      I think the community was a little too judgemental when this cab 1st came out. I was one of them, but now it's growing on me. Light up coin doors, decent controls, online scores, beautiful marquee. The joystick issue can be improved using an extension sold on Amazon. The biggest issue is the art not being nostalgic, but I would argue 50 years of Atari is pretty awesome. This cab is now on my radar.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  4 месяца назад +1

      yeah, it's been on mine too (obviously). The joystick position is, however, a pretty big negative... but I haven't seen the extension you mentioned. Does it just make the joystick taller?

    Very very cool looking cabinet. Lived the EM and golden age arcade experience. Love the look of this cabinet it pains me to be on the fence.
    Currently have 19 arcade games in m collection. 9 A1Us I’ve bought in the past year to complement my 9 electromechanical arcade game collection. Along with a 60-1 trash find space invaders cabinet.
    As much as I want to add this cabinet because of the 2600 games. Going to have to hold.
    Looking to add an official Skee-Ball and thin out my EM games to do so.
    Many are down on A1Us but I love mine. For the money and the space. The ability to update controls. The nostalgia. There’s nothing better.

      A purist eh? I'd say I agree with you, but as I don't have any of the other Atari-themed cabs from A1up, the only time I play ASTEROIDS or DELUXE is on the ALU (where I get decent scores). But I might have to re-learn how to play this cab.... if it ever goes on sale.

    Hi JVD, I intend to buy this cab when it is released in Australia next month. I know it’s not for everyone but I am a child of the early 70’s so Atari is the top of list for me. Cheers.

      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад +1

      If you're of a certain age (cough cough, like us), then this cab has even more pull. A1up's counting on that obviously; nostalgia is a big factor with all their products. Still, this cab pops. I can see this thing being a modder's dream. I know I'm seriously looking at it with the intention of supping it up down the line.

    Atari's first arcade machine in twenty plus years. I hope Arcade 1up together with Atari will produce more arcade systems and even ones with brand new games.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад +1

      Well, it's kinda of an arcade machine. It'll be very interesting if this cab is ever re-released, or if this is a one-off production run. It's really too bad that there wasn't a better 2600 selection (no Activision, nor some great Atari produced games like Ms Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man), or 5200/7800 games. considering this is branded as a "50 year" cab, those a pretty massive omissions. The raised edges & placement of joystick still very questionable too... still, it's a handsome cab; too bad that it's not a true 50 year cab.

    The details on this are where they really nailed it, from the gold t-molding trim and speaker grill surrounds to the light-up volcano buttons this cab really pops compared to anything else I've seen even next to the other "vault" edition cabs. I was ho-hum on the horizontal screen design since I think it was a major oversight in the Tempest Legacy cabinet to do a horizontal vs vertical configuration... until I considered that the shape of this cab was modelled on the Asteroids cabinet which is a horizontal orientation. I do think the screen angle is messed up, it really needs to be tilted back an inch or two and there's plenty of room to do so... makes it tricky to play comfortably without an aftermarket riser or stool. It's got a notably worse player to screen angle ratio compared to any other deluxe cabinet I own (SFII, MKII and Galaga).
    The one thing I might change on mine is to swap opaque white buttons that match the trackball in lieu of the light-up versions along with a gold or black ringed red illuminated "Live" button replacement (matched to the volcanos) since the white and yellow buttons are super bright in the stock configuration and create some reflection/hot spots on the screen I don't care for.

      What really sold me is looking at that video, it looks like a legit arcade cab (ok, maybe a bit short), but very nice. And if you thinking picking up an Atari cab generally speaking, the looks + the 2600 games make a no-brainer (well, besides price)

  • @ThomasGrillo

    Ever since my doctor showed me the correct way to use a joystick, raised side panels are not a problem, at all. I am glad to know the stick was not as close to the side panel as you once thought, based on the renders. Does look like a nice cab, but what would've made it more desirable is if it had two player Pong on it. But, it's not a bad looking cab, at all. Definitely unique looking. Thanks for the video.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment

      The lack of true 2 players games is a knock, but I respect making it a single player cab. PERHAPS they could have added two Atari controller ports for the OG joysticks/paddles for two player games. Def room for improvement down the line if they ever make a 2nd version of this. The joystick is probably just far enough away from the edge to be usable, which is great news.

    • @ThomasGrillo
      @ThomasGrillo 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@evilgeniusentertainment Yeah, definitely not a dealbreaker for me, either that they did it single player. In fact, I've been trying to collect more single player cabs, these days, to balance out all the multiplayer ones in my home arcade. If you get one of these, and just can't bring yourself to use the stick palm down, don't forget about modding the control deck with shims to bring it up, if the side panel does get in the way, after all. :)

      They actually do have a few multi-player Pong options that were launched around the same time, a standard cocktail table, a bar height table AND a miniature 2-player countercade. I like that they chose to focus on doing a quality 1-player design based on a blinged out Asteroids cabinet shape.

    JDV. This Atari 50 Deluxe cab looks very good but I am going to hold off for the Pro version of this cab, which I think A1Up will eventually release. A good point about the tracking ball not being lit up. That little mistake might be rectified should and when A1Up release the Pro version of this cab. • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад +1

      Agree on all counts - too expensive, should have had a better game selection. One thing I'd say though is that the aspect ratio of the screen is a wee bit closer to true on the A1up than the ALU, and over-all screen quality is better too. But for two player games and over-all selection of games (even not counting coinopsx) goes to the ALU.

    How long is Atari going to release things with the thought that Atari 2600 games being included is a huge benefit? I had a 2600 as a kid and at the time, I loved it. However, we need to remember how many awful games were released for it and even the good ones haven't aged well. As a kid I couldn't believe when I heard Pac-Man was out for the 2600. But even as a kid for the first time seeing games able to be played at home, I remember seeing the Pac-Man port for the first time and was like, This is awful! I wasn't expecting an arcade perfect port, but so many games were rushed to meet dates. With that said, Dear Atari, stop including 2600 games in new products like it's some great selling point. They aren't. When you go back and try some of those 2600 games now you play em for about 30 seconds or less before realizing they didn't age well. And no, that's not the case for all old games as NES still has many, many games that are great to go back and play for days. I can name like ten 2600 games that I would now play for maybe 5 minutes. If you're gonna put old console games on new products, at least use games from the 5200 and/or the 7800. Why the 2600? Unfortunately the Atari 2600 game dev teams weren't very good, but their arcade dev teams were absolutely legendary! Take away the 2600 games and add more of the arcade games their arcade teams developed/published all through the 80s as well as arcade licenses you now own like Bezerk and Frenzy, then you got something.

    • @evilgeniusentertainment
      @evilgeniusentertainment  10 месяцев назад +1

      Well, that's part of why the game selection is so disappointing - so many games that ARE good missing: PITFALL, HERO, RIVER RAID, SPACE INVADERS (2600 version), MS PAC MAN, JR PAC MAN - are all killer titles for the system. I can't knock them for putting 2600 games on there (it is branded as a anniversary cab), but how about some 7800 games, or even Lynx games (OMG, TEMPEST 2000 would be the bomb)?

    • @RichieCavsRetrocade
      @RichieCavsRetrocade 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@evilgeniusentertainment Yeah I mean Iget it, they are including the games they made/own because getting other good ones like River Raid and others mean licensing fees.... However, something tells me that if you just ditch many of the existing 2600 games on there, keep the hits as there are a few on there already, but then add many other third party hits, like 2600 Greatest Hits like ones you mentioned, maybe even sprinkle some 5200 and 7800, you probably could still keep the existing cabinet price of $499 even for the added license fees :) Or make it $599, but gimme the best of the best from the system and I'd buy it and pay the extra $100 if it had like Top 50 Greatest Hits. Don't give me fifty 2600 games and part of that fifty is like Hangman, Othello, 3D Tic-Tac-Toe (and really, 3D?), etc..

    • @RichieCavsRetrocade
      @RichieCavsRetrocade 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@SoulforSale I thought Space Invaders was awesome when I saw it but I lived across the street from the arcade and played Pac-Man non-stop. At age 7 when I saw it for the 2600 at my neighbors, I just wasn't happy with it. The ghosts flickered and, Pac-Man wasn't even really rounded, he looked like he had an eye, a giant mouth and he only faced left and right even when going up and down. The main pellets weren't even rounds pellets, they were dashes he ate and they didn't even attempt to do the waka waka waka sound while eating pellets. When he eats pellets it's like, DONK DONK DONK DONK DONK and they didn't even attempt to replicate the intro music as the game just started with, Doo Dee Doo Dee. I know it's the 2600, but to me the dev team who did that game were either not very experienced or were given a month to make the game, or both! Even if rushed, how so you not make rounded pellets instead of dashes? So I think the dev team was inexperienced as well. Atari knew it would sell so they went cheap on the dev team and cashed in mega on the game name.
