Mono no aware (物の哀れ?), literally "the pathos of things", and also translated as "an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera", is a Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence (無常 mujō?), or transience of things, and both a transient gentle sadness (or wistfulness) at their passing as well as a longer, deeper gentle sadness about this state being the reality of life.

my interpretation of this video : the loneliness, the emptiness, the sadness, the hopeless, the cold, the lost childhood, the innocence. I really like this music video! the director made it perfectly, and the sound is good. they both collaborate perfectly.
Makes much sense, it is a combination of those sensations along with the joy of the memories, the term Mono No Aware is a japanese term to define the awareness of impertinence, or the transience of things, of which a sense of gentle sadness remains, a longing for what's been. I believe that the video is a representation of that, the girl went to her childhood home and went to play to the playground in which she used to play, and revived joyful memories, but then she went back to her former home, and it was just different: it was quiet, empty, lonely and cold, a place that once was her beloved and lively home, and the place in which her treasured memories of childhood happiness and innocence are stored. The video and the music indeed are made and merged perfectly the way they are.

best soundtrack i ever listened to in my entire life. all its feelings hit me hard when i listen to it with headphones in the bus. i don't know why exactly at that moment. Maybe because i'd be watching people passing by and thinking many things like how my life coincidence with theirs, or like if i was late 5 minutes would all the future be the same, or if their life is as complex as mines, or how much our interests may vary, or i probably would be feeling so baffled by the way they probably have dreams and fears and billions of stories to tell. I really love this soundtrack, regardless of the amazing video and story displayed behind it, it has its own story in my mind.
I always think about that every time I go out! sometimes my friends upset me for not paying attention, but I'm actually watching the people. It is that each of the unknown has a hidden universe, and each is unique (:
This piece truly captures “Mono no Aware”- and Japanese culture described this human emotion brilliantly all that is missing is the cherry blossoms, that bloom beautifully then fade quickly-like the seasons of our lives
I don't usually mind ads on RUclips videos, since I know that that's how it stays afloat and I really enjoy the site, but I just hate them when they're between things like Hammock songs. The beautiful, almost transient or incorporeal sounds of the songs, along with Altobelli's excellent videos, lull me into a great state, and then a little Lynx ad or whatever brings back the crappy, shallow commercialist parts of the world (which are important to keep the world running, I know, but I'd rather not have to focus on them in between Hammock songs).
Just when I was starting to take for granted my free ad-blocker- Are they [Intrusive advertisements- disruptive in every sense of the word] 'actually' "important to keep the world running?" The "spirit of our time" would have us believe all this senseless commercialism is of vital importance to 'the system;' what of a less corrupt alternative, though? The reign of Capitalism will draw to an end just as soon as it has exhausted the last of its historical energy, and with it the concomitant, detrimental indignities of intrinsic obsolescence, materialism, consumerism et cetera (Damned if I stop there- the list goes on and on). Support not that which you know to be hindering humanity's transcendence.
Nikola Filajdic How do you actually imagine this commercialism-free society of yours working? What would it really be like? The following post is long, and goes quite deep into economics for a RUclips comment on a music video, so for most people it's not worth reading further. However, I really think it's important to argue against what Nikola said and to try to reduce the amount of people using ad-blockers on sites like RUclips. People - including musicians - need to eat. However, musicians do not make food. Hence, musicians must be supported by the farmers and similar. This could be done directly; farmers could produce the food and give it to musicians directly in exchange for the entertainment/transcendence that the musician's music gives the farmer. This is called the barter system, and it has now been replaced to a very large extent by a system with money as an intermediary since that is far more efficient. In any case, the musicians must be supported somehow or they will die, and it is unrealistic to expect society to simply pay them or feed them, particularly because there are far more people who'd like to be musicians than there is need/demand for musicians. Obviously this a big simplification of our very complex, interconnected society/economy (since there are loads of other factors apart from music and food, such as medical care and luxury goods), but the basics pretty much hold, and mean that musicians need to actually get money somehow, and one small part of how this happens is through there being ads on their RUclips videos. And alternative would be for the musicians to also produce food themselves, but that could be a waste of their particular talents and time, or they could simply be bad at that sort of thing, and anyway there are economies of scale and benefits of specialization, so it's generally better for individuals to not try to be completely self-supported, and to instead focus more on certain aspects of things and support other people in these aspects, and to in return be supported in other aspects by other people (that's pretty obvious and foundational to society and to economics). This is particularly obvious when you bear in mind that the musician wouldn't just have to be a farmer too to support themselves completely without some money or bartering needing to be involved; they would also have to manufacture their own guitars/keyboards, cure their own illness, program their own music-making-softwares, invent+construct their own computers, and even do all the research required to take them from a caveman's understanding to the modern physics (discovered by thousands of years of scientists) require to design computers. That's clearly ridiculous, so it's better if the musician focuses primarily on music, creating a "product" that others enjoy, and in return those others give the musician what they have focused on, and money makes this system more efficient, though also more complicated. I'm not advocating pure or unhindered capitalism (which has never actually existed anywhere anyway; there's always been some degree of non-monetary transactions and non-capitalistic altruism and stuff), nor am I saying our current system is anything like perfect. However, not watching ads on RUclips videos from good musicians does not help to increase humanity's transcendence (this is a bit of an odd term to use here, but I'll use it anyway to more directly counter your point); it is actually a very selfish thing to do. It increases the transcendence of the specific individuals who don't have to watch the ads - that is true. However, it means that the site - RUclips, in this case - and the musician - Hammock, in this case - both make less money. Hammock has to spend time to make this music, and RUclips has to spend money running servers. If they don't get something in return, they will be motivated to do other things with their time, or they will simply be unable to continue (many musicians just have to go back to do "normal" jobs and have to give up their careers in music since they don't have time to do both and they weren't making enough money from music to support themselves or their families). I know there are other sources of income for musicians, but this is one part of it, and also RUclips and similar sites are an important part of the process so they have to be supported as well. Just you not watching ads doesn't make a significant dent in the revenues of Hammock or of RUclips. However, if everyone acted as you do then RUclips would be completely forced to close - as would many other great sites - and Hammock would probably have to spent more time doing "normal" jobs, and if people only ever watched their RUclips videos without ads and pirated their music then they'd be forced to do other jobs. Really, you're essentially cheating; leaching off other people's contributions; the only reason that you can get what you want slightly better than how other people get it is because the other people make the sacrifice of watching the ads to keep the system working and the servers running. I'm not an economist or a sociologist, and this is just a RUclips comment, so feel free to do more research or thinking of your own, but please do think about what would happen if everyone turned on ad-blocker, and please stop advocating for people to do that, at least. I don't even really ask that you yourself turn it off, but just don't tell others to turn it on without at least thinking of the consequences. Some stuff certainly needs to be changed, but it would be foolish to just do away with everything that is flawed without thought for what we'd be left with without it. It's actually pretty easy to point out flaws with the present state of something (I could write a thousand essays about what's wrong with society, even as I defend commercialism to the limited extent that I do in this comment), but often pretty damn hard to propose a solution or a better state or a way to actually reach a better state, so I again put to you these two questions: How do you actually imagine this commercialism-free society of yours working? What would it really be like?
1Shatter1 I enjoyed that comment, but I do think it's probably a bad idea to bring up the Bible on RUclips if you are trying to *avoid* arguments... often turns out badly...
If tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not here to see, If the sun should rise you find your eyes all filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today, While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you And each time that you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand. He said my place was ready, in heaven far above And that I’d have to leave behind all those I dearly love. But as I turned and walked away a tear fell from my eye. For all my life I’d always thought, I didn’t want to die. I had so much to live for, so much left yet to do. It seemed almost impossible that I was leaving you. I thought of all the yesterdays the good ones and the bad. I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had. If I could relive yesterday, just even for a while, I’d say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized that this could never be, For emptiness and memories would take the place of me. When I thought of worldly things I might miss come tomorrow I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow. When I walked through heavens gates I felt so much at home. God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne He said, “This is eternity and all I’ve promised you” Today your life on earth has passed but here life starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last And since each day is the same there’s no longing for the past. You have been so faithful so trusting and so true. Though there were times you did some things you knew you shouldn’t do. You have been forgiven and now at last you’re free. So won’t you come and take my hand and share my life with me? So when tomorrow starts with out me don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart. Author: David Romano
You will, as this universe is finite but time itself is infinite, other universes will emerge, an infinity of them, until the one where you will see him again, and again and again.
It may be because Hammock music is so emotive and gives so deep sensations, pleasant and nice and somewhat wistful at the same time, with some kind of gentle sadness, it's beautiful.
Hammock are one of my absolute favorite artists. Their music touches me in a way I can't even explain. This is the music I put on when I want to get deep into my writing. Thank you for making this wonderful music.
Oh man, 14 years ago! 😳 It's curious how that song always makes me watch my own life like it's a film... And it's kinda sad cause it feels so distant and nostalgic at the same time. Pure gold
Hammock always touches my soul. Every single song does it. These sounds are like universe or band's members can feel the universe's soul and put it in their songs. Very emotional and relaxing. That's what real music is all about. Truly amazing! And I love people who understands this kind of music.
What a beautiful tune. I love this very much. I am Japanese and this "Mono no aware" has a very deep and insightful meaning. Somehow this piece brings me into tears.
I really wanted to play the start of the song backwards, because I was curious what it would sound like. so I downloaded it and edited it to play in reverse ... I was so surprised how much I liked it, there's this really beautiful piano bit playing at the start that you can't hear in the normal song. I would recommend you try it if you like this song !
:) .. ohh just for future reference, there's a version of this song playing in reverse already on youtube. So you don't need to download and edit it yourself.
I feel it's someone focusing on the memories of his childhood and a girl he once knew and loved who maybe passed away and he's looking back on the joy and fun they shared together.
The video combined with the melody really captures the poetry of memory. This is like taking the memory that someone is most fond of directly from his own brain, and putting it on film, exactly how that person reminiscence these moments in his head. Brilliant. Never seen and heard anything like it on this level. This beauty can easily sweep many of current 3-hour long films and short films easily in my list, placing it in one of the best, in art, and in humanly sense. Reminds me of childhood....
Same here, and it's not only a game for the people that says that its the worst game... it's an experience, weird that some people can listen to this music and don't appreciate that game, it's a truly beautiful piece of art that not anyone can appreciate with an open heart..
So sorry for your lack of perception, John. But clearly that game/experience is not for the masses, people nowadays just want to run and shoot, run and shoot, I'm not even a teen, but it has a lot of realistic stuff and moral behind (besides of the time travels that are an excuse just to see the consequences of our actions, it can apply in real life). Common issues/situations at any age such as drugs, sex, bullying, abuse, kidnapping, suicide are in them, I don't see any ''tumblr teens stuff'' there... but sorry if that's your perception... as I said, is not for everyone to appreciate.
Well, you like to say that some things are for ''tumblr teens'' and for ''white girls'' and I don't know what else, you just can't go there saying that to people, John. I do know people that love the game, and others hate it, I can't do anything but to share my point of view. You don't know a lot about different taste and you just said that you are a teen..... and then deleted it... don't know why. I won't judge you for that.
Many songs make you feel like it was so good in the past but now it's gone, this song is exactly the opposite, it shows how down in the dumps you can be and stand up again, because even after the dark night comes the bright day. I didn't have a good past, i grew up being bullied at school, i hate my life to be honest because everything i do i fail,i was on the verge of suicide but this song makes me believe that it's going to get better, that one day i'll be happy.Thank you Hammock.
Imagine Your walking through an open field. There's no end the endless amounts of flourishing green. You run your hands along the soft blades, closing your eyes as you gently tug off a few strands and bring them up to your nose. Inhaling the scent as nostalgia and childhood memories float through your mind. It suddenly turns night. You feel as though your heart has stopped. You lay down on the ground gently, resting your head against the pillow like surface. The last thing you see before your drift into the hard and darkening thoughts of reality are the millions of stars surrounding your vision. You shut your eyes, leaving everything you've ever wanted and dreamed about behind. This is my interpretation of it
Every night I come to this song, I sit in my dark room with the memory of past and the content of my being. Mono No Aware resembles my life; it's a slow, somber passing, but can be enjoyed without explanation.
Even though we may never know why things are happening the way they are, what the purpose of life is, why are we here, whether time-travel will ever become a reality and most importantly where does all of everything (planets, spirits, people, Universe, life.. etc) that there is come from, this song reminds me that I have to appreciate all that there is, explore as much as I can and stay REALLY happy, because I'm going to die one day. -Love
Death is also beautiful when you have hope to hold on to and acceptance of the end. I think the point of this video is to show how even the childlike memories and feelings we have can be a sad reminder of simpler things in a now complex world, but that we can cherish and feel loved by right until your final moments. Love the things you have lost, and know that the losing is what makes them prescious.
So much symbolism in this video. I literally had chills when I saw the hand print dissipate at the end. It's a perfect visual metaphor for the transient nature of life. It's there, and then it's gone. Enjoy every moment while it lasts.
Musicians who composes this song are brilliant, and we are here listening to their masterpiece. So we are also brilliant like them because we are putting our thoughts and feelings into it, just like they did!
I would really want to know where this was shot, this place looks beautiful. Also is there a official meaning to the girl in the video? I have my own interpretation sure, but Im curious. For me this symbolizes heaven, i feel so peaceful when im listening to this. This whole place is so beautiful, it reminds me of a place in my hometown.
I'm real late but I interpret her as consciousness. There to experience joy, fulfilment, peace progress, discovery, curiosity. But also to experience sadness, regret etc. Because that is life. What is your interpretation?
@@Elysium346 That she is some kind of Angel that spends some time with you after you died. Especially at 4:48, when there are two persons, like you are the other person.
I just play a game when I miss my dad. I put this song on and close my eyes and start pretending he never died. I am in the bed and I pretend he's there playing with nieces and nephews while my mom is still happy and not depressed as now. I simile and cry at the same time. And i pretend everything is still normal. After the song ends i feel a deep emptyness in my heart
My girlfriend and I saw Hammock play in a church in Philadelphia years ago. Caught in traffic during the long drive, we arrived right as Hammock finished setup. We took a seat quietly and absorbed the atmosphere as little green stars swirled around the room and ghostly projections danced on the walls. And then they played this song. I'll never forget it; how I held my girl in my arms and was choking back tears. It was one of the most beautiful moments in my entire life and to this day I miss it.
I hope the girl in this video, whoever she is and wherever she is, is safe, happy and healthy today. I wonder what she is doing now... Mono no aware my friends
The dawn sang to me that day. We've never had such emotions before, and it was literally the pathos of things. We recalled the great atmospheres we'd had. We looked up to the blue sky, just to see it change to night. It was astounding. Don't ever let me be forgotten, for I live next to you.
Its such a great thing to get away from the everyday music videos on youtube, the VEVO, the fan based versions of different pop, rock, hip-hop or whatever your into and key into something as beautiful as these songs, some 170,000+ of us have or will view this video and will be able to appreciate what music like this really stands for. its pieces like this that help to heal the broken heart, focus, think, love, reflect, im glad im in this part of youtube, this is my happy place, lets all enjoy it

I always think about that every time I go out! sometimes my friends upset me for not paying attention, but I'm actually watching the people. It is that each of the unknown has a hidden universe, and each is unique (:
amen. fucking likewise :)
Me too, you and I are alike in our thoughts... :)
You're just like me. I never thought I'd know of someone who thinks like this..
This song had me crying buckets of tears.

This piece truly captures “Mono no Aware”- and Japanese culture described this human emotion brilliantly all that is missing is the cherry blossoms, that bloom beautifully then fade quickly-like the seasons of our lives
This song is very emotional, make me cry..
At 4:54 when the violin starts to play, I just lose it...such art in this song, so much beauty this band holds...

Hammock breathes life into me...
Just when I was starting to take for granted my free ad-blocker-
Are they [Intrusive advertisements- disruptive in every sense of the word] 'actually' "important to keep the world running?" The "spirit of our time" would have us believe all this senseless commercialism is of vital importance to 'the system;' what of a less corrupt alternative, though? The reign of Capitalism will draw to an end just as soon as it has exhausted the last of its historical energy, and with it the concomitant, detrimental indignities of intrinsic obsolescence, materialism, consumerism et cetera (Damned if I stop there- the list goes on and on). Support not that which you know to be hindering humanity's transcendence.
Nikola Filajdic
How do you actually imagine this commercialism-free society of yours working?
It's actually pretty easy to point out flaws with the present state of something (I could write a thousand essays about what's wrong with society, even as I defend commercialism to the limited extent that I do in this comment), but often pretty damn hard to propose a solution or a better state or a way to actually reach a better state, so I again put to you these two questions:
How do you actually imagine this commercialism-free society of yours working? What would it really be like?

GUYS STOP! You CANT argue. This the chat under a Hammock video, it's in the Bible, right above no murdering
1Shatter1
I enjoyed that comment, but I do think it's probably a bad idea to bring up the Bible on RUclips if you are trying to *avoid* arguments... often turns out badly...
Openness, it is spreading, acceptance too, it's the fifth dimension calling =P
I've been listening to Hammock every day since 2011, over and over. It transcends time and space.
This is my favorite song in the world. If only everyone in the world could hear it
To see a world in a grain of sand
and a heaven in a wildflower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour
- William Blake -
Again at this corner of the RUclips
I'm blessed to be here
Beautiful song, beautiful video, Hammock is the light in a dark, cold world.
If tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not here to see,
If the sun should rise you find your eyes all filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say.
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you
And each time that you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand.
He said my place was ready, in heaven far above
And that I’d have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
If I could relive yesterday, just even for a while,
I’d say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realized that this could never be,
For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.
When I thought of worldly things I might miss come tomorrow
I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow.
When I walked through heavens gates I felt so much at home.
God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne
He said, “This is eternity and all I’ve promised you”
Today your life on earth has passed but here life starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last
And since each day is the same there’s no longing for the past.
You have been so faithful so trusting and so true.
Though there were times you did some things you knew you shouldn’t do.
You have been forgiven and now at last you’re free.
So won’t you come and take my hand and share my life with me?
So when tomorrow starts with out me don’t think we’re far apart,
For every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart.

Extremely good music. It makes me reflect on the beauty and sorrowfulness of life, best of both worlds.
I am really really digging your guys' stuff. I have been trying to find this type of music for a very long time. And I have just found it, Thank you.
That's exactly how I felt when I discovered Hammock.
I feel the same way, I've been searching for a long time. All of hammock tracks are beautiful
Literally my very favorite song ever. Thank you so much hammock.... You're incredible
Hallo, please enjoy it once again!
I keep coming back to this, my absolute favorite song I only play once a year. its my song.
Best ghost story I've seen in a LONG time......
Ah, so that's what the video's meaning is
I miss you grandpa. I hope one day to see you again!
You will, as this universe is finite but time itself is infinite, other universes will emerge, an infinity of them, until the one where you will see him again, and again and again.
Maybe.
Looks like a copy paste comment
i know how you feel but just my dad and my mom
My grandpa died 10 years ago still miss him everyday. We will meet them someday don't worry 😕😞
i cried when I listened to this song I don't know why
I feel the same
It may be because Hammock music is so emotive and gives so deep sensations, pleasant and nice and somewhat wistful at the same time, with some kind of gentle sadness, it's beautiful.
Same here.
Hammock are one of my absolute favorite artists. Their music touches me in a way I can't even explain. This is the music I put on when I want to get deep into my writing. Thank you for making this wonderful music.
I feel like, crying . This is the most beautiful thing in the world I know so far...
What about now? Lots of music has happened over those years since you've posted this
What about now? Lots hve music has been released since you've posted this comment
Oh man, 14 years ago! 😳 It's curious how that song always makes me watch my own life like it's a film... And it's kinda sad cause it feels so distant and nostalgic at the same time. Pure gold
This song always helps me in all my.bad times. I'm glad you made it. It's helping me right now
Thank you Hammock, for this.
Masterpiece
I would recommend you try it if you like this song !
thanks !
:) .. ohh just for future reference, there's a version of this song playing in reverse already on youtube. So you don't need to download and edit it yourself.
Found this song in 2020... damn this is one of the deepest combinations of music and video I have ever heard and seen
RIP Pfc Sam Williams Huff. You will never be forgotten. Thank you for your sacrifice and for your part in keeping us safe.
true masterpiece
I feel it's someone focusing on the memories of his childhood and a girl he once knew and loved who maybe passed away and he's looking back on the joy and fun they shared together.
still love this anyone else?
The video combined with the melody really captures the poetry of memory. This is like taking the memory that someone is most fond of directly from his own brain, and putting it on film, exactly how that person reminiscence these moments in his head.
Brilliant. Never seen and heard anything like it on this level. This beauty can easily sweep many of current 3-hour long films and short films easily in my list, placing it in one of the best, in art, and in humanly sense.
Reminds me of childhood....
This somehow reminds me of Life is Strange...

SCREAMING CAUSE THATS MY FAVE GAME OF ALL TIME :')
I won't judge you for that.
unbelievable cinematography and one of my favourite artists
Это шедевр!👍🎨🌹
PRAISE GOD for this beautiful video the winter setting the beautiful porcelain white skin of the woman in the video I love hammock so much!!
it's so inspiring
4 mins in and I was in tears.. beautiful.
this film is freaking awesome.
Imagine
Your walking through an open field.
😢
this is so beautiful.
this seriously makes me think about reliving memories i'll never have again and it makes me so sad
Eu mal consegui segurar as lágrimas. Simplesmente uma das coisas mais lindas que eu já ouvi na vida!
Eu também 😭😭
simplicity is not always as poor as it shows , and that video can approve that concept...
Hammock is so wonderful. I love these sounds and they constitute a significant part of the musical accompaniment to my life.
hammock, how much i love you...
beautiful... love this whole album!
wow este video removio sentimientos , en mi ser llore excelente video
Make more music. We need more of your music.
The world needs more of your music.
12 years later , really ? Why i couldnt find this beatiful song before
So much symbolism in this video. I literally had chills when I saw the hand print dissipate at the end. It's a perfect visual metaphor for the transient nature of life. It's there, and then it's gone. Enjoy every moment while it lasts.
RIP Etika
There's only one today, and what you do today matters.
Chrissi it was shot in New Hampshire a few days after Christmas in 2008.
@@Ender1 Thank you!
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.
After this covid hit, I fear losing my parents. It's a nightmare. I don't know what I'll do if the worst happens.
One of the most calming and elegant songs ever
There is an award-winning short story titled "Mono No Aware" by Ken Liu. It goes so well with this song, and also explains the meaning.
I'd like to see Mono name a song "Hammock no aware"
The most melancholic music video you could every ask for.
I hope the girl in this video, whoever she is and wherever she is, is safe, happy and healthy today.
I wonder what she is doing now...

Jennifer Turner I don't understand cheese factory so I guess I'm mono unaware?
There's something about that young lady. She's so natural, beautiful, lovely and happy. She's always in hammock's videos too.
This song is a gem among many other Hammock gems, but I think this might be my favourite, it's so beautiful and sad, it takes my breath away......
it's always monday . . .
HezkyPC I’m recording this game
The dawn sang to me that day. We've never had such emotions before, and it was literally the pathos of things. We recalled the great atmospheres we'd had. We looked up to the blue sky, just to see it change to night. It was astounding.
