On what would have been assassinated Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba’s 99th birthday, we speak with author and analyst Vijay Prashad, who has just published a lengthy article on Lumumba and the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s ongoing struggle for control over its own resources. Sunday marked the 64th anniversary of Lumumba’s historic speech marking his country’s independence from Belgium, in which he delivered a blistering critique of colonialism. Lumumba’s rise to become the first elected prime minister of Congo came after decades of brutal violence under Belgian rule and the extraction of vast wealth in rubber, ivory and other commodities from the country. Lumumba was assassinated soon after taking office in a plot involving the CIA and Belgium, leading to decades of dictatorship under Mobutu Sese Seko, wars, poverty and resource exploitation that continues to ravage the country to this day. “The issue of control over resources is fundamental,” says Prashad, director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. “The Congolese have never been able to put forward a national project around how to unite the people. … This has always been suborned by external intervention.”

The ongoing waste being laid to Congo is extremely distressing and disheartening
Congo should be the richest country in the world. Centuries of resource exploitation that continues today.
If there was ever a real life Wakanda, Congo was it until the colonizers came along.
Mr. Prashad is the developing world’s Noam Chomsky: his commentary on, and commitment to, the analysis of sub-Saharan anti-colonialism is superb. May his tribe increase!
Hear, hear!
using the term 'developing world' shows you are clueless about geopolitics and anti-colonialism.
to .. PATRICE LUMUMBA... long live lone power.. RED GREEN AND BLACK forever..😔😪🩸♥
Thank you Vijay Prashad. Thank you Amy.
Kinda of an insult…I’d recommend picking non book readers… natives from that area
Please keep teaching us the facts.
Thank you Democracy Now for recalling the story of Lumumba❤
I have an old t-shirt with this quote that comes to mind after watching this vid: "We must not only heal the suffering that oppression causes, but we must also heal the suffering that causes oppression" - sterling toles
nice. thank you.
Remembering Patrice Lumumba on the day of his birth! Thank you Vijay for your work which dispels western engineered myths about the Congo, Africa and Africans, the criminally depraved, dysfunctional dynamic in which Africa is bound to western economies to their detriment. The continued colonization under different guises by the West's policy of underdevelopment and destabilization for their benefit at the physical, material and intellectual cost of the Congolese and Africans. May journalists, researchers, activists and others from around the world unlearn these myths to discover and configure the missing puzzle pieces for a cohesive Peace, in understanding why and how to overcome the ultra racist, hyper capitalist hegemony to achieve authentic DECOLONIZATION. When Africa is liberated the hegemonic machine cannot sustain itself. And importantly to achieve reprieve from centuries of plunder by the usual psychopathic suspects in order for Africans to inherit their wealth for the benefit of their people and cohesive equanimity for the rest of the world.
Do those usual suspects include Rwanda and Uganda?
So appreciate the conversations on vital issues like this that still shape our world to this day. More people, esp in the west, need un-doctrinate themselves from the veneer of our “democracy”!
excellent interview
Thank you
Vijay Prashad great Marxist thinker!
Thank you Amy for talking about RDC👏🏾
Then til now nothing has changed.. Humanity has nothing human about it. Between Africa & Ayiti their being punished for standing up straight, then given the Bible to comply to
The Bible is complicit when it comes to keeping my people spiritually and mentally enslaved...
@@PROGRESS4eva smh I seen the difference I attend catholic schools, and I was an altered boy. Then having hood friends that were baptist Jehovah’s Witnesses and all of the above I felt like a real life twilight zone. How do you have nuns overlook them and look for a little boys? Then in the churches, how are you freaking everybody’s wife everybody’s daughters stealing everybody’s money and telling us to pull ourselves up by the boot straps and it’s a greater day.
His spirit is here now❤
2000 years of History could not be wiped away so easily.

Amazing knowledge
Thank you Vijay , for your all teaching
i wonder what it's like to live in the third world, where the rivers run red with the blood of their heroes
sad that videos about the congo gets such poor views
I hate that this always the case when it comes to African centered news but it just further shows the hold that white hegemony has on the psyche of this entire planet.

Amazing interview. Democracy Now, bringing it now.
facts
They don't teach these thing at school, we must share all this important histories
Lumumba Vive!
African Unity - I like the sound of it. It's important to remember SUB Saharan Africa is real different from Northern countries. I'm no expert, just saying.
Kwame Nkrumah is the greatest president to govern a state in Africa but the powers that be felt threatened and decided to dethrone him, short of killing him like they did Patrice Lumumba 🇬🇭 🇨🇩
He was removed by a CIA sponsored coup bcos he wants to back control of his own country's rich resources for the benefit of his own people instead of being controlled by those huge western corporations. This is the reason why those leaders in Washington DC wanted him replaced by someone more obedient
Great history lesson and reminder.
vijay is always a phenomenal guest. Always gives a master class in every interview. He's an amazing communicator not just a thorough researcher.
Great mind.
Falasteen will teach America what it has turn it back on أ عطني الحرية أعطني الموت
“Give me liberty or give
me death " the words of Patrick Henry, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and the first governor of Virginia. A gifted orator and major figure in the American Revolution, his rousing speeches- which included a 1775 speech to the Virginia legislature in which he famously declared, "Give me liberty, or give me death!"-fired up America's fight for independence.

As a progressive leftist Chinese, I think it is a tragedy that the US supported the ouster of Patrice from DRC and replaced him with Mobutu……
The is the reason for the US endless wars of aggression around the world. To remove any leader that dare disobey their orders n replace them with a corrupt puppet who can be easily bribed to sign very favourable deals that gives huge benefits to US corporations n their mining companies to control their strategic assets n extract resources at very favourable terms
✌️
Paul Kagame's Rwanda keeping majority of Congolese in poverty
🖤
They killed Lumumba, than installed a tyrant and a thief for more than 30 years, than they ask whats wrong with the Congo
The sins of our country (and the British) go way back, don’t they
Another example of the US empire going down
0:41 Very telling picture!
Lumumba's Judas standing behind, pondering his own selfish agenda!
Congo has not recovered from that treachery and trauma after several decades!
Amy next time for the love of respect please contact a local university professor in the mentioned countries to contribute, it makes little sense to have foreigners talking about colonialism,,,,, would you ever invite Congolese to talk about US national politics???
Talking about the problems of DRC with no mention of the two major wars there is more than a little selective.
@@seansmith3058 and the ongoing one, not to mention Rwanda's and companies like apple's exploitations and crimes.

Amy seriously we talking about Africa with “Vijay” ………there’s no Congolese native? College students are great at reading scripts but natives hold more weight
0:07 is it just me or was that change of pace very jarring and unnatural?
teleprompter must've went double time!

This guy denies the crimes against the Uyghurs, stop having him on!!!!
Western lies against China!
Thank you, Vijay for this fascinating discussion on the Congolese crisis up to this day! Sad indeed 💔🥲
Bullshit it's from Australia and they stored it in S.I.NY
