      Tournel Henry In the western musical system you usually divide an octave into 12 half tones. But you can also divide it into 24 (then you have quarter tones) or even more. These are called “microtones”. Jacob even uses two microtonal keys in this masterpiece, D half-sharp major (a quarter tone higher than d-major) and e half-flat major (a quarter tone lower than e major).

    Top donator Steve Vai, who got his break transcribing Frank Zappa, Black Page etc to get his audition.. I find that so damn wholesome and beautiful. Congratulations on being part of modern music history June.

    ... I would love to see any choir/vocal group try to do it. I'm sure it could be done, but just how they'd do it would be fun to see.

    • @WatermelonMoon260

      Jacob Kittipol that would be awesome to see but unfortunately might not be possible because everyone would need to sing perfectly in tune/ use just intonation for most of the song

    Hey June, looking at m. 66 - like you I've been a proponent of using four dotted-eighths in 3/4 rather than using a bunch of ties or a quartuplet in notation for a while despite it being against typical convention/Gould advice.
    What would be your main counterargument when people try to point out that writing it this way is breaking beaming conventions?

    • @ahuddleofpenguins4842
      @ahuddleofpenguins4842 5 лет назад +1

      I’ve never liked it when used in 4/4 but I’m still not decided on in 3/4.

      Blumen! One argument might be that it conveys the idea of a 4 over 3 polyrhythm in a more visually obvious way - you can see at a glance what the underlying rhythmic concept is.

    • @blumenmusic
      @blumenmusic 5 лет назад +6

      @@modalmixture Agreed that at a first glance it is a 'cleaner' look initially! But at the end of the day, it hides the underlying pulse/metrical beats, which is one of the prime directives of beaming - beam to the beat, not to the phrase.
      BUT! The reason I am sometimes I fan of using the series of dotted eighths is if there's another instrument that really sells superimposing the actual beat unit temporarily AS dotted eighths. Like if there were drums in this tune and they played a quick 4 on the floor pattern right when the 4:3 hits, making the actual feel of the dotted eighth being the pulse, then I would probably break the rule and use the dotted eighths. This spot doesn't have a strong enough rhythmic impetus to justify that usage here though, BUT again that's just my hot take and I'm just a rando in the chat so it's all subjective 😂

    Ok, transcribing that piece with the names is impressive, but man. It just hit me how many vocalists can sound this beautiful, and how much time and effort it took them to all get together and make it sound this way!! Now, granted, they didn't all obviously cram themselves into a room and record themselves via a phone or something, in fact they did record the voices layer by layer. But even then, it's still very impressive!! Props to you man!!
