- Habib rages against Fowler's stance on Goody's assault, but things take a turn for the better.

Welcome to The Thin Blue Line official youtube channel. In this classic police sitcom, Rowan Atkinson plays Inspector Fowler, head of the Uniformed Branch of the fictional Gasforth police station. Fowler is constantly in battle of wits with DI Grim and the Criminal Investigation Department. Created by Ben Elton, the series aired from 1995 to 1996.
This show is criminally (no pun intended) under appreciated.
British sitcoms in 90s don't last very long.
Intend your puns, you coward!
The opening exchange between Fowler and Habib is so well written and acted.
Fowler is the kind of copper we want. He believes in the law but he also believes in justice, and when those two don't coincide he tries to find a way to make them.
Oh the irony Inspector Fowler says ”the police cannot choose when and when not to enforce the law” and then he goes ahead and does just that! Brilliant writing!
If you follow closely, the reason he must charge Goody is because the mother is pressing charges (that's not actually a thing in British law, the decision is made by the CPS), but the upshot is that he can't merely reprimand Goody.
The law allows for warnings and cautions if the breach of the law is minor.
@@LudvigIndestrucable I believe that TBL is set mid 90s so prior to that the Police could choose whether or not to prosecute.
Personally, I'd have pulled the same trick as I feel Kevin's a good Copper who'd be a greater Copper with the right mentoring and it'd be shame to lose that

Fowler happens to be right. If more police commanders adhered to his mindset, we wouldn’t be having the problems we’re having today
I like that they show him as a decent bloke who is just trying to keep a department running. No wonder Patricia stays with him despite his absentmindedness.
Damn right. Not even the police is above the law and no one should be abusing it.
you mean politicians not backing the blue and taking the side of thugs?
So using blackmail as a tool to get an officer off.
@@JamesDavis-mb1jw no, using fair play.
I just love the point, after a moment of baffled confusion where Fowler realizes how he can get Goodie out of the charges more or less home-free
Fowler has some serious Vimes energy and I love it.
Goody is Nobby, Habib is Angua and Gladstone is Colon.
"I want to press charges" "What happened?" "I'm not telling you anything"
I. find this series gets better with every rewatch.
Could do with less canned laughter, but that was a product of the time

I can never understand the appeal of Mr Bean when comparing it to this and Blackadder. As talented as Rowan Atkinson is at physical comedy, nothing beats his unique sardonic delivery of comic dialogue! 🤣🤣
Finally someone mentioned Blackadder!🙌
The appeal of Mr. Bean is the physical humor he does is universal. With extremely minimal dialogue Atkinson by doing more visual gags with the Bean character, anyone in the world, no matter what language they speak, can actually understand.

Admirable sentiment, and Fowler is a model citizen. Though he should've taken action against the mother at the end.

I wish more people were like Fowler
Fowler was doing the right thing. Words are not violence and hurt feelings do not equate to physical injury. Everything he said about the publics trust in them was spot on. If they cannot be thick skinned and unbaised towards even the most bottom feeding scum then they have no right being officers at all.
That seems to be why the "Progressive" idea of abolishing the police is circling around. Then a new enforcement agency can be installed who *will* take action against "incorrect speech".
Police have a lot of government power behind them, that comes with a certain degree of responsibility that apparently many people don't get. It's alarming how many people have lower standards for police officers than they do for anyone else.
I've seen terrifying arguments that boil down to "police officers shouldn't be held accountable for assaulting people because if that was the case then criminals would get every police officer removed from duty."
Had actions been taken against these hate speech that has historically been proven time and again to incite violence and push certain supremacist ideology many a bloodshed could have been stopped even before they took place. But of course we must pretend in this world, words and rhetorics have no influence on the action of people. I mean it doesn't hurt anyone until it starts hurting everyone.
@@onyxtay7246 They shouldn't be held accountable depending on the situation. They should be heard out first and collect evidence first before any judgment can be made.
Nah beat racists. Introduce their kneecaps to a tire iron.
”the police cannot choose when and when not to enforce the law” - pretty much defines the UK police in real life, they can enforce whatever laws they wish and to hell with the consequence, hence why trust can never be obtained to a full extent
Well to prosecute someone it's the CPS choice not the polices.

@@3irikur you see it all the time online or on tv, people attacking others in cars or setting fires or rampaging down the streets..and yet you do not hear of arrests because cops are now so browbeaten they dare not enforce the laws being broken for fear of being accused of being racist or brutal
@@johnbanks4761 I'm not too certain what you're trying to say with that. Would there be enough resources available, they should of course all be tried for their crimes.
As should the UK, considering they purposefully ignored grooming gangs for decades.
"If I could see a way out of this, believe me, I'd take it... but I can't." - that line sums up Inspector Fowler's character in my opinion - a stickler for rules and discipline (and a little bit old-fashioned in some ways, I sometimes wonder if the character was originally meant to be older), but ultimately a good cop who does his best.

Sometimes excessive force is required... To enforce the law...
It is very funny to see rowan looking at his head !!!!! Notice the face expressions

20 years later and Fowler is right. If police in reality enforced the law to their own officers then the public would trust them.
Raymond Holt said a similar thing in Brooklyn 99, that if officers don't get charged it creates a distrust in the community and citizens end up being more worried about cops than real criminals and gangs
What episode is this
Habib was asking him to bend the law for them.
Fowler used logic to overrule emotion because emotion was guiding Habib to the wrong action and got her to come around to doing what is right, not what feels right. That is an example of a good mentor and leader, and people in general had the intelligence and discipline to overrule emotion like this, the world would be a much better place.
😂
The biggest issue that I have with this episode is the fact that Habib is so quick to toss away all "human rights as a prisoner" just over a few words. She KNOWS that Fowler has to work within the rules, and yet puts her emotional feelings above everyone, and everything, else. And as much as I like the character, if THAT is the type of officer we have in law enforcement, then THAT is the type of officer we should get away with.
I get your point but she is still just human who makes mistakes and a young police officer. Fowler uses this as a teaching moment which is brilliant.
@@mg7094 Exactly. Its not easy to want to be judged by your merits as person only to simply be boxed in by the color of
your skin. Worse when its offensive.
There's something to racism that's just, to use an old term that probably has a better modern equivalent, ungentlemanly.
Habib at this point had a lot to learn still and Fowler did a great job.
@@mg7094 This isn't the type of mistake someone can claim, "I'm just human like everyone else!" They are trained and warned, multiple times, not to do this exact thing. If you're a police officer and have to be told it's wrong to sucker punch a handcuffed minor because he said a bad word, then you shouldn't be a police officer. It's straight up that simple.
How would you feel if someone got in trouble for standing up for you?

People should not be reprimanded for committing violence against punks, especially when it is incited. I don't care if anyone disagrees with me on this.
Most likely the parent cause said lad to become one in the first place
You not caring if someone disagrees with you is arrogance.
@Sanctus Paulus If I were a punk, it would occur naturally.
Believe it or not, I saw a mother do much the same thing to her son in a parent/teacher meeting which she had called to protest the teacher's (my) unfair treatment of her son by keeping him back ten minutes to discuss his misbehavior.
What happened afterward? I haven't been hit like that really except for a "fight" with a boy in school. But dead-ass, I would be defending myself if a parent came at me like that.
"The police cannot choose when and when not to enforce the law"
Except when it comes to grooming gangs and BLM riots.
If only there were officers like fowler. There would be proper justice and order within the police.
In England, I've never felt there was such a big tension between races. Also, the gangs seem much more calmer than the American counterparts for some reason.

I don't like racists, but cops punching handcuffed minors over words crosses the line.
Mr bean, good job, my chane
In the US, the motto of all police departments is "To Serve And Protect". Law enforcement is their job but not their only job. There is discretion on when and how to enforce minor violations.
However, striking a minor is NOT a minor violation. Doing so should always trigger an investigation. Sadly they tend to go the way of the police, but in recent years that trend is turning.
Should Goody have faced a penalty for hitting a handcuffed minor? Yes. Should Fowler have arrested the mother for beating her son right in front of him? Yes. I apprecticate his earlier viewpoint, but TBH he should have followed through.

Habib mad at him for being a good cop, and we are supposed to be on her side?
She’s mad at him for not supporting his own officer, who defended her from abuse, and seemingly allowing a skinhead brat to get away scot free and letting a decent man suffer an apparently undeserved reprimand. Fowler is a good cop in this scenario as he stands by his duty rather than his personal prejudices. However, that also means he has to basically allow a neonazi to walk away without condemnation. Something that may irk him personally but by all outward appearances it may appear that he, as Habib says; values the letter of the law over justice.

@Sanctus Paulus no their job is to protect the citizens, I don't trust them because they focus on what's written not what's right or what was meant. As for what you said shoplifting is a silly game teenagers play. You can't shoplift anything valuable and the proper punishment for getting caught is to give the stuff back and have your parents told. As for people fighting that is not assault. Assault is one person attacking another if 2 people have got in a fight they both know the risks and they're doing nothing wrong, if they didn't consent they could just leave, it's not like a drunk can run anyway. Honestly I don't know why I'm wasting my time with you, people in the wrong almost inevitably think they're right, even more so when they're shown evidence to the contrary.
