Great bike. I was given one by a friend because I was happy to do some wrenching back in the day. Mine had been to a garage numerous times and they were unable to start it. Did all the normal things, but suddenly realised that the battery was really hot. There wasn't any liquid in the battery and it was shorting straight through the battery. New battery and away she went. They are prone to timing chain tensioner problems and if ignored the chain eat its way right through the case. Had a MX125 before this, and a Honda RD250D. afterwards I had a MZ250 for knocking around to work, and then a BMW K1000RS - fab bike, did over 45,000 miles on her, and took her to Norway. Reactions have slowed too much now.
I was a despatch rider from 1987-1990 and rode a black cx500 just like this with the 2 into1 motad exhaust, the sound of this bike just brings a smile to my face. I rode that bike flat out at 110 mph most days and it just kept going month after month after month . Wee bike earned me a wage and never let me down. Well the alternator went and that’s a split the engine job so we parted company at that point lol
From my recollection, they were more hated than loved , affectionately named the "maggot" Ran 3 of these couriering, tbh I liked them for there durability, crashed, smashed and abused..just kept going, nice to see an original one that's hasn't had the cafe racer treatment
@@tkbikes1 Just the good old expression we used to say in Leeds. Now its "grand is that" up here in Ashington. Now off into the shed to make Dolls Houses and Shops.
I bought one of the first CX500 s from Hartwells in Oxford, 1978. Road it into the ground via France, Germany and most pubs in England. Loved it. Tappits were noisy ...Honda Japan subsequently fixed it in following models. All in all, one of favourite motorcycles.
Just started watching your videos 👍 great stuff down to earth honest mechanics , used to laugh at the cx 500 s in our youth ! But now I like the look of them a decent Honda from the good days of biking .👍
Hi - stumbled onto your channel today and just finished watching your 4 vids on this CX. What a great bike they always were and its brilliant to see a machine from "yesteryear" getting a new lease of life. I'm ashamed to say when I started watching video 1 on the CX I was rather judgemental and thought ah no another bodgit merchant ( it was the starter motor in the vice jaws metal to metal and being bashed around...) How wrong was I ! Great channel no pointless swearing, just good honest mechaniching which anyone could follow and maybe bring their own ageing classic back to useable service. Theres just something about seeing old machinery being given a new lease of life.... Well done 👍 It just needs regular use now and should last as long as petrol is available.... incredible. The Japanese certainly know how to put bikes together. King and Queen seats ha ha brings back the memories 😄
Ahh brilliant. Thanks for watching my video. Yeah I have had a bit of hassle in comments for my hammer activities. 😂 But TBH I did think I was going to have to replace it anyway. I was pleased to get it to work. Yes I do try to give out tips to my watches. It was a lucky find. Yes the Japanese are brilliant aren’t they. The bikes gone now and fetched a very good price. Move on to the next project. Thanks a lot and all the best. 😀
I just bought an ‘81 (today), thanks for the video I don’t feel there’s anything I can’t have a go at. Loved the scooters too. I’m also restoring an ‘84 GPz 1100. Cheers, Marc
The Honda Kettle! Had one in 1997. The only problem I had with it was a leaking water pump housing. Had the engine out so many times but so easy to do.
Had one for despatch riding in the 80s. The only issue was the mechanical seal. When they go you get oil and water mixing and it's an engine out job to replace something really small. It's unlikely to bother low mileage riders but the seal was a pain in the arse to replace for professional riders as it was £100 in labour back then.
Absolutely another gem Tim what a great project it’s going to be spring here in Perth Australia and I’ll be getting my shadow out of the shed and getting out can’t wait fairdinkum I just can’t make my mind up who is the most gorgeous the CX500 or Suzie they are both so hot Thanks again Tim really enjoyed that little project fantastic mate
I really wish Honda still made something like the CX500. I just want something classic looking that's practical and simple to run and maintain, the closest was probably the NC750S whilst they still made it but it has awkward edgy 2010s styling. Perhaps the CL500 is the closest now but it's a bit dinky.
I owned roughly 30 of these use to buy and sell spares for the couriers but a balance box and a set of pipes make look and run better Motad s were only a quick fix
Suzy is rocking it all the way!
That's a sweet little bike and them old Hondas were built to last
You have a very pretty wife, man. And it’s beautiful she shares your passion. 👍🏻 Ride safe, folks!
Susie is 🔥
Oh Suzie!
Nice to see a classic breathing again, good work!
Susie looks fit
Awesome vlog, thoroughly enjoyed all 4 episodes.
Fair play..
You are punching above your weight, with the
delightful Suzy. Good luck, ride safe.
Ha ha thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed 👍😃

I Was amazed to see a Honda 400-4. Back in 1977-9 I had a Blue one. I loved that bike, I wish I had it today It ran so smoothly.
Thanks for all 3 great videos. You make it very enjoyable to watch.

Greeting from New Mexico USA ! Enjoyed all four vids ! I bought an 81 Custom, Basket case three years ago restored it, still my summer daily driver.
Lovely bike and lovely wife! 👍 What more can you wish for?
Ahhh thank you 😊
Tim, I truly enjoyed your CX500 story
Glad you enjoyed it
Flippin Heck, reminds me of growing up in Leeds.
How is that Peter?

I enjoyed the video, thanks !

That’s great thanks for watching
Beatiful bike. A timeless piece. Engine sounds cool, too. Runs like clockwork. Well done!

Yeah I’ve heard that a few times. No water problems with this one 👌
beautiful
Had a cx 500 when i was 18 , same colour scheme and year really fond memories of these and they sound great . Love what you've done with the bike

@@tkbikes1 nice one 👍
You look very proud of your project bike, I am glad you two are enjoying it, do people get close and ask questions about the bike?
Yes the CX drew a crowd yesterday. Lots of people come straight over talking
@@tkbikes1 that is part of the process of restoring or modify a motorcycle 👍🏻
@@carlosgooglemaps94 yes that’s the moment of joy after riding the machine 👌😃
I bought a 1980 new in 1983, and I still have it! Did you ever replace those old tires?
No I didn’t replace. It’s sold now
Had 1 for 10yrs only covered 36k gutted when i sold it
Nice bike, just needs proper Honda downpipes that don't go blue.
Yeah they were blue when I got it. Probably from the last owner running it to lean with blocked carburettors at a guess
Let it bloody idle man ffs
Why the bloody hell do you rev the shit out of when it's cold and not let it idle , you should get a Harley
