Making Custom Length Spark Plug Wires for the IS300 Coils on my 7M!! (8mm Accel Extreme Ceramic)

  • The original plug wires that came with these coils were way too long (since they weren't made for this car) and kinda puny, so I got some Universal cut-to length wires that seemed a bit better. This is the kit I used: www.holley.com/products/ignit... - lots of extras, so I also made a second "set" to have on hand in case these go bad. We will see how these work! The bummer is that I couldn't find any with the IS300 coil end type, they are pretty much all made for domestic vehicles, so I had to swap the ends over from the other original wires, which is mainly what I show in this video.
    These are my coils: www.driftmotion.com/IS300-VVT...
I'm not sure how this is going to work yet, so if you do this too, do so at your own risk! Just wanted to show y'all how it looks. Pretty stoked on it, but still need to figure out what to do with the whole galley area to organize the wires and such.

Hey Faye, I wanted to do that in the past almost always there’s at least a couple wires that are too long sometimes incredibility Long but was hesitant not to let the “Magic out“ thanks for sharing your magic with us. Great job.👍🐔🐔🐔👍

Thanks for taking me back to my early days as a wrench in the 60's where we did this as a matter of course. I think I might still have a roll of wire and a box of terminals somewhere in the junk stash. BTW, the boots can make perfect caps or insulators for wired sensors and such. I use a right-angle boot on top of the oil pressure switch on my bike.

@@FayeHadley Glad you like the suggestion. Use shrink tube to take up any slack. Back when there was no internet to look things up on and parts were limited or non-existent, you had to find creative ways to do things. We never threw anything away because we figured there would be some use for it. Always enjoy your videos and your upbeat attitude!

Oh this takes me back to when I first started in a shop! We had Napa or Belden ignition wire on a roll and we would cut to length and crimp on the ends. Thank you for the memory Faye 👍

Hey Faye! Just wanted to say nice job of the wires. I have 2 suggestions for your next ignition wiring job.
    1. Invest in spark plug wire crimpers. More effective than the needle nose pliers in the video.
    2. When you cut the wire to legnth, make your cut at 45° instead of 90°. Lube it with dielectric grease (like you did) and slide it through the boot. You won't need to use the screwdriver as a pick to guild the wire through the boot. When its at a 90, it dead heads against the back of the boot. The 45 makes it slide along the bend and will pop out the opening.
I work at stones speed shop in Chilliwack bc. These two tricks in addition to what you are already doing will help things get done that much quicker ad easier.

Ha! First thing I notice on a great engine is the wires. One of my first cars was a 70 Deville boat and I ruined about 4 sets of wires getting them ‘right’. Thanks fa sharing!

Excellent stuff Faye, done this a few times over the years- and use last week when the new leads for my MGB GT turned it to be way too long. A small point which may help if shortening an existing lead - don’t take the boot off, lube t and move it back along the lead before removing the metal part. Saves the hassle of getting the lead back through the right angle boot.

Hello! Several of your videos on your channel have been very useful to me. Thank you very much for that.
I wanted to see if you could help me with something, I have a 2002 4runner, and I have two problems (I don't know if they are related)
    1) The dashboard sometimes goes crazy, it stays frozen, the needles stay still halfway (with the truck on and rolling) and the km / mile counter display goes blank. If I turn off the truck, disconnect the battery for a few seconds and reconnect it, it goes back to normal... do you have any idea what it could be or what I could check?
    2) the other is a problem with the rpm, when I start the truck they are fine, but after a while on, they drop a lot, to 500 or even a little less. I just replaced the spark plugs, and I measured the spark plug wire and according to what I read, they seem to be fine (each wire measures approximately 17kohm). I understand that some suspects could be: air filter, injector cleaning, or gasoline filter...but since the rpm seems fine when turning on, I don't know if it could be some electrical problem rather(?)...or maybe I am very wrong 😂.
Thank you very much for any advice you can give me, and sorry for the abuse of the mechanical consultation.
