There isn't a battle here, one company is thriving(ish), one is bankrupt. The Karma's max range is actually smaller than the Tesla's even running on gas. You can swap out a battery faster than you can fill the Karma tank, the Karma is slower, more expensive, less clean, and less specious. The only thing it has over the Tesla is that it looks fantastic, but the Tesla is extremely far from ugly.
edmaluf I agree. The Karma just doesn't look that good and all that space taken up by the batteries is terrible. I wouldn't even consider the Karma because the Tesla is cheaper and completely eliminates gas versus using gas to make an "Electric" Vehicle

Well I guess you have a good point there, I didn't consider that. I was referring to the touch screens in most newer cars though, not just the Tesla S in particular. I still think there should at least be a sunroof button up near the sunroof though. I just don't want to have to flip through any menus and select an option to execute such a simple task as reaching up and tapping a button. It just seems cumbersome and gimicky to me, that's all. As a professional driver, I had the opportunity to drive many different makes and models of cars both new and old, the Tesla S being among my favorites for sure but the one thing most of the newer ones have in common is the annoying touch screens. Don't get me wrong, they are way cool and all, it's just that I don't think every single function should be controlled by them. What is so wrong with reaching down and turning a knob or pressing a button when you want to turn the radio station or adjust the A/C for example? If find myself having to exit out of the sat nav to get to the radio and then do the same to turn on the air. It's counter-intuitive and takes my focus off of the road, especially when the sun is shining on the screen and you can't even read it, super annoying!
I couldn't wait for the Cadillac ELR, so I bought a Volt, and love it. Super car, comfortable, smooth, handles well, plenty of power, no range issues, and 95% of my driving is with in the battery range. Plus I saved a pile of cash, enough to buy a second.
I'm pretty sure that even the super chargers do not charge that fast. Btw, the EPA never got the 300-mile range that Tesla claimed. They got around 265 I believe.
Agreed, but I think she was referring to the fact that, in an ICE vehicle, refilling takes 5 minutes, whereas a full recharge ('refill') can take 5 or more hours. But your point is well taken: People just have to adjust their driving habits by planning ahead - at least until more charging station infrastructure appears. Once that infrastructure is in place, it will be less 'painful' for Joe Consumer. And when LTO ultra-fast recharging lithium batteries appear, a paradigm shift will take place.
0:28 People are on their phone too much while driving so they put a giant one in the console. Now you'll have the look away from the road to adjust the radio volume because it feels the same as the AC/Heater button. Smart.
Right? Because I never run out of gas after 300 miles in a normal car and have to stop and "plug in" the gas pump. If you think about it, a gas car takes about 10-15 minutes to refill by the time you stop, pump, pay, and get on your way. We're VERY quickly approaching the point where charging an electric is just as fast. Even today, if you add a quick bite to eat and bathroom break, they're all but dead even. The Tesla S 85KW really is a game changer.
Sorry to break the news, but I am reservation holder P7X in Europe, and just finalized my order. But then again you don`t want to face facts, so you probably don`t care about that .) The 40kWh was dropped as only 4% of the buyers wanted it. And again, the price starts at $79,900 before tax rebate. The average price of a Model S before taxes is about $80,000. Of course you can make it well above $100,000 if you add lots of options, performance pack etc.....
i have a question. i dont have car, so i realy dont know. you say (at 1:30) you have to plug in the car, when your range is gone. how does this differ from petrol cars? you dont have to pour petrol in it? what happends if you use all your fuel? (*****) And what is average range of gasoline car that goes as fast as Tesla?
The only issue is that it takes less than 10min to re-fuel a gas car, whereas it takes more than an hour to fully charge an electric :) It really is not an issue unless you plan on long road trips.
Most people commenting on RUclips are infantile mor***, but you`re polite and knowledgeable! I am impressed by they way you express your concerns while still able to listen to what I`ve found by doing a lot of research. I`ve seen/been in countless discussions where people bash Tesla, and dismiss any real world experience with EVs (Leaf, Roadster and Model S). You`ll afford the Model S one day, and with your attitude you`ll get far in life! Best regards, Oyvind
There are not a lot of Tesla SuperCharger stations depending on where you live. So you will probably have to use a regular charging station which can take up to 12 hours to fully charge.
I know when my family road trips, we make one stop for food that might take 30-45 minutes. And 300 miles is generous when you take into account the fact that we start out our trips in the Appalachains.
The 300 mile range is rated at a constant speed of 55 mph and doesn't account for regenerative braking that activates not only when the brake is pressed but also when the acceleration pedal is released (can also be adjusted on the fly to allow for coasting instead) which adds a lot of cumulative mileage over a longer trip. Especially in the city whilst combustion engine cars need to idle, expending fuel, the EV would simply do nothing.
She didn't say it, maybe assuming we all already know. But the Karma which is what the model s is against in this video has a gasoline engine also. The gas powered engine of the Karma kicks in once the electric battery runs out giving you longer ranger. And you can keep filling it up anywhere, anytime there is a traditional gas station around. So you can keep on driving with a karma. The model s doesn't have that gas engine there is no plan b so it just stops running after its out.
yeah except you can fill up within a matter of a couple minutes and gas stations are ubiquitous wherever you go. Charging stations still aren't common in most parts of the country and it can take upwards of an hour to fully charge the battery at a charge station and 8+ hours on normal household electricity. As technology advances electric vehicles may become a more viable option, but at this point they are only really practical for short distance city driving.
I just had to go to the gas station today. It took me ten minutes from home to pump, 5 min wait for the diesel pump to be free, 3 min to fill truck, 5 min in the line to pay, and ten minutes drive back home. That is over 30 min. Could have just plugged in an EV when I got home and been done with a "full tank" waiting each morning.
Well..If you're from Europe you should know that the Model S is sold here for much more than 100k. At least here in Italy,my best friend thought about buying one and at the end, taxes and delivery included they said it would be around 150.000$. That's a LOT of money for an electric sedan. Don't get me wrong, I love the Tesla S but I'm afraid it won't go mainstream too soon.
The Tesla battery range may be a lot lower after a few years and when the ambient temperature is too hot or too cold. The Fisker needs the Lotus range extender engine, which will be produced soon, not the inefficient GM lump. The Fisker is made in Finland.
Its a sad sad sad thing, I really like the car. If I had the money, I would have bought one. I hope they hang in there and pull through because I would still like to buy one within the next few years.
Range will take a minor hit compared to rated miles, but I`ve tested the car myself and the range does not take a huge hit from cold. Heating a cold cabin probably draws 4-5kW for 10-15 minutes, but maintaining temp once heated only draws about 1kW. One should preheating the car and battery with shore power before roadtrips. I live in Oslo. Norwegian roads are narrow and not of great quality. Most large norwegian cities are within 300 miles of the capitol. I get mine late september.
For some people, the Tesla will be cheaper, though I don't think that will be the case for most people. I'll be curious to know how the battery does in Norway because cold weather reduces range drastically as the battery has a warmer that maintains temperature to help improve life span. I wish you good luck with the car.
Norway will probably be great, as the cold weather reduces degradation from aging. Battery life: cold=good, extreme cold=bad, extreme heat=very bad. The pack warmer will draw some power to heat the battery before charing/use but not when the car is parked. It does not kick in while parked before outside temps are close to -30C. We`ll make up for some of it though due to low speed limits compared to the US. Most roads have 40-50mph limit, and just a few have 60mhp speed limit.
You're right -- people are getting well over 300 miles in the real world, including using the A/C. Google Motor Trend's trip in the Tesla from LA to Las Vegas. They had no problem in a very harsh environment -- Death Valley.
I absolutely hate the Command Center in my Fisker, when I spend six figures on car I want to be able to use it not have to take hours to figure it out. The 300 mile range is pretty good but takes a while to recharge. Worst of all the $600 tire only last 8 maybe 10 thousand miles.
Well, I can't imagine going 300 miles 8 out of 12 months without A/C or heat on or having the windows down. So, in other words, that 265-mile range the EPA got is close to what real drivers in the real world should expect.
I've also seen analyses that most people would want to replace a battery at 20-25% loss. If that happens in under 8 years, then the cost of an EV, just from the fuel standpoint, is much higher than an ICE vehicle.
He just said it comes with an 8 year warranty so if the range does get too low in 8 years they'll replace it. It's got a far more advanced cooling system than your laptop and disperses use intelligently, making the battery last longer.
I'll still get a 60kw Model S with the 210 range since a super charger station is either already here or being installed in my city. There are going to be so many SC stations here in Florida i really won't charge at home much. All you have to do with 210 miles is charge the car every 3 days at a SC station for free.
2: Batteries lose range over time. However, 70% after 5 years is unrealistic. Model S owners with 16-20,000 miles on the car see no degradation! Roadster owners report about 2% degradation per year, and that`s with a way smaller battery and older battery tech. Panasonic measured about 76% capacity after 500 tough cycles. Litium-ion batteries far exceed 500cycles/76% with shallow cycles! 70% capacity is likely to happen after about 10 years/110-150,000 miles. All numbers I find support this.
The 4-5 hours it takes to charge at home will mostly be done while you sleep. Tesla supercharging takes 20-22 minutes. Next Thursday, they may be announcing another quick charging advancement. Possibly swaps. Idk.

Of course you can make it well above $100,000 if you add lots of options, performance pack etc.....
You got a link to that news?
i have a question. i dont have car, so i realy dont know. you say (at 1:30) you have to plug in the car, when your range is gone. how does this differ from petrol cars? you dont have to pour petrol in it? what happends if you use all your fuel?
(*****) And what is average range of gasoline car that goes as fast as Tesla?
The only issue is that it takes less than 10min to re-fuel a gas car, whereas it takes more than an hour to fully charge an electric :) It really is not an issue unless you plan on long road trips.
That's a grand idea. Other than the fact that there are only currently 9 of them.
360p? Really? What year is it??
Which company still in business and thriving and selling cars as of today?
There are not a lot of Tesla SuperCharger stations depending on where you live. So you will probably have to use a regular charging station which can take up to 12 hours to fully charge.
this did not sound like a review it sounded like her putting out her personal opinions on the car not being at all impartial
I know when my family road trips, we make one stop for food that might take 30-45 minutes. And 300 miles is generous when you take into account the fact that we start out our trips in the Appalachains.
What battery did you get???
The 300 mile range is rated at a constant speed of 55 mph and doesn't account for regenerative braking that activates not only when the brake is pressed but also when the acceleration pedal is released (can also be adjusted on the fly to allow for coasting instead) which adds a lot of cumulative mileage over a longer trip. Especially in the city whilst combustion engine cars need to idle, expending fuel, the EV would simply do nothing.
which make do you prefer?
She didn't say it, maybe assuming we all already know. But the Karma which is what the model s is against in this video has a gasoline engine also. The gas powered engine of the Karma kicks in once the electric battery runs out giving you longer ranger. And you can keep filling it up anywhere, anytime there is a traditional gas station around. So you can keep on driving with a karma. The model s doesn't have that gas engine there is no plan b so it just stops running after its out.
The Tesla is such a sleeper. In real life, it's just a pretty sedan
yeah except you can fill up within a matter of a couple minutes and gas stations are ubiquitous wherever you go. Charging stations still aren't common in most parts of the country and it can take upwards of an hour to fully charge the battery at a charge station and 8+ hours on normal household electricity. As technology advances electric vehicles may become a more viable option, but at this point they are only really practical for short distance city driving.
September will be an awesome month for you. I can't currently afford a Tesla, so I live vicariously though others like you. Best of luck.
0:50 How much does it cost ?
I'd still buy the Fisker.
Thanks for Sharing
I'd love to see her driving 300 miles without stopping for an hour or two. To quote George Carlin: "People are fucking stupid!"
I just had to go to the gas station today. It took me ten minutes from home to pump, 5 min wait for the diesel pump to be free, 3 min to fill truck, 5 min in the line to pay, and ten minutes drive back home. That is over 30 min. Could have just plugged in an EV when I got home and been done with a "full tank" waiting each morning.
charging for hours can be done while you sleep so that your car is ready to go every morning without having to visit a gaz station when you are busy..
I just came here to expect a race between the 2
Blame Jay Lenno for quoting it wrong. It actually is USD 110.000 with the same options as the Fisker...which is still USD 10.000 more than the Fisker
I hope they hang in there and pull through because I would still like to buy one within the next few years.
to be honest if i had to pick from the 2 though id probably buy the fisker.. because it looks better
id take the fisker, take out all the electric stuff, swap a corvette engine in it, and then drive one of the best 4 door cars in history
Most roads have 40-50mph limit, and just a few have 60mhp speed limit.
and of course you can easily plug it in when you get home every few nights depending on your daily driving distance so 300miles is plenty.
2021?
so true, agreed !
Don't know about the Fisker, but for Tesla, Nissan and a few others, the batteries come with an 8-year warranty
I agree. The battle should be between Fisker Karma and Chevy Volt on one side and something like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla on the other.
Well, I can't imagine going 300 miles 8 out of 12 months without A/C or heat on or having the windows down. So, in other words, that 265-mile range the EPA got is close to what real drivers in the real world should expect.
I just saw a Maserati Quatroportte this morning and saw a ROLLS ROYCE and a FISKER KARMA in the same intersection on opposite sides!!
why lease one? I really think i can use it to get to work every day since i live in sunnyvale and work at palo alto
I've also seen analyses that most people would want to replace a battery at 20-25% loss. If that happens in under 8 years, then the cost of an EV, just from the fuel standpoint, is much higher than an ICE vehicle.
Fisker's interior is so much nicer.
And I was wondering what are all those fires I see every time I get out of the house...
One of the most respected news channels ;)
How would swapping a corvette engine in it help? The ICE doesn't power the wheels.
WHY NO HD?????
Fisker, it has a great cleaner overall design, no excess and everything flows. ...apart that demit console tablet .
The Karma actually has excellent handling for such a large car.
We know who won
Well yah ok true true but note that the temperature is correct at 0:27......
The 4-5 hours it takes to charge at home will mostly be done while you sleep. Tesla supercharging takes 20-22 minutes. Next Thursday, they may be announcing another quick charging advancement. Possibly swaps. Idk.
