I just had 13 coffee meetings in March compared to 1 in February. I started reaching out to actors and AC's that are within my reach, and ask them to introduce me to a DP, and it got the ball rolling. Next Sunday I'm meeting a DP who shot a very successful documentary that is on Netflix! Hope these coffee meetings turn into something soon
Being new to Videography and wanting to delve into Filmmaking... I realize I am with many others and have made every single one of these mistakes. Luc, you're quickly becoming one of my favorite RUclipsrs to watch for advice on filmmaking. I don't usually sign up for things like newsletters and if I do Ill use a secondary or tertiary email so the emails to come don't bog down my inbox... but I think with you I'll be signing up with my primary so that I don't miss things to come. Keep it up man, you're more inspiring than you may think.
@@LucForsyth nice! I’m really enjoying the way the boys put it all together. Great course and really learning a lot. The goal is more footage and less photos. Started doing Social Media Marketing for some local businesses and they tend to like the photo budget more than the video budgets. Challenging for sure but I appreciate the AOD team and dudes like yourself keeping the dream alive as we break through the difficult part of finding our filming identity.
I have written and trained most of what you covered to sales people and artists, this is the first time I’ve ever taken it. Perspective changes it. Thank you.
Perfectionism really is my biggest enemy. Really had to learn to let a lot of stuff go with the last short film I did. Definitely a learning experience :D
Hi Luc! Outstanding video. I didn’t realize that the same Steven Pressfield who wrote The War of Art also wrote Gates of Fire. That was a very influential book in military circles 10-15 years ago. And yes, I made the same mistake in a video recently while mentioning a book title 🙃 Great job!
Too true! I had 100s of unfinished songs on my pc that "I'll record them one day" and then one day my hard drive broke and I lost everything. And thinking back, I wish I rather published 10 finished albums than sitting now with 0 albums. And funny enough I was thinking about re-writing and starting recording today and then that little voice convinced me otherwise.
beautiful video Luc! Thank you for sharing! I have been guilty of every bad habit you've listed, and I appreciate your perspective of fighting these habits as well! Thanks for the encouragement!
Thank you for the Input! Perfectionism led to taking me over half a year to finish my showreel instead of the one month I’ve actually planned for that. Up to this point, it’s not up to date anymore because of the projects I did in the meantime, so I know perfectly what you are talking about 😂
You caught me on that… at least in most points but most of all it is my lack of being able to network. I can literally stand in room full of filmmakers, producers and production managers, I can even talk to them but at the end of the day it is very likely that no one would know that I am a filmmaker myself (not fiction, really happened 😂). The idea of approaching someone just to tell him what I can do feels so weird to me. It always has been. It’s what kept me away from so many things, not only from filmmaking. I am a creative mind, just like I quote on all my channels. I can make films from start to finish, I am a musician, I can write creatively, I am a communications coach… all that stuff. And people and clients are always satisfied by my work. But going out, telling people all that… whole different story 😂 So thanks for catching me on that! 😂
Thank you for this video! This problem permeates literally every aspect of my life; ESPECIALLY my art. It can be crippling. It will be helpful just knowing that successful people struggle with it also.
Great stuff Luc. Definitely need to read that book you goofed the title on. I honestly liked the new title. It seemed to flow nicer. Going to have to pivot on my Doc as some as some folks are refusing interviews. Thanks again. Cheers GB
Yo Luc this was really helpful. Stumbled on this video and last tip spoke to me. Perfectionism kept me from releasing content and I would buy new equipment to make it feel like I was making progress lol bruh.
@@LucForsythdo you have any content about how to cover noisy, darkroom low light footage? I need ideas because one part of my work is completely useless 😅
For me the anxiety around networking is most that it will be a waste of time because I feel so far away-I have to work for money, I also don’t have the time to shout into the void for free
My thing was cutting a lot out. It boiled down to fear and insecurity but still wanting to do my thing and the result was cutting corners and being lazy. To combat that i started planning my shoots, accepting and embracing my voice as a writer and director, and getting over my fear of rejection. People say no, but it’s not the of the road, just the end of that conversation with that person.
Hi Luc, what rain cover do you recommend for the FX9? There are so many different sizes it’s hard to compare. I generally use a Sony 24-70 or Canon 17-120. Thanks!
The networking thing is wonky for me. I network a lot, and thought people seem to like me when I'm in front of them chatting, they quickly forget me (and don't call for my services or to colab) so I just keep going solo.
Yeah, you have to follow up. I usually wait a month, then check back in. People just forget. Make a spreadsheet after you meet with someone, then reach out a month later, and again 3 months later. Situations change and they might need someone and not remember you were an option!
You've got killer eyebrows.. imho. Good info! My fears center around fearing wasting time, money, and being a burden on my family to pursue a non money making passion project.
7:23- Even the worst story in the world is infinitely better than the best story in my head because the worst story in the world at least exists in the real world.
Starting was probably one of the scariest things I did when it came to developing my first documentary. But now I’m glad I did and am in the process of updating my short documentary and submitting it to festivals.
so true...all of it. I keep reminding myself that this life is short and the only thing that matters in the end is, do we know Jesus and did we/I use the gifts and talents He gave me to share the gospel with others. I am currently trying to figure out the best way to do that, in a not so "boring way" , Thanks for your videos, love your stuff!
This is perfect for anyone starting out their career, but rings just as, if not more, true to someone like me who is 12 years in and still struggles with these things. Thanks for putting out contend that is Relevant to career and life, not just gear and hype. 🫡

Yes man! That’s great to hear Thomas, keep it up!
I resonate with ya!! Get those meetings going
That community aspect rings very true. Working in isolation, then putting yourself out there to people you don't know is a very daunting.
It’s the worst. But so necessary.

Thanks David, appreciate that. I’ll do my best not to disappoint!
Hahah! Love the AOD title plug on the book title at the end! My brain nearly stalled. 😂
Haha, yeah, AoD on the brain!

yep, me too!

You're very welcome!

Yeah, it’s really hard to get over. If you find the secret, let me know!

The same mistake?? I’m not alone! Such a good book, and a great writer, heard good things about his fiction

Yes, totally relate to this. But it’s probably something we have to learn the hard way…
beautiful video Luc! Thank you for sharing!

You’re welcome Patrick, I can only make this video because I’ve done them all, so we’re all in the same boat!
Informative video Thanks Luc.
Thanks!

Total agree. Thanks for this video. From now on, no more unfinished projects for me.
Yes! 👊🏻

Amazing tips! Showing results is the biggest obstacle to me, but I'll get through it when I start showing more.
Exactly!
Perfectionism definitely is a big habit to break. This is GREAT info!
This was incredibly helpful. Glad to see I’m not the only one!
Thank you for this video! This problem permeates literally every aspect of my life; ESPECIALLY my art. It can be crippling. It will be helpful just knowing that successful people struggle with it also.
Great stuff, have experienced a lot of this myself and totally agree across the board.
Great tips. Definitely helps to hear these things said out loud. I'm guilty of all of these lol.
Same. Made this video as much for myself as anyone else!
Luc. Your content is very very good. Thanks.
wow, super valuable, thanks for that! excited for more content ❤
More to come!
I love your recent talking head setup!
Me too…sadly it’s just a loaner house that I can’t afford, so we’ll be getting back to a more realistic studio soon.😔
Thank you very much Luc!🎉
You're welcome 😊
Nailed it. Very encouraging -- so, I'm not the only one? Thanks for the uplifting content, Luc!
15 years in and same problems!
'a lot fewer used gimbals on facebook marketplace' 🤣🤣
Great stuff Luc. Definitely need to read that book you goofed the title on. I honestly liked the new title. It seemed to flow nicer.
Going to have to pivot on my Doc as some as some folks are refusing interviews.
Thanks again.

It’s well worth a read, title or no! Good luck!

What keyboard do you have
Hello! Really cool inputs, thank you! What Font do you use for the chapter?
Thank you for this Luc. I have maxed out already all the topics :) but I am finishing now my first bigger project, thanks
Fantastic!

Killing it!

Damn dude, I felt your words very deep within! Great video! Thanks.
Thanks Lars!
This is exactly what I needed to hear, exactly when I needed to hear it…… thank you 🙏
No problem, happy it helped!

Yes! This is the approach, 💯
Stuff I’ve heard before, but your video was well organized. And maybe that just leaves a better impression on the brain. 😂 thank you
Great Video, Luc! as always. Your channel has had really great info and has inspired me to get going on my own channel!
Fantastic! That’s what I like to hear!
thanks Luc

Ahaha, loved the ”The Art of Documentary” Freudian slip.
Haha, I know, it’s bad
Super useful and relatable!
Nice, that’s what I like to hear!

I have one from portabrace that’s decent, but honestly they’re all annoying!
I suck at filming and these videos help me realize I do suck
Nice to hear, you got a new subscriber
Awesome, welcome!

I didn’t know AOD had a book hahaha
Haha, yeah they hired a really good ghostwriter!
Guilty as charged of all 5!!!
Same!
You've got killer eyebrows.. imho. Good info! My fears center around fearing wasting time, money, and being a burden on my family to pursue a non money making passion project.
Hahaha, thank you sir, they’re all natural!
This is gospel, dude, well done

The art of documentary by stephen pressfield
A real Classic….
The struggle is real...
Unfortunately so
I have many unused gear …
What’s this keyboard? 🔥
I think it’s made by keychron
Ugh, guilty of all of it.
Me too!
What's... reading?

Guilty….haha
Aren’t we all…
The first bad habit...not proofreading your title. LOL
Hmmm…the title of this video?
"Habbit"

I don’t think it ever stops…I’m almost 15 years in and same story!
