- I bought this CX500 in July 2022. It’s sat in a garage since 1995! 32’000 mikes. Actually in quite good condition. I’m thinking it needs a good overhaul which I’m going to be doing through August and filing it all. The work will be published through August 2022 in short parts of approximately 20 min, and then I’m hoping to eventually film me riding it. Hope you watch and enjoy. Big thanks to all who watch. 😃
Good solid bike in their day.
Very popular with motorcycle couriers
I had a 1978 in that exact color! In fact, it was my first motorcycle. Probably the best motorcycle I've ever owned. o7
Easy with the hammer onto aluminium, try a wooden block if you don't have a mallet, and you you need a bigger table.
THANK YOU for showing how to take apart and cleaning the Carb. I was just given a 1983 XL 185S and it needs a lot of TLC before I can try to start it! I have a clean title and it's MINE to refurbish! Great video!
Thanks a lot. Good luck with it
love the cx
Looks like the algorithm is appreciating your efforts

My Dad bought a second hand one in 1980 and I bought it off him in 1982. First proper motorcycle I ever had. I loved that bike. Traded it in after a couple of years for a VT500. Wish I had kept the CX. I can still remember the feel and the sound of it. Watching you has given me the urge to get another one. Sadly it would cost me more than the £300 I paid back in 1982.
I paid £300 for this one but was a stroke of luck
They are going for serious money today, I had a 79 model back in the day. The Irish police also used them for a few years.
I was shocked when i saw one advertise3d for £3000 about 10 years ago,now many are nearer £10000 for a really good one 😲
i wonder what planet these people are on
Wow!!😊 Nice Bike, For Sure!!😊
One of the best, if not the best resto's on youtube
Ahh thank you 😊
@@tkbikes1 anything else lined up?
@@ghickledperkin3559 just the one I’ve just put on yesterday. Honda XL185. Got a Honda C70 needing work but could be a while yet that one 👌
@@tkbikes1 nice, will have a watch now
Push rod rocker valve V twin. Bit like a Moto Guzzi set up.
Shaft driven with a grease fitting for shaft support bearing.
Yes very similar to a Guzzi
Bit late on this one Tim but I had 3 CXs in the past and loved them all .One was featured in 1992 as a very early ' Z ' model on a ' 78 ' S ' plate .Always regretted lettting it go but it is still out there .A month ago I was offered a one-owner identical red ' Z ' '78 model on an ' S' plate , unused sine 1987 with just 3, 202 miles .Despite its dirty but incredibly good order , the engine is seized through standing .Cannot wait to get it back on the road hopefully !.
Check it’s not the starter motor. Thought mine was seized but it was just the starter motor 😃 good luck with it
@@tkbikes1 Thanks so much for the information - I will !.
Great series of videos, just come across them. Soda blaster is a great idea. Wonder if my spray gun attachment for my compressor would work as a small soda blaster😊
Thanks a lot. Glad you enjoyed. I’m not sure but easy enough to try if you have bicarbonate of soda. The one I’ve got was only about £25 from eBay if it doesn’t.
Hi had a go no of this of a m8 in 92 and had to bub it to good time
I love these types of videos. I saw your post on the FB group. Good luck.
Thanks for watching glad you like 👌
I had 4 cx500's in the 80s and 90s and did a lot of work on them, but ffs dont hammer on those aluminium lugs that those long screws on the starter motor pass through, you were lucky not to break them off.
Reverse comstar wheels. Looking forward to part two.
Ahh thanks. Should be published this week and hopefully will be a runner 👌
Subscribed Cheers 🍻
Thanks a lot 👌
my guess, if you want to feed it trough the air intake, maybe better not choke?
For sal
Gone now
It Tried !!
You see? Yeah??
Mein cx 500 ist von 83 und läuft und läuft jeden Tag zur Arbeit
The CDI;s and stators used to clag out
other than that they were bomb proof.
@@paulp1008 crankshaft failures
@@margarita8442 after big miles mate though !
Doesnt the starter motor need to be earthed before it will work?
Yes it does it bolts to the engine which earths it. Then it only needs one positive wire to crank it
More easy start lol
Woh. Brand new to your channel but... bejeebus, what is that gnarly scar on your arm? What happened to you?
I got knocked off a fazer 1000 in shorts and t shirt 🤦♂️ only cuts and bruises luckily. Wearing my gear in future 🤦♂️
Whats the story with the scrapes on your arms?
I was in a motorcycle accident
Is that right you said a little bit of diesel in the cylinder head ?
Yes that what I tried because I thought it was seized but it wasn’t.
@@tkbikes1 why not a little petrol in there instead of diesel ?
@@vflynn581 meant to be more penetrating and does have added lubricant. It sometimes free off seized cylinders but does need at least a few days to soak really
@@tkbikes1 ohh righto thanks for the explanation your mechanical knowledge is unreal Tim thanks for sharing I’m learning a lot I’m not very good when it comes to working on the bike but I’m willing to learn and give it a go and i’m acquiring a few tools on the way lol
@@vflynn581 yeah more tools tge better really, even 3 of one thing as most of the time they disappear 😂 thanks for watching and glad to be of help
You need a bigger hammer Tim, just saying. 😄
I know yeah I probably hit it a bit hard. Had a bit of stick from other comments for swinging hammers 😂
Where did you get 32,000 miles from? The odometer has less the 2000 miles whiike the trip odometer has 32 miles
I wish it was 2000. Maybe sun was on it. It definitely says 32’000
31’996 to be precise
@@tkbikes1 You can swap it for mine with 78KMS on the clock, genuine too.
It does look like it was kept inside the titanic tho.
