I've owned 16 motorcycles in my life. My sv650 is the only one I regret getting rid of. Amazing bike. That low end torque, engine braking is perfect for back canyons. And for the commute to work. I got around 50 mpg doing 80 mph.

I know this is late, but could you elaborate more on why this is not a beginner bike? I'm a pure beginner, my first time going to riding a motorcycle. I am currently in the process of looking at "good" beginner bikes for the buck. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

@@khawmmung864 I've ridden atv's my whole life, so riding a motorcycle was a natural progression for me.
I've got a 2006 sv650s with the large sportbike fairings, and this thing honestly surprised me with the power.
I took it out for the first time and it has a very responsive throttle. It wants to GO. But the power is tame once you know how it responds to your inputs. I honestly get why Mr. Regular says what he does about the SV. In the hands of someone irresponsible or not cautious as a beginner, it will cause problems.

@@khawmmung864 I currently own a 2008 SV 650, but I started riding on an CBR600 like 10 years ago and stopped riding due to insurance issues.
The SV torque is way different and can get you in trouble as a new rider if not careful. As soon as you get on it there's torque and it puuuuls all the way through and that's why people like them on the track. You will get used to it after a while like with any bike BUT depending on your comfort zone it can be scary at first. A 250cc bike has no torque on the low end so it's just easier to not make mistakes basically if you panic or hit the throttle too hard. It's hard to explain in words but if you have never ever had a bike or have done rider training it can get you in trouble. Also a 250 is much lighter so sudden stops are easier to handle if you loose the balance. Feel free to reach out with more questions

@@khawmmung864 they’re great bikes to start on, but the bike itself is not built to be a beginner bike. It’s just a fun and light bike with a cool v-twin. I’ve been riding bikes for years and have one as a second bike for around town or a local canyon run.

  • @TheBigChad
    @TheBigChad 3 года назад +54

I’ve always been one of the guys that says learn on whatever you wanna learn on. Part of motorcycles that attracts me is the freedom, and people telling you to learn on this or that doesn’t embody freedom to me. With that said, this is a very good bike to learn on if you’re a bit apprehensive. I still own mine just because of how fun it is in all around riding. I think if you fall in love with the seating position of this but want something faster, then the cb1000 or the MT10 is the next logical step. I’m waiting for my son to turn 16 so I can give him the sv650. Can’t wait to finally have someone to ride with on a consistent basis. The only reason to have a kid

For one, he’s not new to knowing how to ride, and two, my wife is military so we move around a lot. I don’t have time to find riding buddies. I work 80+ hours a week so unless they’re already my friends, I’m cruising with strangers and then going home

I've owned my SV650 since 2007, it's an '05... it's the only bike I have kept, and will keep for as long as I can. I've bought and sold half a dozen bikes in 15yrs of riding but the SV has stayed with me. The motor is amazing and the most likeable feature. The brakes and suspension only show their weakness when pushed like a supersport... but That's solvable with select upgrades. There's good reason why these are raced so often... besides being cheap. These are not beginner bikes, That's not the intention. A smart newbie can do it, though.

Best bike I ever owned, it sounded great to my ears, it was smooth, tons of torque for a 650cc and didn’t kill my back after 45 minutes like all my friends who were on GSXR750s and R6s, they all wanted to ride it when they could.

I see so many comments saying that this bike isn’t fast so it’s good for beginners , uh I’m just saying I have videos of my bike drag racing a literally 820 hp hellcat on slicks in the 1/8 mile , did not win but it’s very clear I was on his bumper the whole way . Raced a 600 hp Camaro, beat him . Raced a big turbo Honda that was 420-430hp , beat him while mis-shifting . none of those cars are beginner/first cars so why the hell would a sv650 be a beginner bike lol it was my first bike but I had already been riding all of my friends 600’s for half a year or so

Josh Bennett the higher ha doe bars make it very comfortable. I’m 5’9 I feel like I lean forward a bit, but not far enough where I have butt or back pain. It’s the near perfect angle for comfortable riding and leaning into a turn. Everything he says is true about it.

Josh Bennett you’re welcome! I weigh 250 by the way. I went with a 600cc+ because I felt it was the correct power for me. 250-300cc felt unsafe because when I cracked the throttle it didn’t take off fast enough. Just something to keep in mind!

Alright, I've never ridden a street purposed motorcycle, but I am considering getting into it. I'm quite a big boy @ 260lbs and I'm not looking for something quite as sporty as the sv650. I'm looking for cheap ( I completely understand that you get what you pay for), comfort, fuel efficiency, and reliability. I'm thinking some sort of cruiser would fit these conditions. If anybody could point me in some sort of direction, it'd be greatly appreciated! I also do a lot of 75mph highway driving, if that helps.

I own one of these. Granted, it's restricted (EU laws, I'm not old enough to have a full license yet), but even with what, 48hp (something like that), this bike is super fun. It sounds great, it rides great, and it looks great too considering the design is from 2003. I love it so much that my dream bike right now is basically just an SV1000S.
Also want to point out that you should never wheelie these. Due to an oversight in its design, the oil pump can't suck up the oil when wheeleing, leading to oil starvation.

I bought mine as a first bike and while it did feel extremely fast initially, I got used to it within a month. It feels slow to me now haha. 10k miles is a lot for bikes in a year. When I bought mine last year the previous owners had put 200 miles on it per year.

The sv650 is a brilliant bike but if you can find a good one the sv1000(s or n) is a really great platform bike.upgrade brake lines and suspension chuck in a decent exhaust(m4) and a well set up power commander and you have so much bang for the buck its not true.
Ps-the suzuki saddle is not the most comfortable around!

I'm considering a Triumph Bonneville T100 or T120. What do you think of thise choices? I really have no interest in a sport bike. I'm leaning toward the T120 right now.
