  • Louisiana’s MAGA extremist Governor Jeff Landry is withholding badly needed funds that could fix New Orleans’ water system because he believes the state is not doing enough to prosecute women who seek abortions.
    Louisiana is home to one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the entire U.S.

There have been 3 Republicans that have won presidency and didn't have the popular vote, 2 of them since 2000, George W. Bush and Donald J. Trump. A Democrat has NEVER won the presidency like that.

      The assassination of Lincoln played a large part in that. In those days it was common to have a rival as your VP to garner broader support. So Andrew Johnson (his VP from Tennessee) became president and absolutely destroyed his plans for Reconstruction, ensuring the Confederacy would live on. Apple's new series "Manhunt" details this wonderfully.

      Sorry to say, but we've already lost it after the debate last week. Dems are already fragmenting and looking for another option other than Biden. The only way to stop Trump's Fascism is to vote Biden. It's certainly not an ideal choice, but it's universally better than the alternative.
      It always takes a few election cycles for new voters to realize that you can obviously vote for whomever you wish, but if you don't _vote for the lesser of the two established evils,_ you're throwing your vote away and will have to _live with the greater of two evils_ for at least the next 4 years. Or even worse, as evidenced in the case of Trump's SCOTUS installments, possibly the next 40 years of true Fascist radicalization.
      I am already planning to cash out of America and leave this all behind. Always wanted to live in another country before I die and our current predicament just seals the deal in my mind.

      People voted in twenty sixteen. Did the majority win? Go check. Why vote if your majority won't win? I'm not blaming anyone or anything. Y'all need ranked choice voting, the option to vote via mail, and donors capped for campaigns at very, very, very cheap. Don't let any party advertise to vulnerable peeps if they're just going to misinfospew with it. Make their votes be their only communication on policy. This won't happen, though, I believe, because people in poverty are too exhausted to change their systems until they are broken completely. And wOoOoOo, is that place rampant with the impoverished. Until their systems are broken (the dams break), or the poverty subsides, systems won't change and votes won't increase.

    • @PMickeyDee
      @PMickeyDee 5 дней назад +14

      She very clearly stated why: both parties have absolutely failed us & often actively work against our interest. The perspective is 'nothing will change, why try?' I don't share this view, but it's absolutely pervasive in this state. We aren't a red state, at least in the common perception of one. We are a non-voter state (with the plurality of registered voters being affiliated with the democratic party).
      The most energized election I can remember in this state was in 2019 when a milquetoast democratic incumbent governor (JBE) was up against a Trump wannabe (Eddie Rispone), the milquetoast incumbent won because people actually showed up.
      The 2023 election was a whole other ballgame. No one was energized about Landry's main opponent. Landry had also been given this weird status of 'not yet elected' next governor by the media for well over a year leading up to October. The only people who really showed up were either Landry fans or those who could see what was coming. There is also a whole other debacle that was the DSCC, it was a total mess & totally useless at getting anyone elected or even giving the appearance of a fight. If I remember the statistics correctly only 36% of registered voters cast a ballot in that race.
      I know this is a whole lot of information but context is kinda important when you talk about Louisiana politics. We even had one fella serve four terms as governor who's winning campaign slogan in his last gubernatorial election was "Vote for the crook, it's important" (admittedly he was running against a former grand wizard at the time).

      @@freedomishavingachoice3020 TBH I don't think you're wrong. But I'll add that I firmly believe that if we had another Huey P Long figure run for office they would mop the floor with their opponent. For all of his flaws, he was loved by people because he helped those at the bottom, and most importantly on the campaign trail he actually appealed to them. Mind you, I'm talking anecdotally, from talking those who remembered his tenures & those relaying their parents feelings about him.

      @PMickeyDee Your response was refreshing. Thanks. My old boss used to tell me "Let it break (if you can stay safe)." He was an old union guy. I know what he meant now. People just don't try until systems are completely broken. They'd rather keep the very obviously failing system afloat than start over, and have to be accountable for that new system. I've found making us start over is sometimes the best thing we can do for society. Old systems keep old problems. If no one's on the old bridge, and you know it's gunna fail due to infrastructure cuts, what should you do? Block it off until kids inevitably fall off it, or tear it down? Thank you again. Hope you make many happy moments.

    I was born and raised in Louisiana, but moved to a different red state (Arkansas ) almost 40 years ago. When I go back now, there is something so depressing and so oppressive about it. It hangs in the air. The divide between the races has widened. I’m a white, proud, liberal democrat who had thought that, in retirement, I might move back “home”, but there is no way I could ever do that. Arkansas is “purple” in the central part of the state, so I can manage to stay here. However, our state government has become so much more trumpy, that I’m worried about that. The irony is that all this narrow minded, hate filled rhetoric and actions come from “christians”. I can’t make myself use a capital C because it’s an insult to Christ and what he taught. These people are not Christians. They have turned me away from religion. Maybe one day, I’ll be able to use that term of Christianity and not feel a little sick.

Even if that employer, it's going to raise a stink, you remind them you have the legal right to vote. Even when I took public transportation or rode a bicycle to work across town, with no way to leave work go vote and return within an hour... I would just take what time it took. Sometimes you work places you can't afford to live in, and I know other low-wage workers who felt like they couldn't risk... Taking the time to vote. But what everyone needs to remember, is a skip a vote, people will win offices who make it even harder to be a poor person, a woman, a person of color, lgbtq+, the Republicans have always voted against social safety nets and workers rights.

Though I am concerned about the safety of women in a committed relationship. Be aware of your body, take monthly pregnancy tests to catch it early, tests are $1.25 at Dollar Tree, stock up.
