  • More fun footage from the annals of The Artificer in which our hero battles with vintage technology. There's also a dead rat.

Andy- Datak makes letter and word sets for electronics. IIRC, Philmore bought the company out but last I looked online, they still existed. Last I bought a full set of electronic words it was like $15.00 USD. Sometimes my local Dollar Tree has some lettering sets in, possibly in cursive. If they do, I will send you a sheet or two. Yes they are a nightmare to align the letters. I would remove the panel and lay it flat, putting a thin sharpie line on the panel and using that to align the individual letters with. Then remove the line and coat the letters with a thin coat of clear nail enamel. For cleaning the moving contacts on rotary switches I got a "pencil stick" type typewriter eraser. The carefully sharpened tip can get in to clean up that moving segment.(both sides of the wafer Do not try to clean the fixed contacts or they will be truly buggered up. A very light spray of Cramolin seems to work fine, but too much can muck -things up.

Not heard of Datak Frank, though in my never ending search for an easy way to label projects I have seen sets with common audio terms on. I've used Letraset on a few amps, it's slow though. If I could be arsed & had the cash I'd use a PC & a decent printer. You can also get professional panels etc made, not cheap. Lastly I have a glass fibre pen which are good for cleaning contacts, access is often a problem though. Thanks as always for your IP.

Another good one! I always wince when I see those multi layer wafer switches with caps and resistors all over them 😬 Did those wax-covered mica caps read OK I'll have to wait and see I suppose...... I have an amp with one of those switches that is locked solid and have put off looking at it for ages

Ta. Aye, those multi wafer are a pain, especially if you can't get access. On my Tek scopes there are some nightmares with up to 10 wafers & the only way to get at em is to completely dismantle the scope. Re caps & other components, I'll test em all at the end. TFW.
