    What's the interest level in the Atari cab? What if it had an old-school looking TV as a monitor? What about a wood-grain styled side art?

    • @DeAthWaGer
      @DeAthWaGer 10 месяцев назад +1

      Atari has no interest in putting their VCS games in an arcade cabinet, it's a conflict of branding.
      They'd probably insist on using the VCS controller instead of a real stick.
      Lol I guess they could try the CRT look by putting a bent fresnel lens in the bezel in front of an lcd monitor.
      I honestly can't stand when they tack a bunch of SNES roms into the Capcom cabinets. One could say it's... tacky.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment

      Yeah, I'm just trying to think of things that would make the Atari cab betterer than it is (and the answer is, sadly, almost anything). Very un-inspiring. I wonder about the licensing of Atari games, as they've obviously pretty loose with giving them out. Either way, plenty of "room for improvement".

      Either way, you'd think they'd know exactly what games will be on there.... so why not list them? It's another indication of a product that needed some more time "cooking" so to speak.

      I don't think the games themselves suck (I mean some of those are the greatest arcade games of all time). My beef is that we've seen them all before, multiple times, in other cabs. Simply no excuse for 6 - six! - Pac-Man games on a Galaga cab; no excuse for for raised edges right next to a joystick.

    Raised side panels are not a problem for me, even if the stick is close to it, because my doc ordered me to stop playing with the side of my hand resting on the machine. It causes carpel tunnel problems. She told me to start putting my hand so I'm grabbing the upper portion of the stick, with the palm facing down. Took a few weeks to get used to, but now I'm not waking up with numb hands anymore. I think I'm also getting better control authority, too. Oh, there's no bloody way I'm going anywhere near a Buck Hunter with just a 17" screen. No. That game demands at least a 32" screen. Thanks for the video.

    A1Up doesn't get it. Their quality and product are not worth more than $200 USD at best. The quality and service somehow keep getting worse, but prices keep going up. Most of us can play these games on a PC anytime for free, so paying almost a grand for some cardboard, worst controls on the market, and a head ache just doesn't make sense. MAYBE if they could play tons of games or download new ones, but at a handful of games on one cab.. go fish.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад

      I'd say this - in tough economic times, these cabs are a much harder sell regardless of price. I do think there is value in both nostalgia and form factor (particularly shooting and driving games, which are harder to emulate if you're building you own cab), but that Atari cab is missing out on both.

    • @DeAthWaGer
      @DeAthWaGer 10 месяцев назад +1

      The quality drop REALLY shows when they try to shill these things in a location with actual arcade machines, like conventions.
      The only ones playing them are tired of waiting in line for the real cabs, and by the end of the day the arcade 1ups are all loose and swaying during gameplay 🤣

    • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah, it's pretty doubtful that A1up cabs could survive in a real arcade. But to be fair, that's not their intended use. Mine have held up reasonably well, and I beat on them pretty good. Of course, I'm more willing than most to simply drive a dry wall screw into the side of a machine to lock it down.

    This company should have you design a cabinet. Love your ideas. What do you think it costs this company to actually make a cabinet like Time Crisis or these deluxe cabs? And why do we always want them to make our favorite cabinets when we know the size of the monitor and the quality going into it isn’t going to be what we want out of the box. Maybe it’s because we know they can make a nice looking cabinet except the (50th Anniversary Atari) and mod it. This might be one reason why we are all mad because the price is so high and we all know we have to shell out hundreds more to mod the cabinet the way we want. If they continue to make cabinets of this quality and size they should lower the price by hundreds so we are able to mod the cabinet to how we want it. Then we as the consumer can justify our purchase and time to mod.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад +1

      Well thanks! I do consult a smaller company RE pinball design, but I'd love to design a video game cab. As I understand it, one of the major costs of making these cabs is getting the factory ready to make them. A1up's obviously spent a lot of money doing that for these Deluxe cabs, even though the changes are relatively minor. Parts have gone up (although perhaps less than you'd think), and shipping has become much more expensive. So I understand A1up doing re-treads. But I do wish they were more open about when other versions of the same cab were coming (like the XLs).

      I think my next video will be about the new 4K version, as some more specs have come out on it. The one thing I don't know is whether the games on the cab have been given an update (better graphics/physics). If they have, it becomes a very attractive machine. If they haven't, then you'd essentially be buying it to BYOG 3rd party tables like VPX and Future Pinball ('cause adding solenoids and shakers isn't that hard to do to the HD version). It will have a new UI, which is awesome news.

      No shilling here - I try to calls 'em like I sees 'em! And good point about the white border around the shooting games - it does effectively make the screen even smaller than 17". The one game where the smaller size doesn't hurt so much is T2, where you can spray & pray plus use grenades.

The Atari cab looks like another A1Up loser and the Galaga Deluxe cab is just another rehash but then again, Arcade 1Up seems like they want to be the unofficial "kings" of the rehashes. Thanks for the kind words - glad you dug it! I don't mind the idea of a new deluxe cab - the form factor clearly better than in the 1st or 2nd gen Legacy machines. But considering that there's been very few new titles to hit shelves (realistically only 1 so far), and the same exact game line-ups, there hasn't been much to get excited for the established owner. To be fair, A1up did put out a bunch of new cabs last year, so I can understand a slow-down in releases... but not a change up of game titles, or inherently poor designs for a highly anticipated new title.

      Well for some games - vertical shooters and Pac-Man style games - A1up's the better choice for sure. The screen is oriented in the right direction and is, technically, better as it has crisper/deeper colors and gamma. The other main reason of course is nostalgia/branding which definitely goes in A1up's favor. Which is why the design of the new Atari cab is so baffling - it's design is poor, and the branding arguably worse (although, again, this is a very subjective thing). Lastly, A1up def better for specialty cabs like T2, the driving cabs, and TRON & STAR WARS.

And of course, you can clearly see the sides coming up in their promo video as well. Truth is that none of the images are likely from a real-world machine, but rather a CG mock-up. Hopefully the final, shipped, version does not have what is an obvious design flaw. We shall see.

I know the pedals do add value/cost more than a normal shooter, but still... at $500 I'd have at least some interest in it. The cab I had the most interest - the Atari 50th - has such a poor design that it's hard to believe that that's the final version (and hopefully, it isn't).

      Patrick, I gotta tell you, for being the biggest player on the scene they do seem like the most dis-interested in actually playing the games, which is always more important to me than how a cab looks. THE SIMPSONS, the 2nd gen Legacy MK cab, the waaaay too small 4 player decks, this Atari design - all of them bizarrely crippled by bad design decisions. For 2-4 player games, and any horizontal game, the ALU murders A1up. But the vertical cabs (Pac-Man/Galaga) from A1up do have a huge advantage b/c they have the screen oriented in the right direction.

      On the one hand I can't blast A1up for the new Deluxe form factor - there are what most fans wanted to see right from the start. Even less when there's every reason to suspect a larger XL cab is coming down the line.

      "Wtf is wrong with Arcade1up....i mean gees, they keep releasing the same games over and over amd over and over amd over amd over again. WTF man."
      The answer is simple: THOSE GAMES SELL. They're reliable moneymakers that help ensure they can pump out other things whether those other ones fail or succeed. Arcade1Up even told us this when they revealed the first Legacy cabs - they straight up said they would be rereleasing variations of them every year because they're titles that have reliably sold. Its not a bad business model at all.

    They are all junk and not real retro arcades. Problems 1) They are not CRT. 2) They are not original hardware, and they don't provide a genuine experience. At best they should be based on original chips if that is not possible they should make new ASIC that behaves like the old hardware. This are just lame emulation not even FPGA. I was a small kid when the originals were released in the arcades and let me tell you. Nothing comes close to the original hardware experience.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад

      Personally, I don't mind that they're not CRTs, which are heavier, consume more electricity, and would likely be much more expensive (if it's even possible). BUT, if there was ever a cab that should have something more old-school it would be the Atari cab. If the design flaws are dealt with (raised edges), along with better art, if this cab had some sort of older style monitor (or even a 5:4 aspect ratio BOE), then I think people would be much more enthusiastic.
