have been 90 minutes of Isla Fisher in an El Camino T-shirt and it would still be one of my favorite flick of all time
