Possibly the most complicated of all the networks in the UK, especially with that tangled web of spaghetti in south London! The main reason that Southern are so keen on splitting trains is capacity in London termini. The approaches through East Croydon to Victoria and London Bridge are incredibly crowded, and so consolidating two separate services into one reduces that pressure and allows them to run more trains to the outer reaches of the network.
Hi Ashley, another great video. Couple of things you might want to update in your video are the missing Lewes to Brighton shuttle, correcting the Uckfield services to London Bridge rather than London Victoria and the fleet section to include the Uckfield line in the turbo-star section as this line is also not electrified. Keep up the great work
@@eastlancsesteem I didn't, not coz of delays but I was on a south western train from guildford and when I got to leatherhead, before I got to the station, we had to stop coz the southern train that I needed went infront and I had to wait half an hour.
Here are a number of mistakes I spotted as a regular southern user 0:47 That is actually 2 trains per hour 0:50 That is the other way round with that service. It is usually to Portsmouth Harbour, but at peak times only to Portsmouth & Southsea 1:05, that service does not serve Littlehampton whatsoever (at least when it comes to regular services, overtime ban timetables in which this happened does not count), and always avoids the branch line, with that split mentioned being totally mythological. That especially is frustrating as a regular user of Littlehampton 1:23, probably drawn wrong, but that service always terminates at Portsmouth & Southsea 2:11, Three bridges should be shown as a limited service, because out of all the times I have taken that route, it almost never stops at Three Bridges 3:02, Portsmouth Harbour should be shown as a limited service, because a couple per day do in fact continue, including nearly all services at the weekend 3:40, that in fact is London Bridge to Uckfield, and never London Victoria
1:05 That might happen in may 2024, as they could introduce a new service between Brighton and Chichester. The service will include littlehampton. Southern are doing a consultation for some changes on the west coastway line.
Three Bridges shouldn't be a limited stop station as all Southern services that head to the south coast via Horsham call here. Sorry if I sound slightly pedantic 😅
Uckfield has trains to London Bridge not Victoria. I believe the train divides between Horsham and Burnham because some stations have short platforms. I have been on that line when I was younger but not on that section of the route but I remember announcements saying that there were short platform stations & to be in in the correct train carriages.
I don't think that was the main reason the split was changed from Barnham (assuming you're not talking that place in Somerset of Buckinghamshire). I think it was probably to make the services to Portsmouth and Southampton faster by skipping the quiet stations between Barnham and Horsham. In all honesty, I can't see short platforms being the only reason to scrap a service. That therefore can save about 10 minutes on services to Portsmouth or Southampton than it would have been until 2007 (in the case of Portsmouth, probably higher in the case of Southampton which used to run via Hove) and current sunday services which split at Barnham. Technically, short platforms can still be an issue at some stations, such as Christs Hospital or Amberley.
Nah, that's not the issue, you will sometimes see 12 car trains stop at the short platforms which can only hold 6-8 cars! The reason most likely is that the service can be rather empty after horsham, but extremely busy before, so they wouldn't run a 4 car up go Vic, and there's really no need to run an 8 car out of peak between horsham & barnham! and with this, it takes the strain off of the west coasterway between barnam and brighton, and freeing up a spot on one of the limited platforms at brighton which serve the west coasterway! This can be seen with the hourly service from brighton to Portsmouth harbour/Southampton central, and the other hourly service from vic to P'mouth/S'hampton which rotate accordingly to make sure that both P'mouth and S'hampton get 2 services an hour from southern! Also, the reason it happens at horsham the majority of the time over barnham, is most likely due to Horsham not only being a bigger station, it also has less through trains then barnham, with half the platforms at horsham being used for terminating trains, and the other half being used for the splitting and joining of trains! Whilst barnham only has three platforms, which have constant through services on weekdays!
That would of been Connex South Central that used to run Class 319s to Rugby from Gatwick Airport and East Croydon and some went as far as Northampton and to Birmingham New Street via Coventry.
As Southern have got rid of the Class 313 and Class 455 with the Class 377. I do think that Southern could order new trains as well keeping some of the Class 171 Turbostars and to inherit some from ScotRail to be used on the London Bridge-Uckfield and Brighton/Hastings-Ashford International services that aren’t electrified. And Southern would of used the Class 377/2 and Class 377/7 dual voltage Electrostars on the East Croydon-Watford Junction service and in the past went as far as Milton Keynes Central. And of course Southeastern to retain the Class 377/5. Unless Southern are willing to inherit the Class 377/5 to add more extra capacity on already busy services.
I agree with you or cascade the Class 387/1 to Great Western Railway to boost their Thames Valley commuter service and the Reading-Newbury shuttle service. And Great Northern to inherit the Class 379s from storage and the Class 387/3s cascaded to Southern or Southeastern.
It's a shame you made this video now, because Southern's West Coastway is undergoing a huge timetable change with an overhaul of services to reduce splitting and overall route length.
Terrible transportation though and they don't make ticket use and purchasing easy. Why key smartcard can't be used on the tube? Why can't e-ticket be loaded to key card? Just backwards system with southern
So you never told us who they are owned by an where the money goes you’re not gonna tell the younger generation who is responsible for selling them and basically is this what you’re using to get views 🤔

no trains go from London victoria to Uckfield it is London bridge to uckfield
