if a teenager harasses you just beat him up with your shoe, this way he will learn a valuable lesson and he will stop harassing women, and don't worry I am sure his family will also be angry once they know what he has done, in fact, my aunt one time was being harassed and she followed the boy inside of his families home and beat him up in front of his family and then she went on her way

I travelled all over Jordan and felt very safe, I got the odd comment here and there but it was no bother. I think its important to be kind and respectful to the culture(dress appropriately as you mentioned). Also, I have never seen so many police officers in my life! What i dont understand is that, why are many muslims, living in the west, so angry that they can't wear niqab and burqa, when western people coming to middle east have to follow strict dress codes in order to not be harassed? What is peoples opinions on that? I just find this matter a bit hypocritical..

catcalling is an issue in Jordan, i don't understand it and it happens to all women not only foreigners. some of my friends do it but never have they ever thought of actually doing anything to a girl. my best guess is that it is something that they saw their older brothers doing and the older kids in the neighborhood, and being able to catchall girls might give off the vibe that they are confident.
to put it simply if a guy catcalled a girl then most people are not gonna say anything and the guy/ guys are also half expecting the girl to say something back and that's the extent of the interaction. but if a guy/ guys started following a girl and canceling her then there is a high chance that people who see this will act to defend the girl even without her saying anything and making sure the girl is okay

I love the way you explained it. Local women, arab women in general they are very good putting these barriers and we westerners need to learn that as well. And as for the clothes they are barriers as well. Make sure you don't wear clothes that scream 'I'm an attention seeker and have no self respect' that's how you would be viewed anyways. And yes...if you in Rome...do as Romans do.

I've been watching your videos for a couple of days now and I think its good to talk about jordanian people and culture and i insist you to be honest with everything, just a couple of things i would like to disagree with you.
By watching another video"eid adha" i know your husband is a Muslim, he must have told you what islam teaching us about women and how to treat them. Beside how muslim women should dress and all other things, basically muslim women should wear conservative clothes so that no one could see anything that might cause harassment ore any other bad thing..... That was the basic.. But with time change and everything else its difficult to maintain that idea,, i am verry upset that anyone would harass a lady because of what she is wearing or where she is from.... That's so wrong. I know that there is some guys still doing this but they are the least of the population,,, you have to put that in your mind.
RAINBOW STREET!!! really?? Your husband should've known better,, its a bad place to go to..
I am jordanian, also i am a guy but i dont go the such places,,, its known as a place for the younger who wold be harassed,,, yes its true they feel great about themselves for provoking the young boys emotions,,, i am sorry to say that but that is a fact,, some people are like that.
I hope you got the idea,, also i whish for you to get to know more good and polite people who wold tell you what's right and what's wrong in our culture.
NOT EVERYONE IS THE SAME..... I know you've said it but keep it in yous mind all the time.
Wish you the best and welcome to jordan

      Thats it
I am proud to be jordanian, one of the safest countries.

How are single mothers viewed there? I value families highly as having a
      mom, dad, and children.
Spiritually, I believe a single mother is wide open if she does not have a covering. Meaning a husband.
The American way - is the worst because single mothers are common which is very sad for children.
This act leaves a woman and children wide open and ready for disaster.

One very important point. Those who do that to foreigners, are freaking afraid of the police. Cat-calling and thug behavior are not tolerated on Arab streets, not only will be the police stop them but also the pedestrians(especially old age local women) around will barge in and give those hooligans a tough time. They will help the tourists and foreigners and especially WOMEN (OF ALL ETHNICITIES.)

@Miss O’Genist I have no idea how things are in Egypt. I've heard that about Egypt and Morocco.
You have to know that Egypt is a big country and cities like Cairo are huge. One general rule about any big city anywhere around the world... Women shouldn't go about those cities except the tourist places and no where else. You can find similar incidences In South East Asian, South American and Eastern European big cities. Even Big cities in the West have many similar incidences.
I've lived in Chicago for quite some time and on my first day at work my female colleague told me that she's a single girl living alone in this big city for 10 years and she never goes out alone after 8:00 p.m. because of the news she hears. And I used to get email messages from the University I worked with warning about some incidence/street burglary happening around campus. Of course I'm a middle eastern man, that wouldn't stop me from going to the nearby supermarket at 11:00 p.m. but then again when I thought about it, something could've happened.
As far as Jordan goes, trust me its an EXTREMELY safe place and I'm not telling you that because I'm Jordanian... I'm telling you that because I lived in a bunch of cities around the world and Amman is one of the SAFEST. I'm sure you would say I'm biased towards my city ;p but trust me we have a good grip on street hooligans.

    • @TJTheProud

@Miss O’Genist If you are going around spreading words about what you hear around on the internet and not about personal experience, I am sorry to tell you that you are the one who is spreading the lies. If you haven't set foot on our country then please don't speak about experience posted on random blogs and videos. And we are very much civilized.

    • @TJTheProud

@Miss O’Genist number one perpetrators? Go look up where most of the perpetrations happen.
Arab streets don't tolerate cat-calling nor does it tolerate disrespect towards women.
Now I have a clear idea of what kind of person you are . All what you want is to blame a culture of being disrespectful and abusive, you can go on and spread that little idea anywhere else.
You are very rude and accusatory when you told me to spare you whatever you wrote upwards, you can do yourself a favor and never visit Egypt because of the so called stories you heard. If you choose to reply spare yourself because you have based your assumption on third person stories and I have no time left for you.

The maximum harassment that could happen here would be verbal harassment only! Guys here are actually so afraid to touch a body of a woman that they don't know, cuz it's not ganna end well for them at all, weither from the police, their parents, or even just people walking down the streets, they are ganna intervene and beat the heck out of them.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! As for my experience, I used to get cat called in Amman, and the further I went into the rural areas, the more respectful men have been. However, I'm saying this as an Arab female who wears the hijab, so I'm sure for them to see a non-Arab female would lead them to behave differently. As for putting up boundaries, that's very true! I learned this from a young age: in Jordan, you must present yourself in a certain way to have men understand to NOT approach you and flirt with you. I don't look men in the eye there often, and when I do, I make sure to keep a straight face that basically says, "don't try me." Otherwise, they might mistaken a smile as, "I'm interested in you." This is a big difference compared to western nations. Men and women don't generally date in Jordan, so the way they behave around each other isn't really the same way men and women behave around each other in western nations. In Jordan, my convos with men who aren't related to me are pretty dry and even formal.

I feel sorry that you have been harrassed in Jordan. Me as a jordanian man living in dublin I know that the difference between physical or verbal harassment in Europe vs Jordan, is that harassment in Jordan does not go beyond certain level most likely teenagers do it for fun nothing else but in the west mens do it because they want physical contact with women.so in Jordan harassment is harmless and the police will take it seriously. Try to tell a police man about some one who said any thing bad to you and see What will happen if he was caught. The guy will start crying and begging you for forgiveness because he will go to jail for that. I'm dublin some Muslim women have been attacked and theire hijab been removed by force but that was individual cases.also recently a Muslim teenage boy who was doing his leaving cert was bullied during the month of Ramadan while he was waiting for Adan in a park beside his house. The boy was attacked and stapped by group of teenagers.unfortanately he died. Harassment is every where but in Jordan I think it doesn't go so far .

What I did - remained polite, never accepted dates and told them that I had an Arab boyfriend (not true, but I had an Arab guardian angel that was available for me 24/24). Avoid common transportation or travel with families. Stick with women if possible and don't encourage men to engage. And never let them think you are unsure and/or lonely. Tell them you have plans, you are meeting your friend(s) at a specific time later etc.

Hi, thanks for this video. This is a tough topic to grapple with, and can provoke lots of disagreement, so I really appreciate you taking it on. I generally agree with your advice and comments, but I have a few points of disagreement and would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Before I continue, I'll start by saying that even with the amount of harassment in Jordan, I still feel much, much safer here than in the US.
    1. There is quite a lot of harassment in wealthy and "liberal" neighborhoods. I think it's problematic to say this is mostly an issue among the poor and/or "conservative." I've experienced a lot of harassment in wealthy neighborhoods, and also from men in private and fancy cars. I have also experienced some harassment in poorer areas in East Amman. Overall I think it depends on the neighborhood (like downtown is the worst), the context of one's presence in that place, and unfortunately how one visually presents oneself.
    2. I think you're generally understating the amount of harassment in Amman. (I also have a theory that harassment increases with the temperature... lol.) You mention that you don't get harassment much anymore -- perhaps you are often with your children? I've heard from others in Jordan and Egypt that they experienced less harassment when they started leaving the house with a baby/young child. I also believe that you have a car, which makes a huge difference. Walking and using public transportation means more exposure to street harassment. (I've personally never had issues when actually on a bus, though.) Given how strong car culture is in Amman, I think it's strange for people to see women who look foreign (and probably upper middle class) walking instead of driving.
I've been told by a few Jordanian men and teachers that harassment is not a problem here. Frankly, the types of harassment I've experienced in Jordan in 14 months have, at times, been more dangerous than what I experienced in 9 months in Egypt. Of course, that's my own personal experience, and I'm also not trying to generalize about how Arab women experience harassment in these countries. I do think that there isn't as much public awareness about harassment in Jordan as compared with other countries, so thank you for bringing it up.

Such a great video Rachel. Here in Jordan we have those morals and good manors among all the population. We treat everyone friendly and politely. But as you mentioned, some people in some areas in Jordan don't have that good attitude. They assume that as a foreigner you will be wide open for them. Don't hesitate to call the police or to ask nearby people for help whenever you face harassment or bad action towards you.

BTW can you make a video about your family if they have visited Jordan and what they think about it?
Also you can compare your thoughts about Jordan before being here and after

The harassment is harassment .. if a woman didn’t ask for your opinion about how she looks then just shut up
.. we shouldn’t lie to ourselves/others or try to make it look better, we have to take serious actions against sexual harassment to protect women in Jordan especially the foreign ones

I think if she read my comment she will understand unlike you that am being sarcastic I know harrasment is harrasment and am also against that just trying to be nice, altgough yes we need to take an action but on the other hand she HAVE TO respect the culture as what she wears and everything else that's my opinion in general.

    • @manarabdelkarim9458

Mohamed Badareen there is a huge difference between respecting some people’s culture and getting harassment for “what she wears if it is not suitable in their culture “ then gets all the blame ! .. btw harassment is a filthy crime and not a material for jokes.. did you get it you funny guy?

Did you see me joking with you?
      NO!
And the point was if there was respect for the culture there would be no harrasment or at least less harrasment for sure she doesn't get to blame but it's called prevention we cant control such a thing it's individual act and take it easy you don't have to get angry over a joke especially it wasn't meant for you

    • @manarabdelkarim9458
      @manarabdelkarim9458 4 года назад

Mohamed Badareen we can’t control it? Individual acts? Other countries" developed and civilized countries "have less ratio of harassment because “they can control it” you can take Korea as a good example of women protection and strict laws against harassment.. and of course I will be “angry” because there is nothing more offensive than getting harassment then find someone who tries to ease the crime by joking .. as someone who used to get harassment like ones every two weeks while she wears hijab! your words about the culture and clothing are not so true.

I am Jordanian , I think Jordan is very safe to women and children, as you said most of the time it's some guys or teenagers just playing while in Britain there are some phsyco s that you need to be scared of, plus if someone sees him cat calling or something it will be a bigger problem for him even you don't need police he will put back by the people, and also the crime levels in Jordan are way less than European and American countries where they are banned to walk in the streets after a certain hour in some areas ofcourse

Here's a few links for the people that watch this video and have anything to say about sexual harassment and women treatment in Jordan and Arab countries.
You will find the links at the bottom 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

And about that poor lady up in the video, who's been subjugated to harassment by Jordanian and Arab men so many times, and why she had to come out and speak up?!
First of all, you folks you need to understand where she's coming from. and why is she so surprised how so different to England it is here in Jordan! and especially in Zarqa!
After all she's a posh pommy and such things are just so strange and out of touch with her reality back home folks.
and that explains why she had that urge and need to make this video trying to make Jordan a better tourism destination for everyone around the world.
💥 By the way folks 👆🏼 that was sarcasm 🙃

If you have something nice to say about Jordan you're welcome to reply, otherwise... NO One, has anything to say about Jordan at all, and if you don't like it here just pack your gear and go back to where you came from.

the problem is when women wear clothes revealing parts of their bodies such legs, cleavage, arms and tight pants. It is disrespectful and some men will not show any respect. Women should understand it and prevent to use it. I think arab men are so polite and respectful when you respect the islamic code dress.
