I kept being upset when the camera panned away from dodie because I just wanted to watch her watch Jacob! I've seen performers like that before, where even when they're not actively playing/singing they really elevate the experience by being visibly happy/moved. One violinist in particular (Gil Shaham) just GRINS ear-to-ear when he's not playing and the energy is really infectious, and I felt similarly watching dodie.

Jacob Collier’s brain works in phenomenal ways. This kind of audience engagement is so special. It’s the acknowledgment that there are more musicians in a room together than one initially thought. Music really brings everyone together!!
I listened to all three artists separately and was so happy to see the old-soul Laufey, the whimsical Dodie and the cool cat Collier collaborate. Whoever had the idea to bring them together, thank you!
Great job to the orchestra, conductor and audience too🫶🥹.
The comment from the presenter at the end was the unexpected cherry on top 🍒

The way Jacob controlled the audience like a piano was breath taking. To keep track of what each section was singing and give clear enough directions that they could all follow it was ridiculous, and then for the orchestra to come back in and everything was still on pitch. But I suppose he knew that would have made microtonal adjustments to the audience if necessary or a big choir is a self regulating pitch instrument.

Caught this show on PBS last night. Absolutely astounding!! I have Ben Folds music in my library, but I had no idea he was so into symphony music and also encouraging the younger generation of musicians. These 3 performers were amazing, of course, and watching the NSO perform was so enlightening. But the topper was Jacob's idea of directing the audience to sing. I've never seen such a thing and it's hard to believe, really, that this random audience could perform like they did at his direction. I'm so glad I recorded the TV show and have not deleted it yet. I gotta watch it again!

Jacob does this at all his concerts. It's come to be known as the Audience Choir and it's well worth your time to check out the innumerable RUclips videos of him doing this at concerts all around the world. If you like this, you should check out the Mahogany version of his song Little Blue on RUclips. If you aren't crying by the end of it, there's something wrong with you. (Make sure it's the Mahogany recording and not the album version.)😉

Yeah, Jacob is like a musician’s musician. Except for collaborations, he generally plays every single instrument on his albums. His career began with those fantastic choral arrangements of Stevie Wonder and the Flintstone covers that got him discovered by Quincy Jones. So, I’m guessing he attracts a lot of musicians to his concerts (me being one of them I used to sing in a classical choir).

Ben has a long history of working with orchestral setups, seeing this comment a month later. Check out the Ben Folds Five album "The unauthorized biography of Reinhold Messner", specifically the song "Magic". He also has an album with yMusic, a sextet, and there's a great recorded concert of Ben Folds with the WASO orchestra live in perth. A lot of his later Ben Folds Five and some of his solo work has been a lot more compositional.

Some how every instance of Jacob conducting an audience makes me well up with tears. There's an indescribable beauty of hearing so many human voices all working together in unison while all being strangers yet united in their willingness to sing along and sing together. The simple idea of that the sound of the audience directly rivals the beauty of Jacob, Laufey, Dodie, and the orchestra is breathtaking. For a few wonderful minutes every person in that room was apart of making some of the most beautiful sound possible

    Oh, the summertime is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
    And the wild mountain thyme
    Grows around the blooming heather
    Will you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together
    To pull wild mountain thyme
    All around the blooming heather
    Will you go, lassie, go?
I will build my love a bower
By yon clear and crystal fountain
And on it, I will pile
All the flowers of the mountain
    Will you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together
    To pull wild mountain thyme
    All around the blooming heather
    Will you go, lassie, go?
I will range through the wilds
And the deep glen sae dreamy
    And return wi' their spoils
Tae the bower o' my dearie
    Will you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together
    To pull wild mountain thyme
    All around the blooming heather
    Will you go, lassie, go?

What Laufey, dodie, Jacob Collier and the orchestra achieved doing this song was heavenly to say the least but then what Jacob accomplished, without words, simply with hand motions, encouraging the audience to join in until they became an integral part of this great performance and thus transcending it to the sublime just blows my mind!!! (ps. And for the record, the name of this song is actually "Wild Mountain Thyme")

That is the most spell-binding performance I've ever watched. Just ten minutes of straight shivers, because the vocals of Dodie, Jacob and Laufey were amazing alone, but the addition of the orchestra? Perfect. NAD THEN THE HEAVENLINESS OF THE AUDIENCE? BECOMING LIKE A CHOIR? I'M LITERALLY TEARING UP. I haven't seen something this beautiful n so long and it must have been absolutely indescribable to actually be part of that audience or within that concert hall.
