    I will add on the point of the emergency fund is that its also useful to have a separate opportunity fund. its there in an emergency but its primary purpose is to enable you to get that one specific piece of kit or that flight or whatever to allow you to take advantage of a new job/client/opportunity

    Hi Luc, like your sharing experiences and kinda demystifying the process for many less experienced.
    As to the comparing part... I found that what worked for me was not comparing, but borrowing some ideas. Look at it as, and this is what I tell in my circles, we have this unique opportunity of sitting in this largest library ever created on this planet, and it is also a video library. We can see what others have done, and consider if we could use any of their ideas to improve our own ideas of storytelling. I rarely find anything I would like to copy exactly. but often I find something that I could use in a particular situation, in a particular scene. It also helps me to have another look, a different angle on my own visions. Looking from this perspective is not to take away your own creativity, but rather allow yourself to take step back and take a look at larger picture. I found it useful and saving a lot of time in clarifying what I want to show, and how to tell this particular part of the story I am at at the moment. So watching others - yes, but not really comparing, rather finding if I like their ideas, and how I would change them to say my own story. I think it is healthier to our minds than going on a dark side of the force LOL. This way we are not looking at the web as a ground for competition, but rather as an exchange platform, a positive field on which we learn and share. I think you agree with this point of view... Thumbs up for your channel!

    The last lesson is THE most important. Financial stability doesnt sound as cool as camera gear. But it is the difference between those who can stay in the industry for decades and those who enter the industry and bail out and go to a typical job after 4 years when the coolness wears off or times get tough.
    Financial stability doesn't always have to be a big savings account either, I get a lot of my financial stability as an 'on staff' cinematographer for a large organisation. All the good staff benefits and regular pay with the agreement that I can take time off whenever to peruse interesting freelance projects and come back the week after back to the staff role.

    Man I’m just starting out as a videographer and it’s hard not having client work to show people. I’m originally a graphic designer with years of experience there. It’s creative, but not the same. I’m even in a great area for video work (LA), so it must be the way I present myself to potential clients. Any help on this?

    • @LucForsyth
      @LucForsyth  Год назад +1

      Spec projects are the way through that. You have to go out and shoot the work you want so you can prove you can do it. Not easy by any means, but this is the way.
