Poor man's endmill.

  • My 3/8" endmill is blunt, so I thought I would see if a piece of 3/8" dia HSS, would do the same job and it does! ..
With the end ground to a D bit shape, it cuts sideways nicely, even with no relief behind the cutting edge.
This piece that I'm milling, is to mount a new trigger, onto my self made bolt action. The trigger I made for it 24 years ago, has died and replacing it is something I have wanted to do for a while.

A very good experiment! I cant see why it shouldn't work it works well enough on the lathe, the sharpening is the secret, you have obviously got this spot on. The only problem I see is that there is no thread to lock up in the collet.

Cheers, mate. That's why I opted for an ER style collet chuck. It can hold any smooth cylindrical tool.
One thing I did discover, after taking the job out of the vise, was that this type tool cuts slightly undersize and not oversize, like a helical endmill. That meant that my job came out better than expected.

Tony Small: That was a surprising advantage, you can always take a bit more off, but it is more difficult to deal with an oversize slot, well worth remembering if you want a tight fit .
