I feel like this would be better for a "dark mode" or a "nightime theme". The original game is too bright and colourful for this rendition. Reminds me of a dark smoke filled casino. Very very good theme nevertheless.
I mean, in Endless Mode the background does turn grey, might not be dark enough but I'd like to imagine the game's original theme fading into this one as you enter endless

Damn, this was a wonderful bit of prose you wrote here! Makes me happy to see that this OST replacement, itself inspired by the original, also inspired a small work of art on its own.
Gotta poke Localthunk about this... This is so good that it could be an official music toggle option. Nice to have something more mellow to switch off to every now and then!
Update: the bare basics of the mod is created! however, I got a bit more inspired to make a sort of dark mode aesthetic to accompany the audio. I'll just retexture cards and change the background colors, and maybe a few other UI color changes. I've published my code to a private github repository, so if I don't do another update in a while, poke me and I'll just release the code as-is.
I used to think the same way, but playing the cryptic mod definitely opened my eyes up a bit to different music since that one also has a few nice remixes but I think this one beats em all personally
Well done keeping traces of the original leitmotiv, as other comments said it sounds like the version that could play after ante 8 where the background becomes more dark and the objective becomes scoring impossibly high hands instead of scraping through the bosses
I actually played a lot with this installed now, it fits well even with the normal vibes of the game. The boss theme is a bit weird, the held note is a bit too overpowering maybe a mixing problem, no hate just some constructive criticism
I actually really like the idea for music mods for this game. The original is good, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't get grading after a while. I also really dig the moody vibe. I always kind of envisioned the game as a "poker machine from an ethereal plane" and this certainly fits that concept.
@theInfiniteEgg-z8i Valhalla is basically a posthumous retirement home that hosts daily combat tournaments, much like the infinite looping trials of a roguelike game such as Balatro. The abstract vortex swirling in the background, and the strange psychedelic music, lend to an ethereal, alien aesthetic, further fitting the idea of some form of afterlife or other world.
Stuff like this would go hard in future updates, this fits the balatro gamefeel like a glove. I would love the option to set different themes to play depending on decks and stakes, to give the harder/easier decks and stakes a different feel, for example.
I saw the title and clicked, waiting to be disappointed and angered by a disguating appropriation and deformed mockery of one of the BEST games to exist, how dare this person try to improve an almost perfect game and add an abomination of its pantheon of perfectly executed mechanics, music and gameelements. The music started playing, my emotions and mind quieted. We have a new God to add to the Balatro pantheon. I bow in sincere gratitude and reverence. Thank you.
I'm not gonna lie, when I saw the title, I was ready to embrace my pitchfork (I just love the original goated theme) but holy moly what a incredible work that you have done so, no war and no battle, just Balatro
Everyone else has left the Balatro casino. Except for you, the dealer, and the bartender. It's 3am. All the chairs are up on all the tables, they've moved your game into the backroom. The one where you can smoke at the table. You're smoking a fat a blunt, got a glass of red wine at your left, and the most busted deck you've built in weeks on your right. The three of you aren't going home until you either you lose to a Boss Blind or the morning comes. And if you lose, you are just gonna start another round. And, let's face it, when the morning comes, you'll still be here. They got you hooked. You're their best customer. You just keep coming back for more. That is to say, that is precisely the vibe this soundtrack evokes. Incredible work, instant install. Musician to musician, the timbral movement under the filter in the bass on the shop and boss blind tracks is just so velvety. The shimmer and the lush reverb on the planet pack is so evocative of the night sky. The vibrato, chorus, and complex filter movement and tiniest bit of slew from note to note on the lead in the main theme is so intriguing. And the delay in booster pack, it's all so perfect.
Metal shutters appear and descend over your windows. Your ankles are clasped by chains reaching from the floor. A pale arm wrapped in grotesque motley reaches from your monitor and starts smacking your table around looking for your wallet, keys, and other valuables as cards start to burn themselves into your retinas. Jimbo crawls out of your computer tower and listens to this while he's out joyriding in your car and smoking your weed out of a comically long cigarette holder.
This mod has eaten into my brain like a cool smoky jazz lounge on a Saturday at 1 in the morning. I imagine small huddled booths upholstered with worn red leather and brass tacks, green glass or hurricane lamps over the table, and a tobacco fog clinging to the ceiling. It's so chill.

@yasminhendricksa4664 if you replace all the soundfiles, then then the song will modulate and change based on what you're doing in game just like the original soundtrack does. In case you didn't know the way that Balatros music works, there's 5 versions of the song playing at the same time, and when you go into different actions like the shop, the main playing window or opening packs, it triggers a different version of the song to be played. And it seamlessly fades in and out of these different versions.
Playing the cryptic mod actually opened my mind up a bit to replacing the quintessential theme, since that mod also has some nice remixes, but personally i think this one beats them all! Gonna have to throw this on my install next chance I get! Good stuff man!
I've been using this ever since I heard it and GOD DAMN. My personal favorite instruments to listen to are the kicks, hi-hats, snare, and everything else surrounding this. The kicks ESPECIALLY OMGGGGGGGGGGGG It has such a nice BOOM which contrasts with everything else amazingly. Sounding much slower and darker compared to the original theme adds to the innate feeling of something being up with Balatro in it's artstyle, feeling almost extraterrestrial and surreal while also just fitting perfectly with everything around it. AMAZING JOB!!!! :3

I absolutely love this, I don't hate the default OST by any means, but I 100% got tired of it because it kinda falls under "not my thing." This on the other hand is perfect for me because at the times I normally play Balatro the normal sound track is a bit too "energetic" if that makes sense. Instant download for me

Totally excellent. I was hooked in the first two seconds. You went far above just a 'remix' with this track; you captured the essence of the game, but not the flashing colors or the crazy combos; the feeling of playing a mysterious game of fantastical poker against an odd, silly, jester-like entity. Perhaps for fun, or for money... or maybe something more sinister? You have perfected the "dark side of Balatro" vibe, and if that doesn't exist, you've created it here. With nearly 700 hours in Balatro, as much as I enjoy the original music, it grows repetitive; doubtless I'm not alone when I say that going forward, this is what I'm going to be skipping blinds and popping wheel of fortunes to. Again, extremely high-quality stuff here. Anyone can open FL Studio or whatever and pop out some shitty trap, but it takes someone with real talent to be able to 'capture a vibe' and do it properly. Bravo, and hats off. Love the track, I really do.

I picture a kind of Uno Flip themed deck, with wood/concrete textures as the background. Very 'back-alley illegal poker' coded OST.

With nearly 700 hours in Balatro, as much as I enjoy the original music, it grows repetitive; doubtless I'm not alone when I say that going forward, this is what I'm going to be skipping blinds and popping wheel of fortunes to.
Again, extremely high-quality stuff here. Anyone can open FL Studio or whatever and pop out some shitty trap, but it takes someone with real talent to be able to 'capture a vibe' and do it properly. Bravo, and hats off. Love the track, I really do.
