Mono no aware (物の哀れ?), literally "the pathos of things", and also translated as "an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera", is a Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence (無常 mujō?), or transience of things, and both a transient gentle sadness (or wistfulness) at their passing as well as a longer, deeper gentle sadness about this state being the reality of life.

Simple As This Simple description of japanese term "Mono no aware": sadness you feel when you realise that beautiful things you see are not forever, but will vanish soon. That things will eventually change. That "to live" means "to lose."

wow not even knowing that translation it's how I have felt every time I listen to this track.
I always picture two loved ones having to part ways as one finds out one can't stay anymore. I love Hammock and this is one of my favorite song of theirs for sure.

Mystical Gaming I feel exactly the same as you!! I am a big fan of Hammock and this is one of my favourites of theirs, possibly my number one favourite. And, like you, I strongly felt the "transient gentle sadness" before knowing the translation of the name of the song. It's such a sad, biittersweet song, isn't it?

    • @MysticalGaming
      @MysticalGaming 9 лет назад +6

kathryn mathews I agree. I always feel sad when listening to it but in a good way if that makes any sense at all. I never feel unsatisfied after listening too it like there is always hope afterward. I'd say one of my other favorite songs from then is 'All Is Dream and Everything Is Real' it's just so moving.
It's honestly hard to put Hammock's music into words since it's just so pure and good. The feelings it evokes is beyond describing for me at times. It's made me appreciate even the simplest things in life and to always be content.

a boy is walking through a grey, dead forest. When out of nowhere, he comes across a waterfall, but the water isn't falling. it instead is flowing upward, into the sky. the boy touches the water, and slowly starts to drift. He drifts up, away from earth, away from life. Into the light...
that's at least what I think of when I hear this masterpiece :')

If tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not here to see,
    If the sun should rise you find your eyes all filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say.
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you
And each time that you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand.
He said my place was ready, in heaven far above
And that I’d have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But as I turned and walked away a tear fell from my eye.
For all my life I’d always thought, I didn’t want to die.
I had so much to live for, so much left yet to do.
It seemed almost impossible that I was leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays the good ones and the bad.
I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had.
If I could relive yesterday, just even for a while,
I’d say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realized that this could never be,
For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.
When I thought of worldly things I might miss come tomorrow
I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow.
When I walked through heavens gates I felt so much at home.
God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne
He said, “This is eternity and all I’ve promised you”
Today your life on earth has passed but here life starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last
And since each day is the same there’s no longing for the past.
You have been so faithful so trusting and so true.
Though there were times you did some things you knew you shouldn’t do.
You have been forgiven and now at last you’re free.
So won’t you come and take my hand and share my life with me?
So when tomorrow starts with out me don’t think we’re far apart,
For every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart.
    Author: David Romano

best soundtrack i ever listened to in my entire life.
all its feelings hit me hard when i listen to it with headphones in the bus. i don't know why exactly at that moment. Maybe because i'd be watching people passing by and thinking many things like how my life coincidence with theirs, or like if i was late 5 minutes would all the future be the same, or if their life is as complex as mines, or how much our interests may vary, or i probably would be feeling so baffled by the way they probably have dreams and fears and billions of stories to tell.
I really love this soundtrack, regardless of the amazing video and story displayed behind it, it has its own story in my mind.

I don't usually mind ads on RUclips videos, since I know that that's how it stays afloat and I really enjoy the site, but I just hate them when they're between things like Hammock songs. The beautiful, almost transient or incorporeal sounds of the songs, along with Altobelli's excellent videos, lull me into a great state, and then a little Lynx ad or whatever brings back the crappy, shallow commercialist parts of the world (which are important to keep the world running, I know, but I'd rather not have to focus on them in between Hammock songs).

    • @NikolaFilajdic
      @NikolaFilajdic 11 лет назад +3

Just when I was starting to take for granted my free ad-blocker-
Are they [Intrusive advertisements- disruptive in every sense of the word] 'actually' "important to keep the world running?" The "spirit of our time" would have us believe all this senseless commercialism is of vital importance to 'the system;' what of a less corrupt alternative, though? The reign of Capitalism will draw to an end just as soon as it has exhausted the last of its historical energy, and with it the concomitant, detrimental indignities of intrinsic obsolescence, materialism, consumerism et cetera (Damned if I stop there- the list goes on and on). Support not that which you know to be hindering humanity's transcendence.

    • @FeederForLife
      @FeederForLife 11 лет назад

      Nikola Filajdic
How do you actually imagine this commercialism-free society of yours working? What would it really be like?
The following post is long, and goes quite deep into economics for a RUclips comment on a music video, so for most people it's not worth reading further. However, I really think it's important to argue against what Nikola said and to try to reduce the amount of people using ad-blockers on sites like RUclips.
People - including musicians - need to eat. However, musicians do not make food. Hence, musicians must be supported by the farmers and similar. This could be done directly; farmers could produce the food and give it to musicians directly in exchange for the entertainment/transcendence that the musician's music gives the farmer. This is called the barter system, and it has now been replaced to a very large extent by a system with money as an intermediary since that is far more efficient.
In any case, the musicians must be supported somehow or they will die, and it is unrealistic to expect society to simply pay them or feed them, particularly because there are far more people who'd like to be musicians than there is need/demand for musicians. Obviously this a big simplification of our very complex, interconnected society/economy (since there are loads of other factors apart from music and food, such as medical care and luxury goods), but the basics pretty much hold, and mean that musicians need to actually get money somehow, and one small part of how this happens is through there being ads on their RUclips videos.
And alternative would be for the musicians to also produce food themselves, but that could be a waste of their particular talents and time, or they could simply be bad at that sort of thing, and anyway there are economies of scale and benefits of specialization, so it's generally better for individuals to not try to be completely self-supported, and to instead focus more on certain aspects of things and support other people in these aspects, and to in return be supported in other aspects by other people (that's pretty obvious and foundational to society and to economics). This is particularly obvious when you bear in mind that the musician wouldn't just have to be a farmer too to support themselves completely without some money or bartering needing to be involved; they would also have to manufacture their own guitars/keyboards, cure their own illness, program their own music-making-softwares, invent+construct their own computers, and even do all the research required to take them from a caveman's understanding to the modern physics (discovered by thousands of years of scientists) require to design computers. That's clearly ridiculous, so it's better if the musician focuses primarily on music, creating a "product" that others enjoy, and in return those others give the musician what they have focused on, and money makes this system more efficient, though also more complicated.
I'm not advocating pure or unhindered capitalism (which has never actually existed anywhere anyway; there's always been some degree of non-monetary transactions and non-capitalistic altruism and stuff), nor am I saying our current system is anything like perfect.
However, not watching ads on RUclips videos from good musicians does not help to increase humanity's transcendence (this is a bit of an odd term to use here, but I'll use it anyway to more directly counter your point); it is actually a very selfish thing to do. It increases the transcendence of the specific individuals who don't have to watch the ads - that is true. However, it means that the site - RUclips, in this case - and the musician - Hammock, in this case - both make less money. Hammock has to spend time to make this music, and RUclips has to spend money running servers. If they don't get something in return, they will be motivated to do other things with their time, or they will simply be unable to continue (many musicians just have to go back to do "normal" jobs and have to give up their careers in music since they don't have time to do both and they weren't making enough money from music to support themselves or their families). I know there are other sources of income for musicians, but this is one part of it, and also RUclips and similar sites are an important part of the process so they have to be supported as well.
Just you not watching ads doesn't make a significant dent in the revenues of Hammock or of RUclips. However, if everyone acted as you do then RUclips would be completely forced to close - as would many other great sites - and Hammock would probably have to spent more time doing "normal" jobs, and if people only ever watched their RUclips videos without ads and pirated their music then they'd be forced to do other jobs. Really, you're essentially cheating; leaching off other people's contributions; the only reason that you can get what you want slightly better than how other people get it is because the other people make the sacrifice of watching the ads to keep the system working and the servers running.
I'm not an economist or a sociologist, and this is just a RUclips comment, so feel free to do more research or thinking of your own, but please do think about what would happen if everyone turned on ad-blocker, and please stop advocating for people to do that, at least. I don't even really ask that you yourself turn it off, but just don't tell others to turn it on without at least thinking of the consequences.
Some stuff certainly needs to be changed, but it would be foolish to just do away with everything that is flawed without thought for what we'd be left with without it. It's actually pretty easy to point out flaws with the present state of something (I could write a thousand essays about what's wrong with society, even as I defend commercialism to the limited extent that I do in this comment), but often pretty damn hard to propose a solution or a better state or a way to actually reach a better state, so I again put to you these two questions:
How do you actually imagine this commercialism-free society of yours working? What would it really be like?

    Imagine
Your walking through an open field. There's no end the endless amounts of flourishing green. You run your hands along the soft blades, closing your eyes as you gently tug off a few strands and bring them up to your nose. Inhaling the scent as nostalgia and childhood memories float through your mind. It suddenly turns night. You feel as though your heart has stopped. You lay down on the ground gently, resting your head against the pillow like surface. The last thing you see before your drift into the hard and darkening thoughts of reality are the millions of stars surrounding your vision. You shut your eyes, leaving everything you've ever wanted and dreamed about behind.
This is my interpretation of it

Hammock always touches my soul. Every single song does it. These sounds are like universe or band's members can feel the universe's soul and put it in their songs. Very emotional and relaxing. That's what real music is all about. Truly amazing! And I love people who understands this kind of music.

My girlfriend and I saw Hammock play in a church in Philadelphia years ago. Caught in traffic during the long drive, we arrived right as Hammock finished setup. We took a seat quietly and absorbed the atmosphere as little green stars swirled around the room and ghostly projections danced on the walls. And then they played this song. I'll never forget it; how I held my girl in my arms and was choking back tears. It was one of the most beautiful moments in my entire life and to this day I miss it.

Even though we may never know why things are happening the way they are, what the purpose of life is, why are we here, whether time-travel will ever become a reality and most importantly where does all of everything (planets, spirits, people, Universe, life.. etc) that there is come from, this song reminds me that I have to appreciate all that there is, explore as much as I can and stay REALLY happy, because I'm going to die one day.

Death is also beautiful when you have hope to hold on to and acceptance of the end. I think the point of this video is to show how even the childlike memories and feelings we have can be a sad reminder of simpler things in a now complex world, but that we can cherish and feel loved by right until your final moments. Love the things you have lost, and know that the losing is what makes them prescious.

Mono no aware (物の哀れ?), literally "the pathos of things", also translated as "an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera", is a Japanese term used to describe the awareness of impermanence (無常 mujō?), or the transience of things, and a gentle sadness (or wistfulness) at their passing. Wow... That's amazing...

As if I'm studying this right now...
Mono no Aware (もののあわれ) : pathos of things, empathy towards things. It's a Japanese term to describe the awareness of impermanence (a very Buddhist influence, impermanence), and therefore, its beauty. "Awareness of the transience of all things heightens appreciation of their beauty, and evokes a gentle sadness at their passing." ..........Hence all the handprints.
So basically... Everything is perfect. This song, the title, the video.. ahh my heart hurts.

The video combined with the melody really captures the poetry of memory. This is like taking the memory that someone is most fond of directly from his own brain, and putting it on film, exactly how that person reminiscence these moments in his head.
Brilliant. Never seen and heard anything like it on this level. This beauty can easily sweep many of current 3-hour long films and short films easily in my list, placing it in one of the best, in art, and in humanly sense.

This song reminds me of the fall, and overcast skies. Big gray clouds, and empty heart. Orange leaves, brown grass, fat white snowflakes on my nose and in my hair. The smell of the barn, of the hay, and of the horses. Riding bareback in the cold, snow beginning to fall. Faded red barn, wet tire swing, old tree branches like outstretched claws. Rosy cheeks, soft yellow light, and distant wishful memories of gentle kisses. First date, first school dance. Her smile, her freckles, those soft copper eyelashes that are so much longer than mine.
Her smell her warmth against the cold, eyes opening for the first time. Fluttering heart, knotted stomach, desperately craving a hug, her ridiculous plaid shirt, remembering how good she looks in a dress. Bedhead hair, nervous giggles, sleepy head in her lap. Soft voice, hearing her sing, knowing she won't ever feel the same way about you. Timid care-taking, worrying over every soft sniffle. Her sneezing fits, and red nose, covering up freckles. Partner dances, getting lost in the music, wanting her lips on yours. Fall day. Filtered light and blue sky through yellow leaves. Brown leaves crunching under shoes. Her forearms when she rolls up her dress. Soft guitar, crying at her senior graduation . Hug her tightly like you'll never let go. Last cab ride, last sight of her, waving goodbye.College girl going off to explore...
    And shit like that
