    FINALLY, this dude knows EXACTLY what he is doing. Well done sir. Ive been driving boats since I was 10 years old, and now at 53 have learned things, and you nailed it. Keep the bow up and nose up, hit the waves at 45 degrees ish, on an angle when you see huge assed waves, otherwise, stay straight on if your boat can take it, know your boat and learn your boat in other words. If you have a passenger, get them to the mid or rear of the boat to lift your bow up, or, change your tilt on your motor to lift the bow. Dont bother going too fast, just enough to lift the nose, and stay steady and true and somewhat dry, but expect to get wet, its a free shower lol. Wear life jackets and have a bailer ready in case. I just wired my bilge pump to a switch just in case as well. Again, super smart advice from a super experienced and competent man, Rich Fishing. Thank you for confirming what I thought I knew. Happy and safe fishing buddy from Canada!

      Bass boats are probably the worst hulk design for waves

    • @noahjohns7954
      @noahjohns7954 2 года назад

      @@bradpitt3810 no hull design is bad in waves, some are just better than others and it depends on the operator. Bass boat hulls and flats/ shallow bay boats are the same type of hull essentially other than transoms and on top, and I’ve seen flats boats in very large offshore waves.

    This was some great advice young man, you handled your boat with great skill and demonstrated
    the correct and safest method for getting a small flat bottom boat through that chop.
    By the way, knowing the day's weather forecast before leaving the dock is THE MOST IMPORTANT first
    step in getting BACK TO THE DOCK safely in a small craft. Everyone should watch this this video.

    excellent job operating the boat. I operate a small tin boat in Chesapeake Bay Md. so I am familiar with the wind picking up. You are correct about the more you operate your boat in rough conditions the more confidence you have . My boat is a 14 ft vee bottom so I might get a little less pounding on boat but I do same approach you mentioned, hit waves at 45 degree angle, dont pound boat unnecessarily, keep an eye on the waves ,especially ones with white on top. great video .

    Good video man. Thank you for sharing. I'm running a 16' Lowe flat bottom with a 20hp jet on the upper Potomac and susquehanna rivers. Pretty new boat owner, been fishing from them my whole life, its a whole different story when you are the captain and you are calling the shots and taking things into your own hands.
    Biggest thing is KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT OFF. If the forecast is calling for 10mph or above....boat stays on the trailer.
    That doesnt mean that things aren't going to pick up on you, sometimes stuff sneaks up quick and you gotta ride the rough out, but definitely best to avoid it if at all possible. The reality of taking a nose dive , especially here where the water is 40 degrees...no good.
    Stay safe out there man. Thanks again for the tips!

    • @TheSteelerfool
      @TheSteelerfool 2 года назад

      10mph and ur boat stay in the trailer?!?🤣🤣 I avidly boat the Susquehanna with a 1448 and also have a 20ft pleasure boat I’ve ran the worse winds so far this year in the 1448 mod v and have no issues

    • @ramrodrymensnyder2648
      @ramrodrymensnyder2648 2 года назад

      @@TheSteelerfool yeah....catch a 10 mph wind on the potomac and have the tide turn against the wind and you will learn a hard lesson. To each his own, but anyone who fishes wide water much will agree that 10 mph wind blowing against the current can get squirrelly quick in a small low draft boat. Good luck out there....youll need it eventually.

    A jon boat is basically a large canoe with a small motor on it. It is not meant for open water like this. I’m afraid videos like this will cause people to put themselves in harms way trying to cross open water and drown!
    You also have to consider, he putting a lot of pressure on a small motor. If that motor happens to fail, that jon boat could easily take on water.
    Jon boats are meant for lakes and canals. If it takes on water in a canal, you are only a few feet from the bank. Just beware people!

    Thanks for the video. Just what I needed to see, and learn from. I agree with the other reviewers, you handled it like a pro. I bought a Jon Boat and new 10HP, and it's my first boat. Like you I was anxious to go out despite the wind. So 2 days ago I was in the lake for the first time
    with about 10 knots gusting to 15, I got a little scared that I was in over my head once I started hitting the chop and realizing how long it would take to swim to shore in a worst case scenario. But from watching your video I think I handled it correctly. I slowed down to where was starting to come off plane so the bow came up a bit, and I also steered a course to cut the waves at an angle. I turned around after about 10 minutes. After watching you, I realize the boat could handle it, and the main thing is to not panic and find the optimum speed. It felt similar to the experience of learning to fly a small single engine airplane on instruments the couple times I actually flew into the clouds, or skiing steep narrow chutes where you can't stop, or steep trails on a dirt bike. As long as you don't panic, then you get to live, and it's great the first time you make it and build that confidence.
