No he wasn’t. He was baptized at the Lutheran Georgenkirche in Eisenach, and remained loyal to the faith throughout his life, though he was employed by patrons of other denominations, such as Calvinists or Catholics. The reason that the texts here are in German and not Latin was so that the congregation could participate in the singing. Lutheran churches did this; Catholics didn’t, wherein the singing was done in Latin by trained choirs. Some of the canti firmi in the chorales were originally written by Martin Luther himself. Bach did write a Latin (ie catholic) mass on one occasion (the famous b minor mass), though his motivations for doing so are uncertain. Though is was written when Bach was living in Saxony, whose capital, Dresden, had a Catholic court. You can read more about that here- ( www.kennedy-center.org/artist/composition/4360 ).
I am a bit confused that why the first note/chord starts on upbeat so frequently? What interesting is that the notated upbeat doesn't sound like an upbeat... Could anyone explain this please? Many thanks~
I feel the same, i think the explaination is that this chorales were armonizations of well known melodies. Knowing the melody and hearing the lyrics knowing what the words mean helps you to hear the written downbeat easily. I think that happened to listenets at that time.
alot of the ones that start with an anacrusis, the anacrusis is a dominant chord which wants to resolve to the tonic which is on the down beat. usually the first downbeat isnt a V chord in this style so our ears dont expect the first chord to be the downbeat because it resolves to tonic
I don't understand, the first piece is in LabM and there are three sharps which means it is in LaM. Can someone explain? ...I'm confused. I train myself to transcribe it by ear.
That's because the recording is done in a different tuning. A=440Hz is the one we use as the standard nowadays, but before that there were lots of other non- standarized ones, most of them tuned slightly down. This one is probably around 415 and 420Hz, making it sound almost like a semitone down. Some recordings prefer the "tuned down" method for historical accuracy.
The best way to understand the practices of eighteenth-century voice leading is to examine this works by composers of the period and J.S. Bach is one the best composers in this time.
Thank you! I was thinking of uploading the full 15-part Choralgesange, but the thing is that the recordings I'm using are copyrighted, so the owners can delete my video at any time if they want to. So, I don't know what I'll do. In June, when I finish all my exams and stuff, I'll see what I can do and I'll try to post the rest of them if I can.
Hey Anthony, sorry for responding so late, I completely forgot to answer you. You can use my videos to help you make the analyses, no problem at all (if you link to them in some sort of way), but I don't think I have the time nor the enthusiasm right now to do a complete analysis, I'm very sorry. Bach's chorales contain some of the most extraordinary harmonizations he or anyone ever wrote including Wagner.
