The way a game should play depends heavily on intended player experience. For many games, the intended player experience is to feel good and have fun, so for those, your ideas of preparing the player and giving them some leeway are a great fit. But there are some very famous counter-exaples: horror games (as you mentioned), rage games, soulslikes, pretty much anything where the emotion/feel you're going for isn't just happiness.
