His family were killed when he wasn't there and had kept his grief bottled up, to become the healer and save her he must first heal himself by opening up and letting out his grief for the first time. Brilliantly written and acted scene. I love this movie and will never understand the criticism it gets. The music is legendary.
because those criticize are non-spiritual people, I dont mean religious, there is a giant difference in performing rituals "religious" vs being connected to the source/creator/the supreme energy.
The whole movie the audience is expected to care about things we're told to care about. What do we really know about Cleveland? Not very much. We don't really see his grief, we're just told about it. There's no payoff when he does let his grief out because we're not given the opportunity to experience it with him. He just goes about his routine, and a couple of times they briefly mention his tragic past. It feels so shoehorned into the story because we barely (if at all) see how it affected him. Like yeah, he lives alone, and has a speech impediment, but was there anything else there to show the audience how much this tragedy changed him?
Many claim this movie to be one of the worst, regardless of opionions, this "healing scene" is one of the most sincere and heart felt scenes I have ever seen. This scene gave e huge respect for Giamatti as an actor!
I showed this movie to my dad, and I saw him tearing up at this part, and I told him I could change the channel, but he asked me to leave it, and he loved this movie just like me.
My late wife and I loved this movie, but as we left the theater, she said " Nine out of ten people aren't going to get what it's about." Unfortunately, she was right; but for those who do get it, they generally love it {esp. the performances}.
I did not understood this movie when it came out, I was in 9 standard in school. but I watched it on star movies in 2015, as I developed spiritually, I started to get this movie, every time I see it, I get tears.
I cannot watch this scene without getting emotional. This is one of my absolute favorite movies. Beautiful work, fantastic acting, and a powerful message. And to all you below me who agree, I wish I knew who you were so we could hang out. Too few people appreciate this film.
It's an okay movie The Scene is good but if this is your favorite movie great but the movie isn't that great, its good movie to watch more than two or three times. And if I can say that then it's a pretty decent movie, Horrible movies you can't watch more than once
I low-key love the criticism Shyamalan gets. This movie is him at his most out-there and I love it. It's like he's daring you to roll your eyes and call it cheesy. If you do that then he wins, because he doesn't want those naysayers as fans anyways. His secret is authenticity and this scene was so real it's crazy.
This scene is why I watch this movie. To see him break and let his guilt go. How he says he misses his familie's faces and how they remind him of God. Brilliant writing and acting. This movie and Signs are two overlooked and yet powerful movies. Really my two favorites from M. Night. People seem to get lost because they don't like the backdrop he set this movie in. They say Sea nymphs? How stupid. But it's not at all about Sea Nymphs. Love it! Love Signs.
Here, here. Same with the Village. At first, I was diappointed, but upon watching it a second or even third time, I realised the inner message of innocence was so utterly beautiful that eveything else suddenly fell into place. Signs is a very good film and Lady in the Water is truly made so by Paul Giamatti's acting.
Sometimes when you are on a journey, you trip and fall and you break your leg and for a long time afterwards you cannot stand up. Then someone special comes along and that person helps you stand back up. This movie was not so much about the mermaid, but about the man who she helped stand back up.
I lose it every time I watch this scene his performance is so authentic and the characters back story makes it so hard to watch. The “ I’m lost without you guys” line crushes me
Same. Just watched this again for a bit of emotional masturbation. Lol and almost broke a tear down my cheek from the same line. I picture my wife and daughter and can’t even imagine. (Both alive and well)
This scene always makes me cry. Yes, there are plenty of silly, nonsensical things in this movie, but the musical score and moving good heart of Mr. Heep always tugs at my heartstrings.
This right here, i feel, was meant to symbolize what is truly good about humanity, what Story was meant to awaken. Apart from our evils, we are also full of hope, we stand by one another, we fight together, we grieve great loss, we regret, we protect, we try again after we fail, we are persistent, we have powerful faith, we can heal with words and feelings, we want the world to be better (even if the means to get there are questionable), and we can love so entirely and purely that it can resurrect even the most broken of souls. And what Shamalan was also trying to say is that it is us forgetting these beautiful traits of ours that is leading to war and destruction. Never forget what we are, and that we humans can do so much for the world. All we have to do is try!
Yes, the true leader is one who sees the strength in the unique traits of others and gathers them together under a shared mission to create miracles and do the impossible. Love is the unique gift we all share and it is our greatest strength.. Haley you just wrote The Cookbook.
".... there is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind to man and beast, it is all a sham...." - Black Beauty, Chapter 13, last paragraph.
This movie (scene) healed me as well. I got clean and sober in 2004 but I was so numb I couldn't cry. Almost 3 years later this FINALLY did it. I must have replayed this scene at least 10x. I bawled like a baby for hours and I was so happy to do it. KUDOS Paul Giamatti and M. Night Shyamalan 👍👍😢😭💔❤
I love this movie to bits. I think it's so underrated and isn't understood at all. I have loved Paul Giamatti for ages as he's a very good solid support actor. So to see him be the main lead was a real treat and he certainly doesn't disappoint. He's just amazing and I am in awe watching him. Go Paul I say and hats off to Bryce too
I liked this film. I liked its taste of modern fairy tale, and I liked its honesty in spite of what I hold a presumptuous character by Shyamalan and the convenience of having an old crone educated in a specific story. I liked most of the roles that the characters had to take in the story. This scene is probably one of the best I've ever seen in my life. It's of course a matter of direction and music, but mainly thanks to Paul Giamatti's absurdly good acting. D.R.
Call me mindless if you want, but this movie is terrible. We barely know anything about any of the characters, they exposition dump every single thing, and the plot in general is just goofy. M Night was rightfully eviscerated for this turd.
I went to see this with my dad, I adored The Village (despite not "getting it" at first; I went "okay but what if the monsters WERE real?!" lmao) and I enjoyed this a lot, I gelled with the vibe of the movie and barbs against movie critics and the lore. Then it was the day before Anzac Day in 2007 and I tried to commit suicide. Anzac Day, after my dad calling everyone he could to get help for me, my parents and I watched this movie and it all clicked. Because of that, this movie means the absolute fucking world. Being reassured you have purpose the day after you did something based on the belief you didn't...that's real movie magic. Thank you, Night.
I love that in this movie noone knows who he is. It is like our life. We also are not told which person we are or what role we have to play. But we have gifts from God and we will become who he wants us to be by using them.
This movie is so good... and the music compliments it perfectly... it makes you cry, laugh, and be tense in one movie... such a shame it went under the radar
This is very sincere scene. Best of the movie. Paul G does some of his finest acting here. It's hard not to feel for him and the pain he is going through.
I legit watched this movie as a child and it inspired so much imagination for me for years to come .whenever I think of this movie it brings up core childhood memories of mine. This movie spoke to my spirit and even so young (although I may not have understood everything ) I certainly understood how it made me feel. An ethereal effect , combining fantasy with reality And speaking about the interconnected essence of every human being
I guess we finally all found each other. Should we start a Facebook group or an annual picnic? This is such a good movie. I never understood why people were so critical about it. My wife and I saw it at the theaters and immediately loved it. Amazing acting and soundtrack. I feel like it was just people on the bandwagon to hate of M Knight and it wasn't trendy to like him. But Paul G and the crew killed it. So where should we hold our annual meeting?
For all the problems I have with this movie, this scene really is touching. It's a make-it or break-it scene, where with a lesser actor, it would not have packed anywhere near the emotional punch that it does with Giamatti. His delivery has so much raw emotion, you can really put yourself in this character's shoes. You can feel his pain, his anger, his devastation-over his family's death and not being there to protect them. Five stars to Giamatti. Wish the rest of the movie were this good...
So emotional..it always brings tears to my eyes. 'Giamatti' is incredible & so is the whole movie + actors. This movie got "butchered" by most film critics/cynics. Go see it with a simple open heart?..it will say many 'positive' things about human nature, rather than the negatives we are force fed 24/7. A great film.
My eyes well up everytime, I watch this scene.😢😰 I come here if I feel down & I let Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti), James Newton Howard & M.Night Shyamalan comfort me..
As a husband and a parent, I can’t watch this and not tear up. Brilliant acting, and incredible score! Reminds me of God. If only Hollywood would do more of this.

I wish someone would get the whole movie and upload it. I saw this movie a few years ago and I absolutely loved it!!! I love all of M. Night Shyamalan's movies. U must have an open heart/mind to truly understand. PLEASE...PLEASE someone upload. :D
Interesting that Guillermo Del Toro is doing a similar film called 'The Shape of Water' (albeit set in cold war USA). There's a bit of similarity between him and M Night in that he likes to experiment in his original films.
I don’t care what anyone says, M. Night Shyamalan is an amazing director and created beautiful art. How can anyone who made “The 6th Sense”, “Unbreakable”, “Signs” and “The Village” be considered one of the worst directors of all time. It makes no sense.
in response to OMK s question: Story's hair is getting paler because she is dying. beings from other realms and dimensions, dont last long in the human world. they die even faster if their is an entity constantly trying to kill them and with poison. beings will also die fater in our world if they use a lot of magic.

Agreed brother, such a touching scene, and the music I have no words to describe how beautiful it is but somehow it both breaks me and elevates me.

I loved this weird movie. It hit me in a spot I didnt think it would.

SwayneIII this film is pure trash, but Giamatti always brings his A game and he could move me during this terribly told story ❤️
uhuhuh1966 that’s an interesting way to put it but I totally agree 😂 couldn’t have worded it better
@@uhuhuh1966 mgk is that you???
Anyone who does not like this movie is inherently evil. This is the word of walt.
It is a beautiful scene and definitely heart felt.
Such an underrated movie!
isaac gomez criminally overrated and the music is divine
Agreed
Yes it is. I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves this movie.
@@benthejrporteryou are not alone. This is my fav ever sz
I always tear up at this scene. It's so moving and you feel so sorry for Cleveland. Very underrated film.
FreQuenczy Me too lol. Nothing wrong with having a heart. Giamatti performs this beautifully.
Good talk.
I showed this movie to my dad, and I saw him tearing up at this part, and I told him I could change the channel, but he asked me to leave it, and he loved this movie just like me.
Beautiful and powerful movie
He was a doctor.
He was the healer the whole time.
One of the most moving scenes ever. I love this film.
He was able to heal her when he healed himself. This is one beautiful movie
The scene was epic. The movie was ahead of it's time. Never felt a man's emotion more than this scene here. Very well written more so portrayed.
My late wife and I loved this movie, but as we left the theater, she said " Nine out of ten people aren't going to get what it's about." Unfortunately, she was right; but for those who do get it, they generally love it {esp. the performances}.
CatmanDude - many of us “get it”
Don’t worry
Sending blessings your way
This is one of my favorite movies. Your wife was definitely right, but thankfully, there are some of us who get it. :) Blessings.
I'm sorry for your loss. She was right. Most people don't get it. Very good movie
Happily in the 10%

Not a mermaid/ she's a water nymph
The best representation of love in any movie.
this scene always has me in tears. i don't know why people diss this movie. it is very original and all of the cast is stellar

His face during "I think she might be an angel". Very fine acting from Paul.
Paul Giamatti is so awesome! Such a great scene!
Criminally underrated fantasy masterpiece

People who don't like this movie certainly cannot find magic and appeal in small things and everyday life.
Beautiful. Cleavland receiving inner healing and Story receiving physical healing. Absolute tear factory.
This is very sincere scene. Best of the movie. Paul G does some of his finest acting here. It's hard not to feel for him and the pain he is going through.
best acting paul giamatti has ever done. thank you

beautiful scene with a beautiful performance by Paul
He delivered this line so well.
the best scene of the movie.
a beautiful story
What a beautiful story…m knight crushed it on this one
does this hit anybody else as hard in the Feels as me?

Couldn't care less what people think but this is one of Nights best films. So much feelings and emotions.
Tears every time. I've gotten so soft in my old age. Great scene!
Shyamalan made my two favorite movies of all time: Unbreakable and Lady in the Water.
It's beautiful, because she's only a synonym for what is happening.
i always cry in this scene

I still love this movie. 2023
I love this movie what a magnificant story and it just so happens my Grandpa Verne knew it pretty good!!!!😍🤣✨️😭😇😇😁💕♻️
This is his best movie imo
Harry T yep. Giamatti KILLED it.
My eyes well up everytime, I watch this scene.😢😰

Such an underrated movie.
Most underrated film ever
As a husband and a parent, I can’t watch this and not tear up. Brilliant acting, and incredible score! Reminds me of God. If only Hollywood would do more of this.
I can’t say all the criticisms of this movie are wrong, but Paul Giamatti nailed it in this scene and it gets me every time I watch it.
I love this movie, and this scene still moves me.
This is the movie scene that speaks the most to me. I think it is incredibly moving. This movie and this scene doesn't get enough credit.
I actually like how most people dislike this film. Even real-life viewers don't get the plot or listen, just like the characters in the movie.
It just really sets a tone, do you know what I mean?
I don’t care what anyone says. To me. This is one of the most beautiful movies ever made
Its a healing for her n for him
I so love this film, especially its simplicity... but the content is really good.
This scene made me love him as an actor. Absolute brilliant movie
I love this movie ❤ i dunno why but i love watching it ❤
I recall not feeling this film had any “originality” to it when I first saw it. And over the years it has grown on me and this scene, in THIS story overwhelms me every time I experience it.
Our collective story, is not important because it’s “original” but because we all share in it together, and our every voice, action or inaction, good deed or bad is felt and shared between us… or something.
I really liked this movie but I didn't think it was one of his best. However this scene is THE reason I watch this movie. I greatly respect Giamatti as an actor after watching this is scene and this movie.
I feel bad for all the critics and naysayers who didn't catch the messages of this powerful fairy tale.
Loves this scene great movie
This film cemented Giamatti as my favourite actor. This scene was the best in the movie.
This movie is a fairytale for us grown ups.
Great underrated scene and movie. Very moving.
For the longest time, until last night, I finally realized he was talking about his family. 🤦
That pretty describes my feelings and sorrow for my fathers early death ( I'm sorry i couldnt protect you, i am always gonna regret just not being there, gonna miss his face, so lost without him ) RIP dad ,23/06/2003
another GREAT scene

i really love this film and this scene is very emotional.
I love the moments before this clips starts when everyone realizes he’s the guy.

i love this movie
Ok i need to watch this again soon.
Paul Giamatti can still do good things in horrible movies. Sad to see nobody will see it or try to forget it (Like me)
I love this movie so much I just love it
If only for this scene I like this movie, made me cry
i cry this móvie so much 😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
