It is a great song. But you don't have to dissect this song so deep because it's actually really simple. The song sounds like The Police (the band). The Police were hot new and popular around the time this song came out. I guess BOC made this song as a way to give The Police a positive shout out.
At first I was like "Huh?", then after listening, (for the 1,001st time,) I can hear that Police-esque groove in the main section, go figure

A lot of people noticed something familiar sounding about the song but many could not put their finger on it and figure it out. It took a long time for people to realize The Police influence. Finally someone asked Bruno if the song was influenced by The Police. His answer was yes.

@@michaelmcginnis6991 Never heard of it myself. Gave it a listen. It sounds like The Who doing country. My reaction: I don't hate it. Me personally, never really cared for The Who. Nothing against The Who. I respect The Who's labor they put into the OG days of brit rock. Out of all the OG Brit Rock bands (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Who) The Who is the least I cared for. I do consider The Who to be way better than Black Sabbath. I kinda think BS is a bit overrated.
Thing is, the "80's sound" as we now know it didn't fully exist in 81 so this song is more in the line of a "missing link" in the evolution and transition of music from the 70's to the 80's. These guys weren't trying to fit into the "80's sound", the were creating it.

Blue Oyster Cult was one of the most diverse bands from the 70's/80's. They could rip your face off with songs like "Dominance and Submission" then go completely in a different direction with something like "Astronomy". Then they had the more pop driven songs like this one. Just one of the most underappreciated bands and one of my top five favorite bands.
I distinctly remember my dad yelling out for the band to do Dominance/Submission at one of the BOC concerts he took me to 😁 not sure if they delivered on the tune but they put on a great show (especially being a free concert)
Oddly enough, lately I’ve come to the conclusion that BOC and Coheed and Cambria are very similar bands. When I try to explain what kind of music each band is, it doesn’t really fit into a neat box. They do whatever they want! (I mean, how do you describe “Veteran of the Psychic Wars” to someone?) And they both have the sci-fi story happening as well!

Bass on this track is cool, these guys were great at counter-position on the guitars and bass, didn't all play the same thing, the bass is doing its own melody groove

First time Joe played a Music Man StingRay on a BOC recorded track, and it sounds soooo good.
The melody on this is absolutely impossible not to like. Such a cool groove.

Ryan you nailed exactly why I love this album so much: perfect blend of 70's classic rock and 80's synthetic pop. Sole Survivor, Veteran of The Psychic Wars and Don't Turn your Back are masterpieces on this album, and they have a similar sound, though less commercial and a lot more psychedelic.

Veteran of the Psychic Wars was featured in the movie “Heavy Metal” in the same year, or maybe ‘82. Also on the “Heavy Metal” soundtrack. Scorcher.

This is one of those tunes that I never really go out of my way to listen to, but anytime I hear it, I don’t ever turn it off!
The solo by Buck Dharma on this track is sublime!! Buck and Alex Lifeson have a knack of crafting less than conventional solos that still fit the theme of the song. This is one of the reasons Buck is Jimmy Page's favourite guitarist.
As an older metal head it was always about the solo for me. The solo made me realize how awesome this song really is
This is one of those tunes that will never get old to me. My dad loved this song & it's one of those songs he would absolutely murder with his terrible singing but in true rock 'n' roll style couldn't have cared less & had the time of his life doing it.
BOC did what a lot of bands couldn’t, they transitioned musical eras but retained their identity in their music.
Bro I’ve always not cared for music reviewers/reactions but you guys have been the one exception for me personally, pretty sure I’ve watched every rock/metal review you guys have released and I’ve been a fan for like 3 years now, been on your Patreon 2 years and I love your guys reviews, you guys are completely objective/ open minded when listening to music but still say how you genuinely feel about track. @@CxOrillion “Veteran of the Physic Wars” is an awesome song, and perhaps it was not promoted as well as it should have been. Though highlighted in Heavy Metal film and soundtrack, it didn’t get sufficient airplay by FM rock stations. Being retired military, it is my go-to song on many occasions.

The only two songs you only really hear on the radio are this one, Burnin' For You and Don't Fear the Reaper. Some stations may throw in Godzilla occasionally.
Huge BOC fan here. I like their "newer" stuff plenty, but I strongly recommend checking out some of their older songs like Career of Evil or Last Days of May that often gets overlooked. These guys have been touring for so long that they have covers of their own damn songs!
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Its feels very 70's to me and like you said very relaxing and "vacation music" vibes. For me it just gives me the vibes of "the good ol' days" whatever that means.
For me this is a true example of a perfect song.
One of the cool things about B.O.C is that almost all the members sing lead on a song. So far you've listened to tunes with Buck on vocals. You need to listen to something with Eric Bloom singing. It's a different vibe. Try 'See you in black' for the 90s
Wow George that analysis comparing the chorus to Boston/Rush is absolutely spot on. I’ve been listening to this music all my life this is my favorite blue oyster cult song and I’ve never made that comparison in my head. When you said it I concurred instantly. What a great assertion based of previous musical context. So much respect to you guys. You guys don’t just listen to it, you learn from it and truly understand what its about to the point to where you are able to make musically literate comparisons. Hats off to you.

Many musical themes just pop up out of this song. Looks like Boston-Asia-Journey- style but to my opinion this is by far the best sophisticated group of the period.
Very soothing song to listen to ... at night. "I Love the Night" is a great mellow song.
Space Truckin' by Deep Purple is a great old school jam. If you're wanting to keep the 70s and 80s rock going. It rocks a lot harder with a great tone. Love the outro to it. Dude's vocals are nuts

BOC, along with The Police, had several songs that go along with that reggae cadence of hitting on the 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3, and I think that's one reason a lot of their songs were so loved. They can make somber topics feel lighter because of the groove.

Their latest album The Symbol Remains (released in 2020) is surprisingly good. First album of new material in nearly 2 decades. Buck and Eric can still rock with the best of 'em.

I was surprised that you didn't recognize any part of the song. This is probably their biggest commercial hit. It was all over the radio back in the day and is still all over classic rock radio and playlists. Plus it has been used in a lot of other media like movies, commercials, etc. But glad you dug it. "Don't Fear the Reaper" was their biggest hit (peaked at #12); this 1 was their 2nd biggest. Both were their only top 40 songs. I think in this aspect you're getting it confused w/ Reaper, especially since the Cowbell sketch on SNL took that song's popularity to a whole new level.
It's 80s rock mellowed out by a 70s groove and infused with old school reggae. I'm driving by the beach on a summer afternoon with this song. ...That's where it takes me.
Everytime I hear this I go back in my head to '82 and parking cars for a fundraiser for my civil air patrol squadron. A friend had the cassette and played it endlessly that weekend.
This song has been on my playlist since I discovered playlist. And I never skip it.

BOC is a decent rock band - very radio friendly but their style is very different from the hard rock albums that same year such as Motley Crue’s Too Fast For Love, Ozzy’s Diary of a Madman and Def Leopard’s High ‘n’ Dry.
Very true. It's so interesting to me that, as a kid of the 80's, usually kids I hung out with who were fans of the aforementioned bands also liked BOC. The MTV generation had an affinity for so many different kinds of music. I love that about us.

BOC in general is just a really good straight forward rock band. Super underrated in my opinion and this is possibly my favorite.
Always loved the melody on this song, the intro and the chorus... Definitely an early 80s rock/poppish song....

joan crawford and veteran of the psychic wars (both off this same album) are probably my favorite boc tracks, especially the live version of votpw with the added solo that didnt appear on the album.

I accidentally stumbled on the band in Phoenix az and had no idea it was them ,and I was like omg this band should be famous. They were playing in a club and it was drummer's solo,didn't realize it was actually them " who I love " till I saw concert tshirts
BOC can always write a hit when they wanted, but also keep you looking for that obscure stuff they have made so much of. Talented band that I have been lucky to see a few times.......and absolutely great live.
This song was a staple on my local classic rock radio station. Probably still is, though I stopped listening to radio years ago. I don't love it, but unlike a ton of the songs that got played to death when I was younger, I can still enjoy this.

Welcome back to the 70's and early 80's! I've missed Ya! Dire Straits 'Wild West End' reaction for this recent 63-year-old Free-Thinker! :) You see... We were coming out of the 60's and Dick Clark with the whole "It's got a beat and I can dance to it!", while we were developing discernment and nuance in our music. Groups like BOC, Dire Straits, Eagles, Journey, Rolling Stones and others from the mid 70's to the early 80's. They were finding their way and we followed! It helped us to let our hair down yet a little further. :)

The same guy, Buck Dharma, sings lead vocals, plays lead and rhythm guitar and he wrote the song. The guitar solo sounds so good because it's saying something and going somewhere the whole way through, same for the fills which are just as melodic.
Ghost is the modern day version of Blue Oyster Cult.

One of my favorite Blue Oyster Cult songs! For some reason, it also always makes me think of Cheap Trick's "The Flame", probably the fire metaphor. If you haven't reacted to "The Flame", give it a shot!
They are one of the more impressive live acts you will ever see
Now that you guys have done the two commercial songs for the band, time to dive deeper into their catalog to the stuff that the fans enjoy. This song and Reaper both written and sung by guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser. These are the two songs when I see them in concert (they’re still touring) that I know they’ll play, but i don’t care if I hear. Nothing against these two, but the rest of their catalog is much more enjoyable. Easy to pick out the people that don’t know the band, as they’re the ones that are sitting on their hands most of the show, but get up and dance to these two songs. Forms good indication of who this band is, look at their first three albums (pre-Reaper).

I encourage you to review BOC’s “Cities on Flame with Rock N Roll”. It’s a completely different vibe and harder edge. I’m a metal chick and love that song.

Hey George n Ryan, love you guys! I grew up on Long Island, NY and BOC is from Long Island, NY. BOC was HOT in the late 70's and early 80's. I graduated in 1979. To keep it real, when they played live locally in those days they would advertise on the Cameo as " Soft White Underbelly"...us locals knew who was in town. Just a friendly FYI, Love you two, Ron.
Hey Ronald, Long Island native who also grew up with BÖC and have loved them ever since a good friend introduced me to them. Saw them in concert many times, was at the famous Black and Blue concert at the Nassau Coliseum (great show, not only did I get to see my BÖC but I got to see Dio sing for Black Sabbath, what an awesome show). I saw them last in NYC at BB Kings in 2006 and 2007, although many diehard fans regard their current touring line up as bogus, I saw some great shows those two years.

Back in the day I recall this song was near perfection for a number of reasons. It helped usher rock from the 70s to the 80s. The post segregation babies were coming of age. This was a catchy commercial rock tune from a group that was very much identified (true or not) with the whole LaVey and devil worshipping intrigue going on at the time in rock music. As well it got crazy rotation at teen and college parties because people loved to dance to it.
Guitarist is Donald Rosier, nicknamed Buck Dharma. It's his hallmark to be what I would call melodically dense, he's brilliant at it. He got his nickname because his father (who has the same name) was a famous jazz sax player in New York, and when the band first started out there, they would bill as Blue Oyster Cult featuring Donald Rosier, but they kept accidentally getting booked into jazz clubs. The band was really good at those smooth integrated background vocal. They actually have several singers through the years that would sometime sub as the lead in particular songs. Their real main vocalist is actually Eric Bloom, who has a very different style, but still sounds great in my opinion. Another couple of good fairly mainstream songs of theirs would be Veteran of the Psychic Wars, which was on the Heavy Metal soundtrack album, and Black Blade. Another couple of fan faves would be Astronomy, and Sub-Human. They're all great, but those last two are really spectacular for my tastes. A hidden gem would be Tenderloin.

I have the ability to put myself in a mindset for any genre and love it so for me this perfection. It was an intricate dance which blended all the sounds of the time and the past perfectly. They toy with you on this song- swinging in and out of sounds- dancing around each expectation and feeling like a magician
Part of this album was the story of the movie Heavy Metal. Their song "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" was on this album and in the movie. There are other songs on the album that were not in the movie, but tell parts of the movies story.

Blue Oyster Cult is the single most under rated band in rock history, imo. Their albums are loaded with great songs. They are a top five band of all time for me.
I love their best songs but they have put out way too much bland material for me to have them that high, but each to his own.
